They give you your member number and (I think) a temporary printable card as soon as you register online. The ones I signed up for this summer had an option to purchase either a day or year membership during the race registration, so I took care of both at once.

Thanks, I went ahead and signed up for the year and see where I can print the temp card. Now I just need to find some ink so I can print it

NAME: Bill, 41 years old.

STORY: I've been athletic all my life. Mainly baseball and football up until my junior year of college. Always fast-twitch types of sports. Got into running with my wife about 3 years ago. I've battled various injuries through this process but my competitivness won't let me give up. I was really making a lot of progress last summer and got hurt Labor Day weekend training for a 5K. I ran the race hurt and still set a PR. I am just now trying to get back into training and want a goal to shoot for.

FAMILY STATUS: Married to a very supportive woman. We have two daughters ages 5 and 8. I'm a teacher/coach and have my summer off. I'll be Mr. Mom for the next two months!

CURRENT TRAINING: I have not been training much over the past 6-8 months. Just enough running to stay in fair shape. I'm a small framed guy and have typically lost weight pretty easily. Tomorrow morning I'll be on my bike for the third time in a week. Hopefully I can lose 10-12 pounds this summer. Swimming is a whole other story. Haven't done much in the past two decades! Was a fair swimmer earlier in life. Just need to get in the water and see how it goes!

THIS YEAR'S RACES: I haven't raced either. May enter a 5k sometime in the next month so I can see where my fitness level is.

2013 RACES: I'm considering a duathlon at the end of June and possibly my first tri the first part of August. Just have to see how things go. A couple 5k's will probably work their way in there somewhere.

BEER PREFERENCE: Do I have to pick just one? I drink just about everything. Sam Adams, Abita, Coors Light, Bass...I could go on and on!

Welcome! Summers off sound nice and having that nice supportive family structure is key to your success. Good Luck!

We're due to have #3 on June 13, so I took Friday off to hopefully ensure we don't have #4. Whoever says they were back out on the road s/b/r ing the day after that procedure is a) either superman, b) not human, c) or is lying. Here it is Monday, and I got something swollen the size of a softball down there, and the feeling of a perpetual kick to the b##@s.

Hoping to get back after it soon with weights/ cross fit exercise/ and s/b/r.

You are a good man...to keep us from having #4 I had to go under the knife two days after having #3...ok that was 22 years ago and I think I still have a touch of resentment...just saying! I still think he should go under the knife, if I can't make babies he shouldn't be able to either! Ooops can of worms all over my desk!

This is hilarious! Yeah, I had the "talk" with wifey about this, and I knew I had lost before even bringing it up. Having watched her push out a 9lb12ozer our first time and an 10 lb 14ozer for #2, then losing over 130 lbs last year only to have me do "it" to her again... Let's just say she put it to me this way. Either you go "take care of it. or I will."

its like my future is being laid out in front of me.

Well I survived the holiday weekend (I think) have over 40 hours of overtime in just the last 5 days, and it looks like my days off this week, will not be days off! Gotta love summertime! Anyway, enough whining, I have been slacking off majorly on my workouts and need to get back into it. So to help keep me motivated, I think we need a really good June Challenge. Seeing how I will have my 35th birthday this month, I was thinking maybe I should try for a 35 in 30. Anyone want to join me? Minimum 30 minute workout bike, swim, run, or strength will count.

It has been a really long time since I've posted. The past month has been pretty crazy but good crazy. After 30 hrs. of labor my wife gave birth to our first born. He was a big boy so things didn't go as planned. (11lbs 9oz, 22.5 in). We spent a week in the hospital because he caught pneumonia from the long labor and C-section. Everyone is home, healthy and happy.

With that its time to get back into training so I can make my boy proud. Luckily I haven't gained any weight because I sure as hell haven't been watching what I eat. I need to get some good training in but not push it so much I injure myself. (1st sprint is 8/15/13).

Its great to see the new faces and I'm so glad this group stayed together. It was and I'm sure still will be a great place for advice and motivation.

  • ... Anyone try that new New Castle blonde?

  • Congrats on the new addition to the family! All 3 of our kids were in the 10+ pound range but we never made quite 30 hrs of labor. Get some sleep when you can.

I hit the magic 12 with my swim this morning! I'm going to celebrate by going to the Braves/Blue Jays game tonight with a vendor from work. The beer will probably be low grade, Bud Light etc, but it will be free!

I have lately been on a tear of doing events with out training that needs to stop- so I have to get back in the groove.

Yesterday I ran the Bolder Boulder (10k) and the week before I did a 62 mile bike ride. Both extremely under prepared. Let's just say I'm a little sore.

I did actually drink the Michelob Ultra they handed me at the finish however :-)

I hope everyone is having a great season- I'll do some reading to catch up.

Hey Kate, good to have you back!
Time to start logging your training so we can crush those bad habits out of you!!
Yikes that is a nice couple of weekend races to do with no training....
That is the only time it is okay to drink a Multra beer!

