Expert 1144 Kansas City, MO | Subject: RE: Artemis's Group - FULL OK, I have a question for our swim experts here: would an increase in volume from 10,000 yrds in March, to 20,000 in april be a bad thing? I'm thinking about swimming every weekday morning and using the afternoons for running/biking. Thoughts? |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: Artemis's Group - FULL I think you'll be okay if your plan is to swim more often. It might be problematic if you decide to go from swimming 1500 in a workout to 3000 without taking the time to increase slowly. You'll be a little sore, but I think you'll be fine. Good luck! jcdenton2000 - 2007-04-09 11:48 AM OK, I have a question for our swim experts here: would an increase in volume from 10,000 yrds in March, to 20,000 in april be a bad thing? Regular 90 Mechanicsburg, PA | Subject: RE: Artemis's Group - FULL I think that increasing the yardage for swimming is easier than running. However, you would want to make sure that you are stretching your shoulders and arms before and after every practice. I am thinking on doing the same thing with running. Take my weakest sport and put emphasis (more training time) there. Just a thought... I started using fins with the swimming for about half the practice. I have heard that it helps the running. Personally I believe my running has gotten better (much more outside these days), so I have kept up on it. Good luck! |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: Artemis's Group - FULL I don't usually swim with fins, but it's interesting that it might help with my running. I have been swimming with paddles, which I find increases arm strength and helps make sure I'm doing my pulls right. |

Expert 1144 Kansas City, MO | Subject: RE: Artemis's Group - FULL I've thought about using paddles, I just haven't done it yet. I may have to try them out tomorrow morning. I took today off just to rest up completely. I'm just so excited to know that I can go run 2 miles tomorrow, that I didn't want to do ANYTHING that might get in the way, even swimming. LOL! |

Expert 1144 Kansas City, MO | Subject: RE: Artemis's Group - FULL Since we haven't heard from Jenny since we got started, I'd like to invite my friend Mitch (Yeshuafreak2007) to join our mentor group, if that's possible. He's brand new to tris and running and would probably really benefit from the support. What does everyone think? |

Regular 90 Mechanicsburg, PA | Subject: RE: Artemis's Group - FULL I say 'welcome'. I think we may have driven Jen away with our dedication. Personally I feel like this blog has done great with keeping me in gear during the dark months. ===================== Yes I use the paddles also. My left side is weaker. I believe that the paddles forces me to even up my stroke on both sides. So I like to use them at least once a week. The fins I have been using in every workout... about half a workout. Alternate breathing is not my forte but I am not giving up. Running question.s.. (1) I am getting my distance up there but my time is not moving. Should I shorten my runs and put in some sprint workouts? How do I get my run times faster? What is the best techniques? (2) Also my feet begin hurting around mile 3.5 until the end. They hurt on the ball of the foot. I got new sneakers.. even got tested for them to make sure they were right for my run. Any suggestions??? How can I work on distance if I can't feel my toes??? They get better once I stop running and walk deliberately. Could it be my run? How I plant my feet? |

Expert 1144 Kansas City, MO | Subject: RE: Artemis's Group - FULL Running - I would think perhaps your laces are tied too tight, too. Foot strike can also play a big part, too, but it's harder to fix that, I think. I don't recommend speed work until you have a solid running base built up. Maybe throw in some slightly faster running every couple weeks, but really, be patient and your times will drop. I ran 10:00 min mile pace last year and I am running 8:00s now. I did nothing but run a little bit over the offseason. Stride turnove is a big part of speed: the faster you turn over, the faster you run. You might look to see if you can shorten your stride - you don't want your feet way out in front of you (picture a sprinter), you want them landing beneath you. If you're heel-striking, you may have too long a stride. I shortened my stride and it helped a lot. I now land on the mid-foot and it's helped. Good luck! Thanks, everyone, for giving a thumbs up for Mitch to join us. I'll wait for Jen's response before I invite him over. |

Regarding fins and paddles (Robert): I use short fins... definitely agree with the issues with the long fins. They don't do much for your swim or stroke. I feel it in my thighs and calfs when use them... especially the quads. |

Regular 90 Mechanicsburg, PA | Subject: RE: Artemis's Group - FULL Thank you for all the running advice. I have been asking around about my problem and have finally found out the issues.... laces too tight. Who knew???? Apparently your foot swells after a bit and mine ran out of space. So now I am experimenting about what is too tight and what is just right. Great job team!!! |

