MrsUSMC - 2007-10-10 4:27 PM About that Life thing? I'm fortunate to be married to a triathlete, so we have no life, even together! LOL We go out to eat one night a week just to sit across from each other and really talk.
If only I could find a triathlete to marry! Though I think I will have to get awesome at triathlons first to garner their respect. All the athletic guys I know don't want to date girls unless they're as fast as they are...sigh

Clearly you've overlooked half of the BT contingent--the male half--who are just dying to date you, except they're all already hitched or hooked up

I keep tellin' ya, ya gotta move out to Southern California. We could use some good writers here. We got hot athletic dudes on every street corner, at least where I live, and I'm not lying about that. They're growing on trees--they're low-hanging fruit--and very available, and also willing to, ah, "coach" athletes slower than they are.

Hehe, yeah I think I won some points after I posted my picture under that photo thread on COJ awhile back

I USED to have a triathlete boyfriend, actually. He wasn't racing at the time, but he was super-competitive in late high school and college, and had been training for Olympic trials (Athens) until he busted a knee. But he still had the rockin' 4% body-fat body - and the shaved legs. Hot d@mn... Right after we broke up (over two years ago now), he had said he was thinking about getting back into them...I keep wondering if I'll see him at a local race. He's married though, or at least last I knew he was, as he met some chick and got married less than a year after we broke up (who knows, could be divorced already :-P). Sometimes I consider moving if it means I'd actually have a shot at meeting some guys...there is one guy I know from church who does triathlons who's SUPER hot, but I don't know him that well - slowly working on that though

BunnyB - 2007-10-10 9:06 PM So, Yanti, tell me about your new avatar? You said a few days ago there would be a new one coming on the 15th. By my calendar, you're 5 days early. Regardless, I'm very intrigued by it.

Well ... even the TANers (WHOOPS! Did I just say that, here?) were getting freaked out by the large hairy creature on my face ... and I had also promised -- oh shoot, now I can't remember who -- that I'd feature my tattoo as October's avatar.

Of course it just so happens that I have a picture of Rosie adjacent to my tattoo, but I thought I'd make the whole thing bloody and eerie. I mean, would you want ANY of that bumping into you in the night?

Fellow Bumpers -

I don't want you to think I've fallen off the when you look at the totals after this week - my total will probably be low - maybe even non-existant

I had a little mishap and cut my ankle - thus Yanti's reference to bloodletting - ewww!

It's in my log if you want the gory details ( this is also a shameless plug for inspires - LOL - I love to inspire and to be inspired!)

Seriously, I've posted it on a couple of other threads and don't want to bore everyone with another rendition of the story.

Don't worry though, I won't let you down!  As soon as this stupid cut heals enough that I can put a shoe on, I'll be back at it!

BunnyB - 2007-10-10 11:39 AM Hey Bump gang! I have a running question for you guys. Today is another run day for me. Per my conservative C25K, my cumulative running time "bumps" from 2 minutes to 4 minutes today. I still need to figure out how I want to break that up into my total time. I haven't decided if I want to just increase my four 30 second intervals to four 1 minute intervals or whether I want to keep doing 30 second intervals but do them more frequently. Is one way better than the other? Your thoughts? Thanks!

My recommendation is:

Walk 4-5 minutes.

Then do 8 x (30 sec run, 2.5 min walk).

That will put you at 28-29 minutes.  Then walk the last minute or 2 (or if you want to walk a little longer...    ).

And, do it all with a HUGE smile!

Awesome advice - this is actually exactly how I started and it works really well

Can't remember who helped me, but it was someone wise, that's for sure!

Okay, so I just had to share this because I think this is funny, but I just went and checked the standings for this year's Virginia Triathlon Series - both races I did were part of the series - out of 317 women in my AG, I am number 53! Now, I am #53, not because I am awesome, but because mostly everyone after me in the standings only did 1 race out of the series and I did 2, however, the number SOUNDS impressive, and so I will keep this number in the back of my mind as a motivational tool

Hey, gang, we need to work on boosting the confidence of our team leader, who today alone has suggested that she feels fat, not awesome, and not fast enough to be appealing to the cute fit boy triathletes in the neighborhood -- all of which are definitely not perceptions shared by the rest of us, I am sure!

