I too got a pair of those "fancy" goggles and they have been better than I hoped.  Like you said, they are bigger and I am sure I look like an alien in the things, but the sighting has been fantastic and they have not fogged up on me once.  I've only swam in them a few times and once in my last triathlon.  I am trying to "save" them for my races and use the cheaper ones in the pool with all the chlorine.

Thanks everyone for the inspires...being out with my bad ankle has been very annoying.

Ah, yes, the alien analogy is spot on!  I nearly scoffed when someone suggested I buy them but then I tried out tinted ones on a SUNNY day and WOW! I never saw so well out on the water!!

So, how's everyone doing? I'll be checking to see who's getting in at least two swims this week!  My local pool is down next week for cleaning, so I better make up for it a little this week!

Hmmm spitting or licking your goggles, that is a new one to me, I'll try it.  I just picture myself licking my goggles before a race or swim, and it makes me laugh.

Maybe I'll try those fancy alien goggles you guys are talking about.  I already stand out as it as at races, so none of this can make me stand out more then I do now. Smile

One more hard workout for me on Saturday, I plan to ride the bike course and run a couple miles after. Then next week my hours go down a bit.

Only two weeks until my HIM, and I am feeling a lot more confident about.

Next weekend I have a practice 5k run scheduled. Since that is by far my weakest event, I wanted to see how I did before I go out for the triathlon I am doing in August. I signed up as a "stroller" (run/walk) just in case, but I've been feeling good lately on my runs, so I think I'm just going to do it all out.

I am getting so excited about my first race! Thanks for all your guys' suggestions and questions and inspires! I've already decided to do an Olympic length tri next year! Woo Hoo!

I forgot I have exciting news....I'm getting a tri bike!  Wednesday I got fitted and they had to change a couple of things.  Just waiting on the bike mechanic to call me when it's ready!  (Need to get as much practice on it before my tri at the end of June.)  So the good ole road bike will be retired.

Happy Friday to all!  Hopefully everyone will be able to get some training in this weekend!

Good luck Jessica!  Just listen to your body as it always knows best!  You don't want to injure yourself this late in the game.

Congratulations!  I am very jealous!  Don't retire the roadie completely; extra bikes are great for trainers

Okay folks, I'm thinking we should do something fun here.... You know how there are titles like "Employee of the Month"...we need to come up with some title for someone within our group that we can nominate each week...whether it be getting the most swim yardage, getting a PR in a tri, or something....

Thoughts??

Good luck to anyone racing this weekend.  Good luck!

As of right now I'm not sure if I'm racing or not.  I bought a new bike frame and ordered a few new parts and the LBS has had my bike since tues.  They're waiting on one more part.  So now I'm wondering if I should race tomorrow even if I do get my bike today. My main concern is that it's supposed to rain, and riding a new bike i have little to no miles on, on a wet twisty mountain road course doesn't sound too appealing to me right now.  The course is supposed to be very challenging and I thought it would be a great warm-up race before my race at the end of July.  Hmm what should i do?

Sounds like fun to me.  Another potential idea, my other group is doing a virtual tri.  We split the group into teams and each member does a 400yrd swim, 10mile bike and 5k and then take the avgs of each team.  We allow few weeks to record each time.  The bike must be on the road and the swim and run is up to you if you want to do it on treadmill/outdoors or pool/ow.

Rode the bike portion of the HIM I am doing in two weeks, and boy was I glad I did.

I think my training rides have been a lot harder then the actual course, and I thought it was going to be the other way around.  I was soooo happy when I reached the turn around point.  I was most happy about my pace, almost 18 mph average.

Of course my legs were a bit tired after the bike, but I know I could do a run/jog/walk to finish the run portion.  It was a HUGE confidence boost two weeks before the raceSmile

Robby, great idea riding the course like that.  That should really help you being mentally prepared considering the great speed you were able to keep up.  I don't think you'll have any problems in your upcoming race!

Oh, and i updated my personal picture to show those goggles we were talking about.

My tri this weekend went pretty well.  I am sore today, but that will happen with 7 days of doing nothing.  My ankle didn't bother me at all (I wrapped it up real tight with athletic tape), but that led to other problems I did not foresee.  It did swell up a little after the race and today, but overall it is not doing too bad.  I am still waiting on the results so I can put up my race page and go into more detail.  Gonna take today off and see if I can start the workouts again tomorrow.

Just don't wear them with a zebra stripe speedo!  They're real handy if you can get past the aesthetics!

I only say that because I'm jealous. =)  They were out of zebra print when I went to buy my own speedo.  I had to settle for the COW print. =p

Thanks for posting the list!  I'll have to look for tomorrow's too.

You can't discuss a zebra print speedo without pictures...

Here's a swimming question for the group.  I have swum several times now with the Master's group, and after the disastrous cramp-fest of two weeks ago, I realize that I can't even attempt to keep up with the slowest of the group or I risk bodily injury.  Typically the workout is 5000ish yards in 1.5 hours.  My strategy yesterday was to do about 1/2 of the distance for each set- so the warmup was 1x400 swim, 1x400 pull, and 1x400 IM drill, so I did 1x200 of each (and skipped the fly).  I stopped when I started feeling pre-crampy (about 1800 yards in), and just swam during some of the kicking drills (coach's recommendation).  Does that sound like the best way to build, or should I just do the whole workout and stop when I get tired?  I want to get faster and stronger so I can do the whole workout eventually, but it's clear that I won't be able to do that terribly quickly.  Any thoughts?

And somebody please just reassure me once again that I will eventually get faster if I keep at it!

Thanks Sara.  My guess for the #1 most violated is drafting!

Sorry Karen I don't have any advice to give you but geez 5000 is a lot!  I mean...the faster people I swim with are generally around 3000 to 3500.

My opinion on this, and not saying it is right, but if you are accustom to swimming that disatance than I do not think you are doing yourself any good. I would say that you should listen your body and swim so that you are pushing the limits without over doing it. I used to get cramps bad on longer swims, but swim training has helped. I just do not see it doing any good.

No kidding, I cannot imagine doing 5000y!  Does your master swim have a coach there?  If so I would talk to him/her and let them know your concerns and fitness level and maybe they can tailor a workout more designed for you.

When I got started swimming, i just worked on my base.  Meaning, each swim I tried to go an extra lap or two.  I started doing 50y swims with rests in between.  The next swim i would do 100y swims with breaks.  Each swim I would add some distance while trying to shorten my breaks.  Eventually I did a 500y without stopping.  I just kept building from there.  I treat it like I do my running workouts...start out building that endurance base then worry about the speed later.

I would whip out some zebra pics but I wouldn't want to scare off the entire group!
