I remember not long ago when road races were $8 or $10 with a shirt and food. Most cities would donate the time of a couple policeman... then they realized they could charge.

Im itching to do a second sprint tri now. After all the swimming/biking training, it will be hard to go one and done for the season.

You should see the fees in Switzerland!  The 10k I ran last Sunday had a 58 CHF entry fee.  That's about $53 at the current exchange.  And now I'm wondering if I should try to get another tri into my schedule before August.  The season is over here in September.

Biking questions:  Was on my bike today, flat, smooth surface.  A group of cyclists were ahead of me when I started and I tried making my pace the same as theirs.  Even though I thought I was spinning at the same pace, they were suddenly so far ahead of me.  What am I doing wrong with my cycling?  How do I get farther, faster?

Ride, ride lots, ride a bunch more, and then keep on riding!! there is no easy answer, just time in the saddle and putting in lots of miles - you will naturally get faster and be able to ride further!

laura, like mike said: its all about long hours in the saddle.  Unlike swimming, you will see improvement in cycling from just logging longer hours.  But, in my opinion, you will see the biggest gains once you can ingrain the process of turning smooth, repititious circles, over and over again.  Cadence!  Cyclists try to describe proper pedaling with many different, esoteric analogies (ankling, pushing-scraping, etc.).  Do a search and find a method that makes sense to you.  For me, I think of dragging my foot at the bottom of the stroke and sliding my foot at the top (front-back instead of up-down).  It is a hard process to grasp, but once you stop pedal mashing and start finesing (sp?) the pedals, you will see exponential gains.

Has anyone here used the H20 audio products?  I just bought an older generation Ipod Shuffle and was thinking about getting one of these water proof cases for the pool.  I'm just so tired of staring at the black line at the bottom of the pool!  It seems the longer the workouts get, the more the boredom sets in....  stroke count 14, 15, 16 and flip turn, repeat, repeat, is this over yet?  Trying to work in different strokes has helped, but the backstroke started to cause some shoulder pain.

I've seen somewhere online where they will waterproof your IPOD Shuffle. Have you seen that?

Found it:

I actually sing to myself, or count. I want one of those counters you stick in your cap so I can work on upping my pace a bit. I find that quite hard.

^^Now thats pretty cool, but $100 + $35 shipping is a little pricey.  I do like that there is no added case.  Funny about the counter.  How many times have you guys lost count in the middle of your sets?  I just attribute my mental lapses to hypoxia!

Tim, I don't use them but all of the swimmers that do on my masters team recommend finis swimp3 because of the clarity and weight, they clip on to your goggle strap. I think 149 is the going rate, get 20% off,use code USMSNATIONALS in the coupon code box at checkout at Finis website.

I like that on-line store. Trying to get them to ship internationally. What's the group opinion on swim training with pull bouys and kickboards? I've read a lot of different things and some experts recommend that you train the same way you will swim on race day - without any assistance. I didn't think I would like the pull bouy, but it helped me focus on tightening my core so that I wouldn't roll around. Is it effective as a training tool if you're also practicing the side kicking method from www.triswimcoach.com?

Laura, for me, I very rarely use the pull buoy anymore.  I found it beneficial at first since it allowed me to relax in the water a little more, focus on rotating my hips without sinking, and getting cleaner breath strokes.  However, after time, I found that I would have trouble swimming the same distances without the buoy.  I very rarely use the buoy anymore unless I'm really trying to work on rotation, extension, and glide.

I don't like the kickboard.  I prefer to do all my kick drills without devices (side kicks, shark fin, back with arms overhead, corkscrew, etc.).  For me, it just feels more natural and more like swimming.

Sorry, I know this doesn't really answer your question.  I'm definately not the best swimmer here.

actually, it does answer my question...as I thought it would.  I have only used these things last week while swimming with a friend who's also a swim coach.  I was surprised by the pull buoy because I was able to swim so much farther than without.  It really helped me relax.  Put I'm afraid I'll get too used to it.  I hated the kickboard.  It was like going nowhere fast.  We did 250 meters behind them and I was exhausted afterwards.