Expert 1144 Kansas City, MO | Subject: RE: Artemis's Group - FULL What I have found that works best is to not "put your back into it" when you lace up and tie your shoes. I've seen people at the shoe store literally put their entire back in to lacing up their shoes, and then complain when the laces rub the tops of their feet. LOL! Your shoes should be snug, but not tight. Typically, I only loosen the top two eyelets when I take my shoes off, and eventually, you'll see marks on your laces from wear. |

Expert 1144 Kansas City, MO | Subject: RE: Artemis's Group - FULL Well, since we haven't visited in here for a bit, I thought I'd drop in and see how everyone's training is going. For me, my leg is definitely on the mend and is feeling a LOT better, now that I've slowed down my pace. Running fast is an ego boost, but running without pain makes training a lot easier! My swimming has been fantastic this month, which has been a huge help during my recovery. I get my new bike in three weeks and I just can't wait! I rode my "old" bike yesterday and enjoyed the ride, but shifting was a workout on its own. Well, I hope everyone is doing well with their training and is enjoying the spring! Jen - I hope you get to feeling better soon and that your visit to the doctor's is productive! |

Regular 90 Mechanicsburg, PA | Subject: RE: Artemis's Group - FULL Kelli here checking in... The workouts have been great all winter. I find myself in the midst of some changes now that the weather is beginning to break. I prefer working out in the weather than the machines. The morning workouts are fine at the gym but I was getting bored of the routine. So I have been shifting things around and going out when I get back from work. My kid has been busy after school so I have been able to accommodate the changes. Today I am playing hokey from work so I am going to do a brick of bike and run. Probably about 15 then a 2.5 run and then bike again to get home. Yeah!!! The swimming is going well. I have slacked on it as I know it is where I have the most experience. Can't say it is the best wisdom as in a race a swimmer can get ahead there before the others get started. The run has been improving as I am running with a faster person in the morning workouts. She is really pushing me so I feel good but very tired after the workout. Biking outside has been FANTASTIC!!! It is great to finally be out there. This weekend's ride was very revealing to me. My hills are much better and my sprints are there too. I guess all the work this winter is beginning to pay off. We will see soon with the race coming in a month. Hope everyone is well. |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: Artemis's Group - FULL Erin, congratulations on your great results at the duathlon!! I'm glad your training is paying off. I feel like the slacker in the group with my training right now. I'm really proud of all of you for getting out there and doing as much as you can. I can't wait to see what we're all able to accomplish this year. I'm getting better as far as my energy levels. I had another doctor's visit this morning and they are checking my thyroid levels again. We're probably going to increase my dose, so hopefully that will provide more benefit. I do have to have an ultrasound tomorrow to make sure that there isn't anything wrong with my thyroid (nodules, masses, etc.) that is causing me. I'd appreciate any good thoughts you guys can send my way. I'm a little worried. I'll keep you posted and leet you know as soon as I hear anything. Other than that, I've had a migraine for about a week. It's finally starting to go away today. Hoping to get a run in today (even if it's short). I really need to do more biking. My MS150 ride is only 5 weeks away! |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: Artemis's Group - FULL Quick update on the medical things: I had an ultrasound of my thyroid gland today. The tech told me she couldn't really give me results, but she did walk me through what she saw. No major masses or nodules or things that need to be removed (yeah!!). She did say that the texture of the tissue looks wrong. It should be solid and the same, but mine has holes in it and sort of looks like it's being eaten by moths. Waiting to hear from my doctor, but I don't think I'll need surgery (what I was really worried about) and I'm thinking it's going to be a matter of treating. Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayers! It's nice to have headed my way. |

Expert 1144 Kansas City, MO | Subject: RE: Artemis's Group - FULL Well, it's that time of the month again! No, not THAT time of the month... :P I'm talking about setting our goals for the next month of training. I have found that by setting some goals for myself, I WILL work harder and get more accomplished. I've had a great weekend, and was able to catch up on my rest/sleep, so I'm feeling good. I'm still taking tomorrow off, as I have a lot to do at work tomorrow, plus my visit to the doc. But, here's what I think my May goals will look like: Swim: 14,000 yards Run: 50 miles - yeah, that's quite a jump, but with a lot of 2-3 miles runs, plus a 4 and a 5 miler, I should be ready for my 10k on June 2. I WILL obey the 10% rule this time and really listen to my body MUCH more now. Bike: 30 miles - yeah, it's not a lot compared to the swimming and running, but with the 10k coming up, I'm focusing more on building up the running. I decided to bag the tri in June and keep building up, focusing on the tri in August. anyway, great work this month everyone, keep it up!!! |