Thanks Thor! I can use some help with crushing those bad habits. I added what I can remember from last week and promise to log going forward!

And I promise to reward myself with better beer when I start training better!

Hello everyone! Thank you for the well wishes. I look forward to getting to know each of you.

One question...what guidelines are you using for your training? Is it a set plan that you follow closely or do you set weekly/monthly goals that you reach as your time allows? For example, I biked again today because my wife leaves town tomorrow and I won't have another chance for about a week. Honestly, I really needed to run today but I felt I needed to bike instead. I can run while she's gone. Currently I have no set plan. I structure my workout as time allows and how I feel that day. What are your thoughts and how do you manage your time? Thanks!!!

I'm still so new myself all I can add is what I personally do. I use a plan here on the BT site to follow and keep me from over doing it and getting injured again. I also use this sites coaching services and she keeps me healthy as well as helping with any questions I have since I'm clueless . I am just doing what works for me and keeps me moving forward.

On a side note I thought I was a teenager again and hurt my knee which took me out for 5 months because I did too much too soon so be careful and listen to your body. Certain pains are there for a reason...listen to them and rest when needed.

Thanks Alex. I understand where your coming from. I tend to over train too. It's taken me off the road many times. Looking at a few plans it looks like I'm doing it again! From what I've seen, most beginner plans keep training sessions around 30 minutes. I'm biking well beyond that. My runs are about in that time range. No swimming yet. Hope to start next week. Thanks again for your input!

That's awesome. I find hitting milestones like that is a big confidence booster for upcoming races, and validation that I'm doing something right.

I read a bunch of plans and got a sense of what the purpose of it is - most plans are just a schedule of periodization, in a "build by 10% for three weeks drop down to week 1 for a week, then start again" etc. etc. I will be using a 16 week plan from Garmin for my marathon, but that's a bit more serious.

For the most part, at my level, I just need to be building aerobic base, which means lots of low- and moderate- difficulty workouts. The hard part for me is checking my ego and keeping it light. The other part is just listening to my body and keeping it in 2nd gear, instead of going for broke and leaving myself sore and beat.

I've also joined a masters group (five days a week!) recently, so I'm going to focus on that (swimming is my weakest) in the interim, and fit in the swims and bikes around it.

When I was following a plan last year I chose a BT one and focused on the weekly requirements. So based on my schedule and how I felt I tried to get all of the workouts from the week in in whatever order worked for me. I found it worked really well. That said I was only doing sprints- not sure how it would work for longer plans.

Doing lousy on the 12/17, today's bike/run will only be my 4th. I was traveling all last week and expected to get in some workouts since we have access to a great pool, but only made it once.

    How's everyone else's weekend going?

Get your a$$ out on the road!

I agree, you cannot live on celery sticks and rice cakes. sometimes ya gotta let loose and carb load..er, or something like that!
I am sitting at 10. Should reach 12 tomorrow. Going to try swimming in morning and a bike ride at lunch!

Well, it ain't gonna happen for me this month. Dawn run and lunchtime cycle today, but that only puts me at 6. I'd have to do two workouts a day for the next three days, and I suspect I'd break something at that rate, so I'm going to humbly accept jeers and get serious about the next one. Should have been more diligent that week on the road.

Jeers nothing...head to 7/11 and get your ice cold Coors Light...savor the flavor!! No jeers here just the Coors Light penalty

Oh wait would that be a jeer?

Alex - Love the Coors light penalty... I have used it as my motivation since I started. So drink up - but here's what you should do if you want to be really motivated. Set yourself a reasonable goal for June (in terms of distance and or miles) and come up with a reward to give yourself if you reach your goal. But what I find really motivating is to buy a Coors Light 40 and I stick it whereever I need the motivation. Sometimes it's in my gym bag other times its on the top of the fridge. Put it where you can see it knowing that if you fall short of your goals for June - then it's the silver bullet for you If 40 ounces of Coors won't motivate you - I don't know what will.

    Good luck!

    Hi All:

I got in the pool this morning for a short swim. My shouldier is hurting me again but I still wanted to get the workout in - so I shortened it by 25% My sholdier aches as I type this and I'm hoping that a weekend without swimming will heal it right up! Gonna get in a long run this afternoon. I'm gonna pretend I'm Alex - with the temps getting close to 90 and a ton of humidity - it shouldn't be too hard.

Question - Has anyone figured out how to add a table to a forum post so we can add our weekly goals? If so, please let me know. If not - what ideas does the group have to post the goals? (for those of you who are just joining us - every week I post a table and everyone fills in their goals and the reward they will give themselves for achieving that goal. It's a great tool to let us support each other."

Finally - today is the day when I'm hoping to come to some sort of agreement with my boss. Please pray that we are able to come to some kind of compromise. Thanks!

I hear ya...it's Africa hot here. I'm all the way south west near Fort Myers. On the gulf side we don't get the wind like the east coast. We are far enough south that the palms get coconuts. I think the coconut line stops in Sarasota or near there.
