Doh!  No go on the seat post.  He had two pre-orders, those came in, but the rest are on back order.  Dang it!

But the freezing rain and snow might also interfere with your training.  We can't have that if you think you can catch up to me in the pool.

Pool's still open on snow days, don't you worry. You're going DOWN.

Sorry Grace -- while I empathize with your desire for a snow day (thanks for the back-up, BTW, on the "I'm a teacher / yay for snowdays" thread in COJ), I'm on winter break this week. So while I will offer a prayer or two on your behalf, I'm saving the spiritual strength for snow days when I need them. Like, next week. And once a week through my spring break.

But its gonna come down during the day here tomorrow. Over six inches of powder, they're saying. Maybe I'll do the run in snowshoes?

TheMaz - 2008-02-21 3:10 PM Yeah, its not fun training for a spring marathon if you live in the north. And then there's the whole possibility that we might have another repeat of last year's Boston Marathon Nor'easter,
i've been meaning to ask someone who would know, what the hell is a nor'easter anyways??

Nor'easter = big a$$ east coast storm

(Thank you wikipedia, which in between tremendous gaps and inaccuracies can still present understandings that are conceptually above my head):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nor'easter

And on the nor'easter specific to the Boston Marathon, 2007

Chris, my recommendations are a road bike with clip on aero bars, Look pedals, and a Shimano 105/Ultegra mix component set. I've never ridden a 105 rear derailleur, but The difference in shifting between Tiagra and Ultegra was unbelievable. As for frame, Specialized and Trek are probably the two most common manufacturers and therefore will probably be the easiest to locate used or for a pretty good deal. Great frames, too.

Thanks for the rec' -- thats the best case scenario for what I can afford. A used road bike with 105 components, and hopefully tricked out with aero's already, at the very least. My concern is purchasing something from afar not having ridden enough to know what I'm buying or what feels good to me. I mean, I can research the components and their objective quality. But I won't have the opportunity to ride 30-40 miles on a bike to know if the angles are a bit awkward for me or if I'm reaching just a half inch too far. So, I'll be trusting measurements and be doing a few in-house ride tests at local shops. Am I taking this all too seriously? Should I just lighten up and throw down the cash for the next thing that comes up? It seems like a big investment for me, and something I'll want to have for 3 seasons.

So, again, thanks for all the advice. Tomorrow my plan is to have my wife measure me based on the bike fit websites recommended to me in other threads, and then begin to see which frames seem like they'd work best. Then, I'll be surfing classifieds for a month until the roads clear up. If tomorrow is to be any gauge, I do have the time.

I don`t mind running on the treadmill, cause I dislike running in the cold ( today its -7 C I think thats around 20 F (totally gussing). I find that it takes me too long to warm up when running in the cold so I just don`t do it. Anything above +2 C (whats that, 35 for you guys) and I will go out (if theres no ice on the ground).
Last Sunday I ran 2.5 hrs on the treadmill while watching the Daytona 500 race. Sundays will be my big run day just so I have something to watch for that long.
Make sure you don`t buy a bike with less then 105 parts. Anything less is crap ( so I have been told over and over by alot of different people)
Like you the whole bike thing is new for me as well, I`m still learning the names for all the parts on a bike. I have alot of people I work with who are into bikes so they have helped me alot. So I use them for info and equipment. I just changed the cassette on my bike using equipment for 2 others at work.

We're on the same team in one of those monthly challenges.  I've got to swim 25,000 yards this month, and FinstheTerp is going for 40,000.

If you want to bet on who hits their goal first, load up on me.  I was supposed to get there this morning, but I was up till 2am because of bad weather.  I'll be topping 25k on Monday.  However, if you want to bet on who finishes with the most yards, Grace is who I'd put my money on.

Extremely slow.  You win.

Maybe we could settle this at the ping pong table.  Table tennis or beer pong.  Either way.

At the end of xcountry in college we would do a beer run. You would take a six pack of beer and put 1 beer at every mile marker (NCAA Div III=5mile race). At the start everyone has to drink their extra beer and finish within 30 seconds of the first finisher. Then you run as a pack to the first mile marker and do the same thing with the stashed beers. You proceed through the rest of the course. I think this is the best way to train while in college.

I'm familiar with that training plan; I believe many similar events were brought together under a single umbrella, the collegiate decathlon. For what I can remember (and I remember very little), the events included headstand push-ups on the top of a very large can of beer; riding bicycles with alternate hydration systems; and sprinting across open spaces in less fabric than a speedo.

Umm, did it just get quiet in here?
