The challenge. I will have to pass this one... I have no bike, no access to any water here and I am not prepared to run every day. Oh, and travelling again at the end of the month for 3 days... sorry.

Going for another 10k run around the park today.

Sorry on my iPad so it's not working to add all the names but I will be in for a challenge. I will confess I won't work out on Sundays as that is my rest day due to my religion. And to the person that said the Australians need to deduct 10 points we have the issue of heat in WA. The temp during the day in Perth is 35ish degrees C. Not sure if I prefer the snow or the heat. Maybe log the temperature and we can get extra points.

My biggest change is family. Trying not to let the training rule my life and the family life. Work starts again on the 11th and back to routine.

Today, I'll spend all day doing computer based training modules at work. They are due by the 31st and I have eighteen.

So, if you have any questions shoot, I will be here checking the thread every now and then. Weird to spend a whole day indoors, I can already feel the headache...

By the way, I wasn't saying that Guatemalans and Australians need to deduct 10 points because they have favorable weather or some other advantages. I was just trying to rig the rules to knock out Mark and Gabe since they work out like madmen!

Sorry to hear you won't be joining us Mark.

(As for Australia having heat issues, you have the further disadvantage of being constantly distracted by beautiful scantily clad females as meter maids and festival participants, as Mark has diligently documented for us. I think it would be difficult to train in such circumstances.)

Ernesto,

The reason for the slow down early in my run is the steep hill i hit. My village is on the side of the hill so my loop goes up, across the top, down the side and then back along the bottom. I run to music so my cadence is consistent but the hill impacts on my pace.

Can someone please add my name to the challenge? I'm posting from my iphone which doesn't allow me to quote posts.

Ernesto, you asked us noobs to post a question no matter how "stupid", so here it goes:

I am in the market for my first tri-shorts/tops combo. According to feedback, it seems DeSoto makes jerseys long enough to cover my 6'3" frame. I just found a super deal on the desoto forza rivera shorts, but they are black/blue. Not my favorite, but cannot pass on the deal. So looking for a top to match and found black, white, or blue.

So, does a black tri-jersey gets too hot in the FL sun? White too translucent? I need a fashion consultant!

Took advantage of my son is napping to sneak out for a quick bike ride. Worked on keeping my cadence high as suggested by Ernesto and Joe.

Very happy with the results. Rode 7.16 miles. Was able to keep an avg. cadence of 94, with a max. of 113 (that was at the beginning...could not keep that up for long). Was also able to maintain speed while working on an easier gear (increased slightly to 16.3 mph). Now I need to work on maintaining that cadence for longer rides and getting my body used to it.

BTW, any Garmin 305 forerunner owners? Is there a way to see your cadence while riding?

About the fashion emergency thing, white tops are great to keep the core cooler, this is particularly important in climates like yours so go for it. But whatever you do NEVER wear white bottoms, unless you are an exhibitionist. Sweat and white will show it all and you probably don't want the moms covering their kids eyes as you pass by while racing.

About the forerunner 305, only about 90% of us own one (hehe). The cadence sensor is a separate accesory that you can easily mount and pair to your unit. I suggest you and everybody that doesn't have one to get it, it will help your training a lot. Taller individuals with long legs find it harder to get used to a faster cadence because if the long muscles, and find easier to push bigger gears. But if being a tall person you can learn a high turnover, and you add to this the naturally easy gear mashing power that comes with the long limbs you can be an exceptional cyclilst.

The very best triathletes on a bike (Juhansenn, Lieto, Staddler, Potts) have long legs, fast turnover and an incredible power output.

Monica,

It shouldn't be a problem but please make sure that the Ortho agrees, injuries are hard to get rid off...

I have the 310XT. Is there a way to download onto an Ipad? I used to download my data onto my laptop, but since getting an ipad, the computer has been put in storage. I dont want to keep the computer out just for downloads (its really slow and a total POS) but will if I dont have any other options for downloading info.

Ernesto:

I have the cadence sensor up and running. My question is if there is a screen in the Garmin 305 that actually shows cadence while riding the bike. I know there are a couple of screens that can be viewed while exercising, but could not find one with cadence on it. Did I miss it?

Go to Settings - General - Data fields - Biking - select how many data fields you want to see (4 is what I have) - Put the blocks you want to see ( I have time/avg speed/cadence/heart rate). After you are done just go back to the main screen by pressing mode five times.

When you're about to start a bike workout select bike and then scroll one time with the up arrow, it will display the things I told you about.

What I do to keep a high cadence is look at it periodically, if I'm going up a hill every time I fall below 95RPM I shift up until I run out of gears (if I do).

I just got the garmin 310xt for Christmas. I also got the quick mount kit.

Where is a good place to mount it my bike? I looked a little online and saw it mounted on the aero bar, but I feel that it may be harder to view.

Any reccomendations?

The other useful thing you can do with the cadence sensor is set alerts on the garmin. I found it really useful to set a low point for a few turbo trainer sessions to remind me to keep it above 90. Once I'd done it a few times I found i was sticking with it much more easily, but the beeping was really annoying so i was motivated to make it stop ;-)

I have my garmin mounted on the loop at the end of my aero bars. Not so easy if you have the type with two seperate bars though.

Completed my first Hill Training Session today. One thing Scott and I have here are hills. We read several plans for training unsure of how to start. We ran to a steep section of road(1 mile away) and down the opposite side. The spot I marked should have taken my 90 seconds to make it to the top and the plan was to do 6 repeats. My plan was to run at race pace for the 10k which would be 8:30. Figured my lack of fitness was the reason why I was only able to hold a pace for 60 sec. When I uploaded the workout I saw that I was running at a sub 8 min pace most of the hill and that was why I felt like I was beaten up by the time I got to the top. Didn't think to use the lap for each run until Scott came out and I mentioned it to him but at that point I only had 2 more repeats.

Here it the link to show. You can see the pace as well the incline (7%). One thing the garmin doesn't show is the wind the knock you back as you reach the top!

Today was our first hill training run today. We started with 6 hill repeats for this week. My hill was about 0.17-0.19 miles long (according to the garmin) and about 6.8% avg grade. Split times were 68, 71, 71, 70, 74, and 71 seconds. Definitely felt tough after nothing but aerobic running for the last 4 months but it was overall a good workout. Unfortunately I forgot to change my garmin to running, so if you check out the link to my garmin data in my log don't be suprised to see the speed in mph. I hate it when that happens.

Use the Garmin quick mount kit and pair it with a profile design adapter - check out REI for the adapter. I have it between the aero bars as well.

Funny anecdote about the pace sensor function on the Garmin. I set the pace alert prior to my HIM where I "thought" I should be during the run. Well, I got off the bike and the wheels fell off. I had that annoying beep alert go off for basically the entire HM and it drove me nuts as I was cramping up throughout the run. To this day, that beep conjures up some bad memories.

Oh dear. It really is annoying isn't it? I have a policy of only using my Garmin during races to record, rather than to pace myself. I always land up using feel on the day anyway. But I like looking at the data afterwards and using it to inform my future training.