Thanks for the input.  I think I'll just keep working on my drills without technology.

I agree with Tim, at first you may see some benefit, ultimately they will hurt your stroke unless you use them for specific drills and that is all. Some coaches swear by them, some swear at them. I have both types of coaches, however I do use both, and I will explain.  The pull bouy I use to strengthen my pull ,so when I use it I am only focusing on a clean and stong extension, pull, and recovery, I do not use it for anything else, using it for swimming will allow you to strengthen certain muscles while ignoring muscles that are key to good rotation, kick, balance. The same principles apply to using a kickboard,it allows you to isolate certain muscles so that you may strengthen them, I mix it up with streamline kicking.

The first day of summer has come and gone and it's like late winter here today! Brrrrr!  No way I'm getting in a pool today.

Had a great run with some friends this morning.  It was very slow, but I managed to keep my HR in the 70-80% zone for most of the run.  Happy with that.

Good training to all this week.

We had some wonderful thunderstorms yesterday! Lovely black clouds floating our way one after the other!  My dog Rudy assumed they were other dogs barking at him. LOL.  Pretty funny.    I am going to my first "Twilight Swim" at the outdoor pool tonight from 8-9!  Can't wait.  Tapering this week also though as it's the Rock N Roll marathon this coming Saturday!   Ran on part of the course yesterday.

I am tapering for RnR this coming weekend. Lots and lots of stretching, drinking water and I always find swimming works great for me as it's non impact. MY run yesterday was very, very good for me. I walked only 4 minutes of it! I am in surprise of myself. I  never thought I could do it.  I changed my running techinique thanks to my friend Leslie.  Standing tall, elbows back with high foot cadence. It certainly does help!  The 1st half of my run took me 45 minutes and only 40 on the way back.  Verra chuffed. Finally feel I am getting somewhere.

Interesting comments about changing your running style. I can't remember who it is on this board who's trying ChiRunning, but it got me curious and I ordered the book. I just started reading this afternoon and will try it out this weekend. But...I'm happy to report that all of this cross training and added strength training is really helping my running. I am training at a much faster pace and am getting my HR under control during longer runs. I recover almost immediately and don't feel any pain afterwards. Let's see how much improvement I get from Chi Running!

Me too! My Chi Running workshop is the 5th of July for a full day!

I start my workouts for my swim meet on August 15th, looks like I'll be swimming 100 IM, 50 free,
100 breast, 50 breast, 200 Medley Relay. I will be swimming 4x a week with tons of 50's and 75's.

Good luck with your swim meet, Stuart.  It makes me tired just thinking about it.  Some days I don't think I'll ever get strong again as a swimmer.

And good luck Lynne in the R&R. I've always wanted to do that marathon.

Thank you. I am looking foward to the race. Although not all the faffing about I will have to do for not only the expo (Which really isn't an issue) but the fact the race ends 13 miles away from where I live thus resulting in having to bus home.  Joy of joys. They had originally offered charter buses for people living in the South end but for some reason have opted out of that at the last minute without letting us know.  Fabulous!

Question about bike trainers...

As school comes to a close, I am finding it more and more difficult to get out on my bike because it involves an extra 30 mins of transportation time to and from my training site.  I'm thinking about buying a bike trainer, but don't want to spend a lot of money and don't have a lot of space in my house.  I could put it out in the garden and ride there - I just need to be able to be with my children who are too little to stay home alone while I train.

For those of you who use a trainer, what do you recommend?  The more global the brand, the better because Switzerland is a small marketplace and it can be hard to find things here that are readily available in the US.

I use my trainer constantly, its great for getting in workouts as opposed to skipping or missing them due to schedule or weather, best part is your safe from traffic . I can use any one of my spinerval tapes to vary my workouts, however the down side is it can become boring. I have a Cycleops II, easy to set up,easy to use, stays cool, and is quiet! Its probably on the higher end as far as pricing, as a BT bronze member you get 15% off at Trisports. Not sure if that makes up for shipping to Europe?
Also there is Bikesport, they have the "secret trainer deal"! The owner is on BT often and this is a very popular trainer among BT.
