PennState - 2010-06-04 10:17 AM btw 7,000! Yup 7 freakin' thousand! (bored tonight obviously )

7000!  I'm closing in on my 3 year BT anniversary and I just hit 1250.  I'm going to need to do some catch up over summer vacation

Not crazy about the lemon lime flavor....especially an hour into the workout when it was warm.

Tried it last night....it is definitely strong and kinda tart. Tasted better when I diluted it a bit with some water....

Am I the only person that hopes the FedEx driver misses my house with that Powerbar drink?  I have absolutely no intention of using it on or off course.

KathyG - 2010-06-04 7:56 AM You guys have talked a lot about gear selection for the race.

Someone posted this article in another thread but I thought you might like to read it as I found it one of the best articles that explains gearing needed for tough IM bike course based on your ability (he uses power).

He really sums up why IMLP and other courses ares challenging course for folks with lower power/weight ratios.

His conclusion in gearing:

In my opinion, it’s not until the athlete hits an FTP of 4w/kg that "regular gearing" becomes even worthy of consideration. Even then, a 50/34 at 90rpm will get an athlete to 34mph. The question needs to be asked, should the athlete even need to pedal at speeds faster than this?

For those of you not training with power, not many here on BT have 4 or greater FTP/weight ratio.

Great link Kathy!  Very interesting indeed.  I guess I'm good with my gear ratio then. I hope to get my W/kg ratio a bit higher before the race, but I'm at 4.3 right now.  That's why I think I have a better chance on courses like this.  Gets me away from the fast runners during the bike leg.

Thanks Kathy,

Sadly, I only sort of understand that as I don't train with power and for my 5'7 body, I am way heavier than my power would like me to push, but it is what it is and I will get my butt over the hills!

The hair on my legs slows me down.  I have actually thought about shaving but I'm WAY too lazy for that.

Yes, thanks for the link Kathy.  I read it but all I heard in my head was blah blah blah.

I heard that their making aero helmet like compression socks for the bike leg!

Smooth in the front with a tapered duck bill in the back.

This might be kind of a newbie question (and Im sorry if it was covered already!) but what does everyone wear for the different legs?  Ive done a few HIMs, but this is my first full.  Ive got a trikini for under my wetsuit, and am thinking bike shorts and sleeveless jersey for the bike...but not sure about the run.  I think I want to change (Im not super fast, going for about 13-14) and I was thinking about compression capris...any thoughts??  THANKS!

I'm changing for each one. I figure to be about 14 hours if all goes well, so I want to be comfortable. It's a race, but that doesn't mean I'll be miserable.  2 - 3 minutes won't matter to me - I hope.

Welcome!

I can't answer what the ladies will wear.

I just simply wear tri shorts minimal crotch padding and a tri tank top.  It’s a 2 pieces and I wear it under my wetsuit and never change out of it.

If it looks like a cold rainy day I'll shoot for arm warmers as well.

As others have said, if you feel most comforatable changing for each disipline, then do that.  Most people will wear the same 'uniform' for the entire event.

BUT...what ever you are going to do, make sure you are practicing in that outfit.  If you plan on wearing bike shorts for the bike portion, ride those shorts in training.  The last place you want to find out something is uncomfortable is on race day.

I wear the same thing all day - tri shorts and a tri top, Zoot Ultra is my preference. I had a second pair of the exact same tri shorts to change into for the run and I had new socks as well (HIGHLY recommend a sock switch, it felt like heaven on my feet). A lot of folks change in between each leg, I just found it easier to be in the same thing all day. My skin gets sensitive with the seams after hours and hours and moving them actually caused more discomfort so I was happy. I had arm warmers in case it got chilly.

Practice changing wet if you plan to change after the swim. T1 is really hectic and putting clothes on wet skin can be tricky!

Trigirl- I volunteered at the transition area last year for women in T2.  We helped lots of women change into running clothes.  The area does get hectic so know EXACTLY what you want to wear and don't tie your shoe laces together! =)

I plan on wearing my cycling clothes under my wetsuit and then I'm going to change for the run into running shorts.

Comfort is key.  Especially, in my opinion, for those of us who aren't trying to KQ.

Awesome!  Thanks everyone for the tips!  I probably will wear my bike clothes under wetsuit, and then have a spare run clothes in case.  Good tip on the socks...I didnt even think about that!!

I usually go sockless on the bike but definately need them on the run. I also rub vaseline over my feet before I put the socks on. If it starts to rain, I don't want any blisters. Was very valueable to me in 08 when it rained and rained and rained and rained and rained...did I mention it rained?

Just got back from a hot humid long ride. I look like a human salt lick. White streaks all over me.

6 hour bike, 1 hour run in varying conditions.  Started cold and raining and ended in the upper 80's and humid.

Still stressed out about the climbing.

No socks on the bike, Injinji toe socks on the run.

Oomph tri shorts and a sleevles Under Armour shirt for the entire day.

Marvarnett - I won't be drinking the "Power" juice either....unless I blow up and end up walking, then I'll take a sip while I walk it in

I think I'm caught up - time for a quick nap.  Enjoy your Saturday Ladies and Gents.
