New user 21 Syracuse | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED Dragonflyer - 2010-05-08 1:23 PM Duathlon in the morning--47 degrees, chance of snow showers and possible high wind gust--should be a great time! Oh man....well, hopefully you'll get a nice little push from behind and then it'll quit blowing. We're getting 60mph gusts right now and it's going down into the 30s. Crazy weather! In Syracuse we just wait 5 minutes and the weather changes again!! Josh, I'm sure you remember that. If you would like to swim at the YMCAs let me know as I can get you in as a guest or just to work out for that matter. I don't think you'll want to be biking in this nasty weather. Let me know. Have a great trip here. Shioban |

Extreme Veteran 603 Glasgow, UK | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED While you're all here I was wondering if you can offer some advice. I've just done my 10k and need to work up being able to run a 26k by the end of Sept. How do I best increase my experience with distance running. Lots of programmes seemt to focus on time - so do I up that my 10% or do I increase the distance by 10%. I was planning on running three/four times a week. 1 interval, 1 hill, 1 steady and 1 long run. Each week I'll increase the long run byt time or distance. Does this sound reasonable? Kate |

I have always used the 10% for distance. And as such I have to fulfill the time part of my program. It seems to work for me except for my damn leg cramps! |

Expert 1128 Boston | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED Hi all! I survived plunging air temps and gusting wind speeds. I would have been better off doing the duathlon instead of the triathlon. Swim got cancelled but not before my age group bobbed in the water for 15 minutes - getting zapped of strength and morale. Turns out that 6 people almost drowned and 1 rescue boat flipped in the wind and needed to be rescued and brought to hospital. The arch that the runners ran thru blew down on top of a competitor and there were numerous bike crashes! An exciting day to say the least. Thanks for all the encouragement, Nick! I will post a race report and photos in a day or so...I am still trying to warm up |

Member 21 Westborough | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED Hi Everyone - Thank you for all the well wishes. The race was so much fun - the cold weather was worse while waiting for the start than during the race - I'm sure this was just adrenaline. That wind was crazy!! Can't wait for the next race. I just had my bike fit tonight and got aero bars and biking shoes. I should pick up some time just from these changes. Also, starting tomorrow I work on bilateral breathing in the pool. - Danny |

Veteran 280 Glens Falls | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED Sorry group-I haven't been posting very much-it seems like there is never enough time in the day to get it all done. Ramping up my training and tossing in a few smaller 5ks and running groups. Thanks to all for the inspires, hope you all are enjoying the start of the season like I am--my only wish so far is a new bike. I like mine but when those high-ends blow by me!!! Have also learned some of my limits and where I need improve ( I know Josh, more time in the pool-have been swiming but not nearly enough--wish the lakes would open up soon, the Y pool is just to packed) Have found that by joining running groups it has helped me a great deal, along with riding with a fast pack I feel that 2 out of 3 are getting stronger every day. Must admit the open water swims are starting to play heavy on my mind but will accept the challenge when it arises. After the duath last weekend I attended a small gathering after the race given by the race director--discussed a lot about what to eat before race day, during and directly afterwards. Wondering what do the rest of you do for that added spark of fuel during those times? My drink of choice is G2-Blue ice-have found that by staying with the same drink it's easier on the insides. Toss in some peanut butter sands, and gel mixes-I can stay fueled most of the day. Being in contact with a Tri Coach is a great source of information. |

Master 1619 Hingham, Ma | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED Hey everyone. I am still alive. I didn't end up racing on Sunday, which from the sounds of it, was probably for the best. From what I have heard from Seren, other BTers and the news, it was brutal conditions. Anyway, still in Syracuse for a couple of more hours before heading home tonight. It's hard to get training in up here while helping out my friend. I will be back at it tomorrow. Everyone have a good week. |

Master 1619 Hingham, Ma | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED So before I could even make the IM Challenge Chart (I know, bad Mentor), Alana finished the challenge in 1 week. 4300 yds in the pool, 112 miles on the bike, and 26.2 miles running. That is one hell of a week and you just put everyone else to shame. Congratulations. |

I did learn that at the point I get really tired, if I push through that I have a second wind that lasts longer than the first. I also learned I don't train hard enough regularly. |

Expert 819 In the Shadow of the Big House | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED That's awesome Alana!! I obviously don't get on here enough lately, cause I had kind of forgotten we were doing the challenge. In my defense though, I am in the process of finalizing construction on my new office and moving into a new location so I've been a bit preoccupied. Another week of moving stuff and things should really begin to calm down....I hope. |

Veteran 320 Orange, CT | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED Does anyone have any recommendations on lighting systems for the road bike? I've been doing some research and it seems like there are a bahzillion different lighting systems ranging from $20 to $1000 (and more). Just looking for something to either start early (not that likely) or ride an hour or so past dark. Something rechargable, light (no pun intended) and easy to mount/dismount. I'm willing to spend $100, but i don't want to if it's not necessary. A lot of the lighting things i've read have been targeting at night riding MTB's, which i would love to do. Right now the issue would be the lights would be worth more than my MTB |