Pleae go remind her how terrific she is ...

holy smokes! I spend 12 hrs at work in the ER and come home to162 messages in my in-box with our thread jumping around 3 pages.  what a chatty bunch we are today.

An ER first...I've been an RN for over 20 years, 13 of those years chasing ambulances in the ER (told you I was nucking futs)...today I had this ENORMOUS  pt come in by squad (we're talking 500 plus pounds).  She sleeps on a mattress on the floor cause she broke her bed when she fell out of it last spring (also broke her leg...)Ran out of her meds and money to get them.  Her teenage daughter helps her bathe once in a while.  Oh yeah, she was RIPE.  I wound up giving her a bath which I have NEVER done in the ER unless the pt got bodily fluids and other assorted lovely stuff all over them. But this one got a purposeful bath as in find the soap, mouth care stuff, lotion and special wash for the ultra stinky zones.  A part of hands on care I haven't done much since getting out of the ICU...At least I managed to help get her admitted so she can get what she needs.  It's pathetic how people have to live anymore but so much of that is by their own choice to WALLOW in self pity rather than figure out how to move beyond the circumstances life deals them

thanks for letting me rant...

I broke in my new shoes tonight and added 1.53m to my total. I lurv my new shoes! Both my calves ached equally instead of my getting some major lactic burn in my right one. However the balls of my feet were burning when I got home but Husband tells me this is because I've switched from walking shoes to running shoes and most runners have a tendency to dig their toes in. Hark! Was he hinting that I'm a runner? Yeah, baby!

I worked for a company called Kinetic Concepts for a while. One of the products we made was hospital bed that were designed for grossly obese patients up to 800lbs. The frame on this thing was stronger than most of the cars I've driven. It's insane that people get up to that weight, and I have nothing but respect for what you do and the fact that you didn't hose her down with a fire hose.

Maybe it's not nice of me but since I've started on my journey to change my life and lose weight I've started to feel disgust and resentment toward people who let themselves become grossly obese. I know I shouldn't judge, and that some people have genuine medical conditions, but at the same time most people just do it to themselves. One guy I work with started at my company weighed about 450, had to have quintuple bypass, and got down to 250. Now about a year later, he works on 5 or 6 Mt Dews 6 or 7 cigs and who knows how much junk food. Now I'll admit to throwing down with Snickers or some Oreos (otherwise known as crack) but there is a limit. Oh well there is my rant...

Bonus points for Paul for a fast fast track run! Upping the intensity doesn't officially count for anything in this volume-based culture of BT challenges, but it does for me, so you get props and good karma points, not to mention faster at your next race.

Bonus, too, for volunteering at the 5k.

Beleive me the Big bonus is keeping up with runners i could not keep up with a month ago . Really looking forward to The Santa Monica 10 k race on Oct 21 . Will mock run the pace I would like to hit over the next two days.
Volunteering with my daughter was interesting . As a reward got free passes for Six Flags .

Well ... even the TANers (WHOOPS!

I wondered if it was your own tattoo. I have 3 tats myself, so I always love seeing other people's ink, too. Here are pics of mine. You can click on the thumbnail to see a larger view.

I had a great run tonight at the gym. I got in a total of 40 minutes (2 miles) which included my WU and CD. During that time, I also got in 9 intervals of 30 seconds of running followed by 2.5 minutes of walking. I was actually only planning to do the 8 Gail recommended, but then did the time math and realized I'd lost count somewhere along the way and got in an extra one. LOL

Hey! I just noticed that your team has 4 more posts than ours. (Of course, now that I'm posting this, you have 5 more.)

I also have over 300 email notifications that you've all been posting. Imagine my joy.

And since it's now 2 AM, you guys really ARE about to go BUMP in the night, 'cause I've just BUMPED you back to the top of the list. (OK, bad joke. It's 2 AM. And I'm still awake.....)

