Kido - 2011-02-07 3:27 PM what's this goal thing?

Is everyone's idividual?  Or is there some group benchmark?

We all came up with goals for Feb. here they are:

Quick Reminder of our Feb goals!  This is all I could find, so if I didn't list yours, please make sure we know:

JF                  S:2.4      B: 112     R:26.2
NRG               S:2.4      B: 112     R:26.2    4 hrs of hot yoga      8 hours of core
harbec          S:3.2      B: 110     R:30
Goose           S:2.4      B:112      R:26.2
Jessica          S:7.2      B:336      R:78.6  (told ya she was bad azz)
peterssonb   S:3.5      B:170      R:60

JoeP              S:7         B:135      R:35

I had suggested that everyone set a goal of doing an Ironman distance, but some are over achievers!

It's not too late to join in if you want to play!

*Some of us are definitely NOT overachievers, but just have a big early season race.

I found a great article about swim technique and drills.  Looks like an extensive site for all disciplines as well.  I will be adding these to my drills for tomorrows 2500 yards.

Yea, I figured that, for me at least, it's easier to think of things in terms of weeks versus months.  And february is so easy to do that with since it's an even 4 weeks.

Hi all!  Looking for some bike advice.  Currently, I have an oldie but a goodie 1987 Cannondale SR400 road bike with the groundbreaking (at least in 87) Shimano 105 package.  It is in near mint condition, and a very good ride.  The only downfall is it also has the down tube shifters.  I had it tuned up last year, put a pair of aero bars on it and new tires, bar tape, computer...etc.  I would think this bike is more than enough for the tri life I have recently begun, but am not sure if this is a bike I should continue to train/race on.  Should I be looking for a tri-specific bike?  My long term goal is to enjoy the races and get better each time....not serious competition.  I need to get some up to date shifters, sprocket and derailleure componets as well.  Any advice on keeping what I have, or getting a new ride?

Haha!  Welcom to the fun (and frustrating) world of triathlon.

I would agree with your assessment.  The engine is typically the limiting factor, so your bike is perfectly fine for racing training at this moment.  But if you continue in this sport, you are bound to want to upgrade.

As for upgrading the current bike?  I'm a bit leary of trying to upgrade too much.  I worry that your frame is not compatible for the cable routing that modern day shifters need.  You need the cable houseing stops welded onto the frame.  There MAYBE clamp on aftermarket devices to help, but I'm not sure.

Since you have a mint condition road bike, train/race with that, and perhaps look to add a Tri/TT bike in the future, and save the money on any significant upgrades on the existing frame.

As a side note, if you have not done it yet, clipless pedals would be the MANDITORY upgrade to any bike...  IMO.

I am in a very similar position as you.  The bike I have is a GT, maybe a couple years newer, in great shape froma friend that has done tri's for a long time.    I am pretty much resigned to riding it for this season of tri's and seeing how it goes.  I am having trouble getting my aerobars to fit on the old sized bars.  If I find myself hooked I will look to get a new bike for next season.  My bike will definitely be out of place on the rack during IM.  But, I feel if I train properly I will be ok to finish the bike segment and get onto the best part of the tri - the run!!

I definately would not worry about what my bike looked like on the rack compared to some other pricey bikes. There is nothing sweeter than passing one of the high $ bikes with someone on it that is struggling.

I think that every season, there is something new I have wanted. Bike, wetsuit or any number of gadgets that I know would make me faster. But in my 4 years of racing, here is the one piece of advice I'd give ya.

Since this is your first season of racing, complete the season and make sure this is something you want to continue doing before you go and make any big purchases.

Great advice guys!  I really like the Cannondale and for a bike nearly 25 years old, it is standing the test of time.  Heck, it only weighs 22lbs and that seems to be ahead of it's time for a 1987 bike.  I am struggling with the down tube shifters so I may have to figure that out, but other than that, it rides fast and handles great.  I've got 4 sprints this year so I plan on riding it till the wheels fall off for this year.  Thanks for the help!

x2  And when the time comes that you know you want/need to upgrade, you don't necessarily have to jump to some expensive tri bike.  There is a middle ground there.  You can find a lot of good quality road bikes for under $1k.  Training is what will make you fast.  See my signature.

Hey everyone. Sorry I have disappeared. I have an indie film I was hired to do all the post production on due because it got into a film festival so I have been working almost non stop. As soon as I can get on a computer I will log the workouts I have been doing. (yes I actually did some working out). So I should have the indie film complete in the next day or two.

Couldn't take treadmill anymore and went for a 5:45 am hour long run outside (Air 13F/Windchill +2F).  7.5 miles with striders starting at 40 mins. Felt strong, my face and fingers were oh so cold.

Two hours later and the feeling in my fingers are starting to return (and that's with liners and gloves on).  Oh spring, where are you?

Great brick workout this morning.  30 minute bike, then 30 minute run.  Transition time was a bit slow since I had to dress for 8 F / 1 F windchill.  Being warmed up from the bike helped, I did not feel the cold, except for the icicles on my eyelashes.

Looking forward to 40+ temps this weekend!

Holy cow, you guys are beasts!  I know how cold it is here in Ohio and I thought about running outside today as well.  Then I saw the temp at -1 degree with windchill and the treadmill didn't look so bad for tonight.

Wow and I was whining last night when it was near 40 and I ran outside.  Guess I should shut up. lol.  You guys are killing it!  I probably wouldn't leave the house if it were that cold here, let alone workout in it.

I did manage to get up early again and get my bike in.  Super fun one leg drills.   That's 3 of 3 workouts completed to exact specifications. See, I CAN follow instructions.

Oh, I don't remember if I filled you guys in... I'm officially being coached bt FTP Coaching. I thought maybe someone telling me what to do might actually make me get up and do it.
