Also enjoyed your post about the little girl in your classroom. That was classic! I can really appreciate it as I am a first grade teacher. The kids always say the cutest things. One day someone brought me a cupcake from another class. One of my students said "Hey, that's not fair....are you going to eat it?" And before I could say anything one of my students replied, "Hey she can do anything she wants...she's an ironman remember?!?!" I've been running in lots of snow and cold but it's a nice change from the heat this summer! Anyone else enjoying the cold and snow??? I'm in the cold and snow also! I prefer the heat but I've grown used to the cold through the past few years of running in it....still looking forward to spring though! |

Probably the last outdoor ride for the next couple months. |

Expert 868 CALEDONIA/MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Got up, dark, cold, and early to hit the pool. Had a good drill workout. Later I ran in 28 degrees with little wind. Good stuff. I don't mind the cold if it's not windy, but yeah...warm is good. Time to lift. Peace, ~Sam I also added a duathlon in the first of May. |

IMO its not imperative to have a marathon under your belt before IM, but it sure helps out mentally. |

Extreme Veteran 877 Pa | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Tri Sam - 2010-12-16 8:23 AM Hit to pool again today. Bilateral breathing is coming along, but it is taking a lot to get used to it. I recognize this is only day 2, but I'm used to get more air. So currently, there is very little effort on my part to go fast, but a great deal of effort on getting this right. I took in more water than I would've liked early in this morning's swim. I'm hoping this will eventually become second nature and I will be able to go faster. I still need to adjust to getting up so early as well. Whew...movin' on. Peace, ~Sam Okay, so this is normal. :-) I've been working on bilateral breathing and breathing every 4 strokes as well. I can only sustain it for a little while before I feel like I'm not getting enough air. I've been working on it a little longer than 2 days and I guess I can see some improvement but I'm looking forward to when it's all second nature as well. Swimming is very frustrating to me. |

Expert 868 CALEDONIA/MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Carrie- I went to the pool again this morning. I don't usually go on consecutive days, but the pool is closed the rest of the week, so I decided to give it a go. Anyway, I warmed up with bilateral breathing and it went fine. It was slow. However, I also went in this morning with the idea that I was going to do a fast-ish session. So after my 100 yd. warm-up I did another 100 yd. finger-tip drill. This was followed by a steady-to-fast-ish 500 yds. During this time, I "cheated" and only breathed out of my right side. The difference this time was that I was more aware of what my left arm (elbow in particular) was doing and I concentrated on hip rotation. It was not correct form every single time by a long shot, but I was more aware of my form. This has been one of the benefits of me learning to bilateral breathe...to fix my form. Now after the 500 yd. set, I went back to working on bilateral breathing, but at a slower rate of speed. What this workout did for me though is allow me to feel a little fast again and to work on developing some good habits. I had my swimming coach video me and comment on my swim stroke yesterday. This will be the main segment of the Road to Ironman Louisville, Episode 3 video journal, which I hope to get out today or tomorrow. If you want to check it out, you can see that I am certainly a work in progress. Keep at it. Peace, ~Sam |

Since practicing different breathing methods I have become more aware of what I think are weaknesses that I wasn't aware of breathing to only one side. When I started working on the bilateral breathing I was making the mistake (I think) of doing too long of sets and ingraining really bad habits. I've recently (past week or so) been focusing on smaller sets, keeping the form from getting crappy. I would be best served by taking a few lessons to pick apart what I've self-taught myself. Swimming frustrates the heck out me. If only you could get exponentially better simply by just doing it. ha ha |

Extreme Veteran 346 Lafayette, IN | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Carrie, I am right there with you. Swimming is very frustrating. It has taken me a long time to get comfortable in the water. I only breath bilaterally and it took a long time to get comfortable with it. Start slow. My swim coach told me to blow bubbles out just before I am ready for a breath so as soon as I turn my head out of the water, I am taking a breath and getting the max amount of air in. She even said it's ok to turn your head a little further up to delay rotating your head back into the water. That isn't great for speed but who am I kidding, I just want to survive the swim. |

The downside to that is when you guys get into the 80's, I'll be training in the 100's. There's always a tradeoff. Nancy |

Reading a lot your planned schedule races makes me feel like the slacker but here pretty soon I'll have it down. So far I am definitely committed to two races: June- 70.3 Eagleman August- IM Louisville All I have to do now is build around it... we'll see what I can come up by the end of the week.. cheers, thomas I'm in the same boat. I'm feeling like a disorganized slacker looking at all of your 2011 schedules already planned. So far (signed up for): March - Hat50K June - Eagleman August - Louisville Tentative: May: Zofingen (some silly hilly event 5mile trail/84bike/15mile trail) July - Possible local sprint Early August - Steelman Olympic September - 12 hour run in Reading November - looking for a 100 miler that speaks to me |

For someone who is running his first marathon in Feb, can you describe what 26.2 felt like for you?? It actually wasn't too bad, since I didn't swim and bike first and it was a stand alone marathon, the pain didn't start until mile 22, and it was all in my thighs, in shorts races the pain is in my calves. |

Thats makes (at least) three of us doing Eagleman and Louisville. My first "race" of the year is the Krispy Kreme Challenge at NC State. Run two miles, eat 12 donuts, run 2 miles back. Its like a triathlon...except you puke more. |

Does your coach think that's a huge problem in regards to your speed? Just wondering. I had someone unofficially look at my stroke before. She wasn't a coach but she was a very experienced and fast swimmer. She said both my kick and elbows looked great - YET, I'm still so very slow. I'm curious where the speed comes from |
