Hey all!
I am just motoring along, going to go for a longer swim this week prior to my vacation.  I am trying to figure out how to do 1-2 long swims with my wetsuit.  The cramping issues I had at the end of my HIM have me a bit concerned and want to get this worked out ahead of time.  Been watching the IM forum and reading the nutrition threads.

Diane - haven't checked back with your thread, have you decided what your going to do?  Also, I saw you mention that you may move back East, any idea where?

BTW, Congrats to Mav on your Tri last weekend, she kicked tail!

Gary, I'm gonna keep the bike, it'll come in handy on the East Coast when I want to go out and ride in icky weather... I'm currently looking for a job in the Philly metro area... so, not exactly sure where I'll be living, but somewhere near there. If you know of any Oracle PL/SQL jobs in that area, let me know!

Hi All!
Yes we can add another finish line. I did a sprint She Rox Tri last Sun. I had a group of 15 mentees and it was SO much fun to watch them all finish. This was the first tri I did 4 years ago, so its become a "tradition". I will say its a horrible race!!! There are SOOOOOOOOOOOO many newbies that if you actually try to race its dangerous. SO next year I will either volunteer or mentor again, no race. I placed 10/131 in my AG...which was pretty good. I am most pleased that I came in 43rd overall on my bike split and actually beat 2 elites. All the biking I am doing is paying off

I have been in contact with Bryan and he has told me to let ya'll know that he has not forgotten us but he is in the process of moving as well as training for his IM. Damn he is impressive!!!LOL

Everyones training is looking good. Billy and Amy are up soon!!!!!!

Marianne, WHOHOO! Nicely done! I bet it was an awesome feeling to see all your little baby birds finish!

Hey all, I have a couple of questions, hoping you can help me. My knees and my back have been killing me! My knees, I notice mainly after I go bike and then run. The brick runs haven't been long (1.5-3 miles), biking either. For example, today I did 17.5 mi on the bike and then 1.4 mi run. My knees are hurting bad when I get up from sitting down. I wonder if my technique on the bike is wrong? there may not even be a technique, and I may be reaching for something that isn't there, but I thought maybe I'm pulling or pulling through wrong or something of the sort? It's not like I bike for hours and hours..

My back. Maaaan, last week and a half it's just been killing me. It hurts after long runs, but goes away after an ice bath. And today, again, just really tight and unhappy. I see a holistic chiro every 2-3 weeks (ironically, it started hurting after my last visit to him, so i've been walking around saying Dr Jim messed me up), usually i feel great.

My bike is 4-5 years old, it's a starter Jamis road bike (about a $900 bike, I think i got it for $560), the guy I bought it from did the tune up a couple of months ago and said he thought I maybe need to sit closer and higher, as he was concerned my arms would start getting tired at about 45 min point, the way everything is positioned now. I wonder if that has to do anything with my discomfort.

Any ideas? I want to keep biking, but then the knees and the back have to go, and i kind of need them for running

Lena - +1 on the bike fit. There is definitely a certain amount of time in the saddle that you need to build endurance but  I think you should get another fitting.

Heading off on vacation tomorrow, not sure how much I will be able to post.  Back the following Sunday.

Gary, would you say that spinning classes contribute to that endurance? or is it mainly just putting in the miles on the road bike that we are talking about? I definitely have not been biking as much as I planned to/need to this summer, but did spinning classes in the winter/spring very consistently.

Lena, can't really help you there as the closest I have come to a spin class was the bike machine at the hotel a couple of weeks ago.  IMHO, I do believe that spending time on your bike is most important.  Getting used to being in the saddle, on the bars, etc is critical and any thing other than your bike is only building your leg muscles.  Just my opinion and may be one of the experts can chime in.

Hey all,

Just checking in after what feels like a long absence. Been having trouble "committing" to registration for the Lobsterman. Biking and running seem to be fine but I am so intimidated by the swim - 1500m OWS. That said, I've finished week 2 of the six week "Zero to 1650m" swim program and so far I am on track.

I have at least made a hotel reservation for the race weekend, I've filled in the reg form. I just have to actually drop the darn thing in the mail ...

One more week of work then 2 weeks of vacation at the family cottage in PEI. Yabba dabba doo!!

Hey all!  In Atl.  Things going okay, spent 3 hrs in urgent care yesterday with DS who has pink eye.  Ugh.

Add another finish line for me as I ran a 5k with the family.  Son beat me by 50 seconds.  Havent been doing much run training but will need to so I can avenge my loss!! LOL!

Later!

