Day 24 - 12.61 miles with a couple of long 6% grades

Trying to up the distance on the long runs to get myself ready to start a marathon plan.

Also, my first experience with nipple chafing from a cotton shirt... I will remember to apply body glide in the future.

For Muskrat (and anyone else interested, really), this is a typical run with some effort in it. Much of the run is in the 140-150 range, easy for me. The effort is just under 180 and run for 20 min. This is actually a little under my threshold (which is over 180), close to half-marathon pacing. From experience, this hard effort area has area worked well for me in that it's challenging to do, but I can recover well from it.

The intention of posting this is more to show the difference between the hard part and the easy part. It's not so much that I'm running in the 140-150 range, but that I'm ~40 bpm below my threshold for the easy running. This is a very noticeable difference. And that there are distinct sections of the run where I'm deliberately pushing certain effort levels. Not just kind of hoping, and seeing what I get on the day.

Does that correspond to a hill, or is it just an intentional 20 minute fartlek/tempo run?

That's an intentional tempo. A number of smaller ups & downs, but nothing major. That would be some pretty poor pacing if HR went up that much and for that long just because of a hill. And spikes in the first few minutes are HR strap garbage. It was showing ~140 in that time.

Nice job Muskrat!!

Day 3, 3 miles. I am changing the way I run and it is killing me. I hope it pays off. I am trying a quicker cadence, legs feel great lungs and heart don't like it yet

Two more runs in today, 26 days straight. I'm tired of adding all the runs up. I just know it's at least one a day.

Thanks...and good job yourself.

As for changing your stride...do it in bits and pieces.  If you run 3 miles...run 1/2 mile with your new stride, then run the rest "normal".

I'm only guessing, but are you trying to run with more of a mid foot or fore foot strike?  If so - definitely don't change up too much too fast.  A midfoot strike will use more of your Achilles tendon and your calf muscles will flex way more.  If you change too quickly, you will be sore at the least, or end up injured.  Ask me how I know...LOL

2 miles or 20 minutes to count as a run.... that was the only rule we had, but it is on the honor system.

day 4. 2 mile run on the treadmill. Muskrat I have been running on my forefoot/midfoot for awhile but my cadence was really low. This was causing me to have leg pains for the up and down from the slow cadence and big strides. Today felt alot better and I noticed there was no bouncing.

Big strides in the back or the front?  You look like a big guy.  I used to think that to run faster I would take longer strides.  The problem was that I was stretching way out in front and that was what was causing my "pains".

I am not a pro by any means...just sharing what I have learned and what has helped me.  I noticed that when I focus on landing my foot under my hips I have no pain (no matter what my stride length is).  I also notice that when I want to run faster, I concentrate on the "toe off" and pushing the ground behind me - causing much longer strides.  Instead of reaching out in front for a longer stride, I push behind me further for a longer stride.  I think of it as if I were trying to push the belt on a treadmill when the treadmill is off.  My cadence is pretty much the same whether I am running easy or hard - I just change how long my stride is.  Hope that makes sense and is helpful.

Again - not a running coach.  I can't say that enough.  Just sharing what has helped me.  If any coach reads this and thinks any of this is "bad" - please chime in.

Derailed.

Long run two nights ago.  An easy, short 4.5 miles last night. Felt great all night and felt perfectly fine all day today.

I was just standing around in a store an hour ago when my left foot suddenly started to hurt to the extent that it was difficult to walk out of the store without a limp in the area of the peroneal longus tendon (outside of the foot, in front of the heel, even with the arch but to the outside, so not PF).  I was wearing flip-flops at the time, so I'm currently blaming the footwear and have put my running shoes on for support.  In taking quick test jog steps in the house, I could *probably* run, but I am not chancing it... shutting it down for tonight and my streak ends at 25.

I've done enough runs to have already hit 30, so I'm not terribly upset, and I'm hoping that it's just the equivalent of a knot or "charlie horse" and that a night of resting will let me do a treadmill run in the morning.

Aha who to trust Left Brain or Muskrat.....mmm rat in your name not sure!  I don't get out of bed for less than a 20 min run so that's easy!  Trying for 90mins tonight down at the beach just a scenic nice run taking it all in and clearing my crowded head....