And now I'm going to pop back over to the Apples. (They're only poison to non-team members.)

Go newbies!

Gail, you're awesome. Will you be my hero, too?

Of course!   But credit where it's due -- I have learned almost everything I know about triathlon (which is still not very much) from Mr. USAT Dev Coach of the Year.  The rest I just make up, so you have to be careful when listening to my advice to figure out which is which!

For you, I'd recommend skipping any running till you feel a-okay.

Gail, can you please be my hero too! I really need one!!! Can you also confine "running" in those 30'' sprints? You said earlier, if I recall, that you don't do distance that much but intensive training. What kind of running practises you do, my hero (hopefully)?

We were also having to factor in a 0% from one team member who we are now going to drop as she has not checked in or logged anything so far in this challenge. That will help things immensely. No worries, we won't be last for long

Yeah, the obesity issue is growing here pretty fast. Now, I know there are larger folk on this site, and they are here trying to change that, and that is awesome, but they are in the vast minority. What's truly disgusting to me is the growth of childhood obesity. Who lets their kids get like that?

obesity is a major problem.  I could go on about its risks and associated problems for days--but since we're all working to either lose or maintain weight losses and improve health we already know the risks.  There's such a vicious cycle in the morbidly obese population...they're depressed because they're fat which contributes to eating out of all the wrong reasons, they're immobile because they're fat and fat because they're immobile.  I've heard of pts who take offense when we don't have supplies large enough to fit them properly to do the job.  Economics make it harder because we've already seen discussions about how much harder it is to afford healthy, fresh  food or appropriate whole grain/lean meat as opposed to a bag of Doritos on sale for a buck or 2.  I wish food stamps didn't cover junk food, that would be just a small start in getting low income folks off it.  I get ticked off about the folks with nail tips, hair extensions and the like with designer hand bags...saying they can't afford their kids antibiotic because you know all the stuff those selfish b@st@rds has could provide the money for the meds.

I worked at a grocery store in high school and so I am somewhat familiar with the WIC program (Women, Infants and Children) - which is supposedly to help families "eat right" - yeah, it covers VERY little - full fat cheese, white bread, full fat skin milk, and cereals with little to no real nutritional value like generic rice krispies. No vegetables, no multi-grain products. Not a whole lot better than junk food if you ask me.

But I digress...

Yay for running! I am actually NOT running today - moved the run to tomorrow. Did not sleep well last night, and I'd run after work except that it's Thursday and I have choir. And Aunt Flo just arrived for her visit, which is NOT fun for me the first day - I'll be fine tomorrow. Which is fine. I planned for 3 runs this week; doesn't matter which days I do them on Running Sunday as well.

I'm happy to be everyone's hero (as long as y'all inspire me, too)!

I was a FOP swimmer and DFL runner/walker.   Surgery in Jan., and  now I can run for the first time ever, and I didn't want to overdo it (or underdo it) so I hired a coach to turn me into "a runner" but without more injury.  He schedules different kinds of runs that mix intensity, duration, and volume.  I did only run/walk intervals for the first 6 weeks.  Now I am working on running longer and faster.  This week is a base week for my Dec. half marathon; the schedule is:

  • Recovery swim (from last week's "longish" elevation run)
  • Run 5 miles, middle 2 miles fartlek
  • Run 5 miles hills, high HR on climbs & walk at top to recover if necessary
  • Run 40 min flat, first half jog and second half fartlek
  • bike an hour easy/spin, Zone1 recovery ride
  • Run 2 hours -- Go the distance!!!!

Next week is harder; today he will tell me what the schedule will be, and I am sure it will have more interval speed runs, like last week did.  I'll post more as I know it.

I know, I was so psyched when I walked out the door in short sleeves and I was cold! Hooray!! Maybe I'll get to wear my cute new long-sleeve bike jersey this weekend It's black and white and pink, Castelli brand - very sexy I'll see if I can find a pic.