To whom it may concern.  I rode the Ironman course yesterday in Louisville.  112.7 miles in 6:43.  Sounds slow, but let me tell you the rest of the story.
1.     Had to ride at someone elses pace, I didn't know the course.
2.     After the group spread out (maybe 90 riders), I was able to find someone riding at the pace I was looking for.
3.     Found a group of 3 others and we hooked up, until........
4.     They wanted to stop at an aid station and get aid, use the bathroom, etc.  I had to stop as well, didn't know the course
5.     After an eternity (5 to 7 minutes), I saw another rider that knew the course, so I jumped on the bike and caught up with             him
6.     We rode together for 15 miles maybe, until I had to crank hard going up a hill and screwed up my chain.  It was skipping
every third or fourth rev, and I couldn't use the small chain ring.  At about mile 30.  Remember, I am in the hills of                   Louisville!!!!!!!
7.     After fighting this malfunction for about 30 more miles, I decided to call it quits, go to the hotel and lick my wounds.
8.     Wait a minute, if this happens in the Ironman, I can't quit, I need to tough it out.  (no small chain ring in the hills)
9.     I did the last 52 miles on a malfunctioning bike, that dropped the chain everytime I had to crank up a hill, skipped on level           flat roads, and couldn't use the climbing gears.
10.   Still averaged 16.7 mile per hour even with the stops, breaks and all other distractions.

I am so Ready for IM Louisville.

What I wouldn't do for a time like that!!!!  That's my goal for Tour de Tucson... hopefully, I'll make it!  Anyway, Slow is relative... GREAT job on your ride - I hope you got your chain problem fixed.

Billy, holy crap! THat is amazing!! you are most definitely ready!wow! VERY impressive!!!!!

Pete, what do you think about the "zero to 1650" program? I remember reading about it on one of the blogs a few months ago, so i'm curious to see what your impressions are. my first Oly is this weekend and I"m scared of the swim, too.

I have a finish line! Did the Rock'n'Roll Half yesterday! Super well-organized race and post-race stuff. Weather was eeky-hot, humid, everybody was suffering.. i never stop for restrooms and ended up having to stop to pee, lost over 9 minutes at mile 4 And, had the worst Half time I've ever had, 2:43. yikes. My Half time from March in 30 degree weather was 2:24, so of course, I was disappointed with the time, but it seems that was just the ticket for the day-i have a fast friend who was hoping for 1:47 and came in at 2:02. oh well, I finished!!!! Celebrating that

I do think i pulled a muscle or smth on my (non-issue) left leg-right by the shin, on the front. Hope it's nothing serious.... the sports doc is on vacation this week, so i'll just have to hobble along and hopefully be ok for the Oly this weekend.

Lena - so far my impression of the Zero to 1650 is favourable but the first 2 weeks weren't a huge stretch since I had been swimming about those distances in my usual lunchtime swims anyway. This week is a more substantial step up so we'll see how it goes.

Had a great long weekend - a lovely 50k bike ride on Saturday and a 10k run on Sunday. Weather was spectacular all 3 days. Yesterday we (me, DW, DS and his GF) went "tubing" on a local river. It was bliss. 4 1/2 hours of floating downstream on inner tubes with a "cooler tube" of snacks and beverages in tow. Sunburned today but worth the pain!

Last night I finished reading Lance's book "It's Not About The Bike". Really enjoyed it even though it is now 10 years old.

Billy - way to go stud. You are so ready for the IM!!!!

This is not a shameless solicitation of funds.  It is only a report on the fundraising for the Janus Charity Challenge.  To date, over $2200, with 3 weks to go!  Very excited about my chances to be in the top fifty.

Hey all!

In Savannah, GA.  Staying at a very cool place called the Marshall house.  Wonderful (semi) little hotel.  Just back from a 2 hr Ghost tour.  Pretty cool.  Only spending one night here but plan on coming back and spending a few days here.   DS has been having fun rubbing in that he beat me on the 5k.  I shall revenge this lose!  Actually if I could convince him to train he could do quite well at it.  Visited Stone Mountain, fun and the laser show was awesome.  Turns out that DD is quite the little climber.

Off to NC tomorrow to see family.

Billy - congrats!!!!  Was the 2nd post the shameless request for money?   J/K!!!!

Diane - Sorry I am a Microsoft guy, what is this pitiful thing you call Oracle?  LOL!

Catch you all later!!

Billy, didn't realize there was a base here, interesting.  Savannah seems like a nice place, just saw a local headline that they will start hosting an RnR Marathon here start Nov of 2011.  We are only spending one night here but have decided we will come back and spend a few more days next year.

Managed a 30 minute run this morning along the riverside.  Will be checking out soon, tour the town a little more than start our trip to NC.

Lena - update on the "Zero to 1650" plan. I am now midweek in Week 3 - done 2 sessions and will do one more tomorrow. Starts with 400m uninterrupted then 4 x 100m, 4 x 50m and 4 x 25m.

It may be a figment of my imagination but yesterday's swim felt much better than I can ever remember. Could it be a sign that I am actually improving?????
