Morning All

I got my swim and my ride in last night...but it meant breaking my no eating after 9pm rule...Hopefully the increased metabolism from working out will counteract the decreased metabolism from eating right before bed!

LazyMarathoner - 2009-03-05 11:27 PM So I ate like an animal today in preparation for that big swim and then didn't swim. But now I'm hungry again because I think all the eating fired up my appetite. I'm going to be a big ball of blubber soon.
It'll help you swim. Think of a whale. Uh, wait. I don't think I helped.... Ummmm... DOLPHINS. Yeah, that's it. Think of a dolphin. (My bag of Pepperidge Farm Double Chocolate Milanos, which I opened earlier today, is now gone. Which tells you what direction I'm going in, too. I'm feeling a tad whalish tonight....)

LOL, my blog title over Christmas was "It's a Good Thing Fat Floats"

Good morning!  I'm 5/5 and will be six for six today!  My heal is bothering me this week.

 :-

Ps.  YOu guys are one talkative group!

Hi Geoff. Do you have plantar fasciitis issues? That usually is the culprit behind heel pain. There are some simple things you can do daily to keep that under control if you catch it early.

Nice work on getting the peaches every day!

Offthegrid - 2009-03-06 8:58 AM I'm goin' swimming tonight, but I'll probably only be doing like 300-500 yards! Ha! I'm trying to do some major stroke rehab, and I'm going to do a billion drills and floating schtuff and I don't want to do "junk" yardage, so I just quit when I can no longer maintain the new form and revert to old habits. Also maybe I'll give my new roomie's "pilates for dummies" DVD a go. She warned me how awfully difficult it is ...

Pilates is awesome. I got two free sessions at my gym as a new member in their studio with all the cool torture-device looking equipment and it was great. Once I'm less broke, I plan to do a session each week sort of as a treat and to replace some of my boring strength training. Let us know how it goes! I bet your core will be hurting tomorrow!

So now that i'm caught up on posts, good morning team. Today will be a strange one. I woke up with hideous throat pain and my throat is actually swelled. I'm waiting to see if being up and having some hot beverages helps. I have a relatively short, but intense trainer ride today (all anaerobic) and really want to make up yesterday's swim. I'm going to wait 30 minutes, confirm I don't have a fever and then do what feels right. As luck would have it, I scheduled a call with my coach today so I can talk to him about this as well.

Holy carp!  A trial mary.  That is awesome!  Best of luck with it!

Thanks, Neal.  Not running it hard, but keeping in check with the HR and nutrition.  It will be a little slow and progressive.  Coach is looking for a negative split in the 2nd half.

Is your coach running it with you? That's pretty cool that you're doing it. Good luck!

Yeah.  He's living vicariously through me because he gets into it.  He's done Kona twice in his life.  His times were just over 10 hours, give about 10 to 17 min.  I'm lucky to get some feedback for free!

Sounds like a great coach!

He started out as an acquaintance.  Then started talking with him more and we became somewhat distant friends.  He is one of the most upbeat, sociable, and EXTREMELY positive guys I know - always fun to talk with.

I am going to have to show this part of the thread to my DH...He always trains sooo poorly for the marathon...and then wonders why he crashes into the wall at 100mph...If he would just train for it intelligently it would be so much better

Keep up the great work!  And if the heel continues to be a bother, then do upperbody work, core work, ride a bike, etc. and let it heal up.  Have you check your shoes lately?

Yes, we like conversations.  Come on and join in when you have the time.

I don't do them either and likely never will. I've gotten really fast with turns at the wall, you can minimize the time wasted but it will always slow you a bit. But I'm a firm believer that flip turns diminish the workout a bit. People push off the wall so hard they end up gliding a fourth of the length, which doesn't help much for endurance training.

I'll add to that - kicking off the wall is a possible candidate of getting cramps for me (working the calves harder).

LazyMarathoner - 2009-03-05 9:00 AM Morning. Ah, sleeping in until 7 was absolute bliss. I could get used to that, but better not. I have a big swim tonight, a little over 3,000. That will be my peach for the day!

What's the setup - yards or meters?

One pool is yards, one is meters. The pool tonight was meters. I think I'll do it in the yards pool tomorrow though. It's closer.

All Americans swim in the yards pool, and everyone else hits the metric pool?

I much prefer the somewhat-local 50 meter pool.  It is salt water.  It also is outdoors so it is closed for half of the year.

I've always wanted to try swimming in a longer pool.  Since I've never bothered to learn flip turns I waste a lot of time at the wall

I don't do flip turns - you don't do those in the open water, do you?  Yeah, it slows you down at the pool, but I don't care myself.  I wear baggy swim trunks, too, which adds a lot of resistance.

Funny thing, my coach noted last night that I was actually keeping up with a couple of the guys in the fast lane until we got to the wall, where their fancy flip turns would instantly gain them at least a body length on me coming off the wall.
