It could be a number of things but some possibilities include:
- your handlebars are either too narrow or too wide, putting pressure on certain nerves and making your hands go numb
- after a long ride, the vibrations from the road cause you hands to constantly jam at the bent wrist.

Basically, I'm assuming it is pressure on nerves. Solutions include: wear padded fingerless gloves if you don't already, change hand and arm position often (in the drops, on the hoods, in aerobars if you've got them etc). Hope that helps.

Agree with Krystyna,

It could be a number of things.

There is an adjustment period for your hands.  They aren't used to the vibrations...but they should adapt fairly quickly.

I do prefer to use gloves for average roads...but on really smooth roads or on the trainer, they are not necessary for me no matter how long I ride.

I do change hand positions quite often.

It is also important that you do not ride with your elbows locked.  There should be a slight bend...and that should help absorb some of the vibrations.

If it still continues to be a problem...then I would likely say your fit is off.

Hey guys. I had planned to go on a run at the gym today. Got dressed, drove over there and then found out the gym has different hours during our wintersession. Looks like no more late workouts for me. So much for that 90% of my workout goals, I'm 1/3 so far this week. I hope I can get up early enough tomorrow (and go to bed early enough) to make my swim workout!

Didn't feel so tired at work today.  I think I might have to move my weekday double workouts to lunch/after work.  I forgot how much I like to sleep in on weekdays because I'm normally up before 5am on weekends for long rides or runs.  I think my body was revolting against getting up at 5am everyday.

Or maybe I just need to transition it slowly...LOL.  Last year I was doing most of my weekday workouts at lunch/after work without much trouble.  Weird though that on weekends...even if I have a late night out...I can easily wake up for a long ride on 2 hours sleep.

Yeah, its the same for me too.  When I would hunt ducks and geese I would have to get up earlier than if I were going to work and I was jumping out of bed.  Work?  Not so much.  I don't even try to consider getting out of bed to workout before work.  It would be way to early to get anything done and still not be a sweaty wreck when I got to the office.  If I ever decide to do an IM I'll have to get all my double workouts in on the weekends.

I'm the opposite, I need to be up and workout before work otherwise I keep using the "well I rode xx at work today that counts..."  add to that I have to pass my house on the way to the gym after work...  My biggest problem is switching from working nights the last 3 years to working days now, I make myself get up around 6 even on my days off just to force myself into getting used to it.

Kind of fell off the wagon the last week with an unexpected family visit/emergency back to the gym today and just waiting on the rear cassette and I'll be on the bike.

With regards to the hands going numb on bike you might also want to consider the handlebar grips that widen out for more of a palm rest that helped wonders for me...

Woke up today feeling pretty good and got my trainer workout in.

I suppose Mondays and Wednesdays I'll have to wake up early to get my bike in since the masters class I swim in is only offered M W nights.  Not so bad though.  I'm usually in bed early Sunday night...and because Tuesday I'm just running after work...I can still get to bed before 10pm.  But M W nights after masters, I usually don't get home till after 8pm...have to eat, shower, dishes, and wind down...I'm normally not in bed till after 11...hence the problem waking up Tuesday and likely tomorrow morning.

Just got confirmation that my employer picked up my entry fee for the 8.1 mile race I'm doing on President's Day.  It's a fairly big race (20k+ run/walkers) and my employer is one of the major sponsors.  So they normally pay for the first 100 employees that register.

Normally, those 100 spots do not fill up, but apparantly it did very quickly this year (out of about 1700 employees locally).  Good thing I turned in my app early.  And I think it's great that more people in the company are willing to participate.

My employer is 20k strong but wouldn't allow employees to benefit from that type of thing.  Their opinion is "if they do it for one, they'll have to do it for all" and that is to expensive so no one gets a free ride.  They have been a sponsor of a half marathon locally and I have never heard of them doing that.

Edit:
Ok sports fans,  I am a Michigan fan and I think they are stupis for firing Rich Rod.  He had the offense that he was looking for but no defense.  Michigan had a high rated offense, an early season Heisman trophy candidate who broke an NCAA record for QB rushing/passing yards in one season and,if they had won another couple of games, would have been in a very strong BCS game.  I think they are stupid for firing him.  They should have gotten rid of the defensive coordinator but the head coach?  NO!!  The depth chart for the UM secondary was 6/8 true freshman............Really??? How good is that defense going to be?

In some ways I hope the next guy that comes in has equally as horrible seasons.  BUT, I would rather see them win.  So if the next guy is successful he'd BETTER thank Rich Rod for the recruits.  Another thing, they better not change the offensive style of play again!  If they do they most certainly will have horrible seasons.

I am not sure why any of this surprises me.  In our "must have it now" society the win NOW is the most important why wouldn't they fire him?  We lack patience today!  Everything takes time.  For instance,  I was running an almost 25 minute flat 5k about 4 years ago and now, including time off for injuries and surgery, I have run a very hilly 5k in 21 minutes.  It took time to make those gains in speed.  Of course I hope to get faster.  So, I have to take more time, more training and some of it hurts.  But I keep going!

The rant is over.

Time to run.

Well, I can see most of you are really into training.  I love to workout and challenge myself, but I don't like to train per se.  If I do not keep to some sort of strict training schedule of biking, swimming and running, are my chances of completing a sprint tri still good?

Agree Dirk.  I have a feeling this is going to be very similar to how Charlie Weiss was able to win at Notre Dame using Tyrone Willingham's players after he got canned.  Notre Dame should have given Willingham one more year to prove himself with his players.  Instead, Charlie Weiss reaped the benefits, got a 10 year extension to his contract, then proved how bad a head coach he really is.

Whoever the next Michigan coach is, is going to inherit a lot of talent on offense, and that defense is only going to get better with experience.  Rich Rodriguez had to recruit a totally different type of team...and that takes more than 3 years to develop.  You figure the guys that he really wanted to recruit are only freshman and sophmores on his team.  You can't win running your system with players that young.

The biggest issue I see is if they bring in a coach that doesn't run the read/option with the quarterback...because it basically takes away the biggest strength of the best player on their team.

I found that if I keep my hands in one position, I unconsciously tense up. I have to keep reminding myself to wiggle my fingers and shift positions. I also try not to lean forward on my hands and require more from my core. I do have good gel gloves thought!

Hope that helps,
Sue

I would say you could complete a sprint with very little tri training as long as you have good fitness and you can swim decent.  I would definitely not skimp on the swim portion.  You need to know you can swim whatever distance for the race.  Swimming from canoe to kayak to shore isn't the right way to approach this segment for safety reasons.

And........X 2 on the tacos but X10 if they are fish tacos......YUM!

Wow this place has been busy, melbel1038 good luck on the 1/2 marathon I am sure you will do great. The main thing is to enjoy the experience! J I love the bike workout you put up for long rides, can't wait to do that one once it warms up. There is still snow on the roads I haven't even been able to run outside yet. I finally picked up some peddles and shoes today, can't wait to take the new bike out for a ride. Couldn't make it to the gym this morning I had a early meeting . So the wife and I went to the gym together and did some weight training.
