owl_girl - 2012-10-26 2:37 PM Actual comment from a guy in my yoga class today.  "Real men do yoga because that s....'s hard!"  Made me laugh.  Bless his heart.

My sister was just telling me today about a 'power yoga' class she's started.  Sounds right.

I started going to a powear yoga class recently. Fourth class was today at noon. I leave as drenched as after a trainer workout.

Good for you teacher!! I've never tried power yoga. The only yoga I've ever tried are the Giam yoga DVD's with Rodney Yee I have at home and I can't even keep up with those!

Yes, yoga is HARD.  That was the only video in the P90(X) series I could not do.  I'm not that limber...lol

Well it is here, the day I have been training for all year and yes I feel WAY under trained due to injuries and just not a "stud".

I got up at 3:30 to eat and stretch.  I am SO NERVOUS, my stomach is churning, I thought this day would be fun but I'm actually dreading it, due to the swim AND they put the 40+ men in the wave in from on the 39 and below.  I know I will get swam over since there is a 3 minute delay between waves.  This was supposed to be fun but right now I'm dreading it...lol

My next concern is the bike, I have my tri bike loaded but it is supposed to be WINDY today.  I'm not that comfortable on the tri BUT I hate being passed by everyone.  I may swap out bikes due to the wind?  I wish I could ask ya'lls advice right now!  You see, when i started this sport it was to just go out and have fun, should have known that is not my personality.  I don't mind getting beat but I do have to leave EVERYTHING on the course.

I have also come down w/ a cold!

I hope everyone has a GREAT day!

Good luck Karl, I'm sure you will do great! And don't worry those nerves disappear once the race starts and all of your training takes over! Have fun!

Karl, I assume you are well into the race, but if not, you have all the normal feelings. Try to relax on the swim and then the race can really begin for you. Knowing your approach to everything, there is no doubt you'll leave it all on the course and have a great race. Can't wait to hear how it went

Karl I know you are already on your way and I'm too late but I feel this way before almost every race. Why did I sign up this? Did I really pay money to do this to myself in the rain or wind or heat etc. I almost talk myself out of every race! Then I get there and socialize, race, finish and start planning the next. I think it is easier now because I know those feelings will come and I know I will want to race again when I'm finished.

Nerves are part of the game really.  I have yet to race any triathlon where I haven't been nervous about one thing or another.  Last weekend I was nervous about the 5k race I ran.  I commented to Lis on the way over there that "I am nervous!....About a 5k???"  After all I have done in the past 3 years of racing 5k to marathons, sprint tri's to HIM's  I was nervous about a 5k?  Really?

I have come to the conclusion that all the nerves and pressure are internal.  We put so much effort into training, getting ready for this big race (regardless of distance) for months or even a year, then on race day it's as if we forget all of that.  It seems we say to ourselves; "Never mind the 850 miles I ran before my HIM.  Never mind the 3500 miles I rode on my bike!  Never mind the 150,000 yards of swimming!  I have this HUGE race that I am under-trained for!  I don't know if I can complete it!"  ........Been there, done that!!

By now you are on the course and this post won't help for this particular race.  But remember that it happens to everyone one of us in one form or another.  I'll almost guarantee that you stressed about whether you had all of your gear packed and ready.  The best thing to do to alleviate this kind of stress is to make a list and check things off as you get ready.  This helped me a lot last season because I was constantly worried about leaving something behind.  Any stress that you can get rid of is going to be something less you'll have to worry about.

I am sure you're doing fine right now but when you return to read all everyone has posted remember that we all go through what you have already dealt with today.  And it never goes away!  But it does get easier!

Tracy,  Kill that TT today!!  Hopefully the weather will be cooperative for you.  Here's to light winds or at least wind directions that change with you to keep you in a tail wind the entire course.

Thank you!  It's super humid but the temps should be in the 50's.  I think the winds will be light.

Tracy, good luck on your TT today!!

On my end of things, this has been a very busy week.  I screwed up the joist hangers on the house side of the deck and had to re-do them one night...in the dark.  So that has set me back and the upcoming weather is going to push me even further behind my goal.  Oh well.

I had a really crummy mountain bike ride yesterday.  There is so much to work on.  It's such a different sport in general.  Power alone will get your almost nowhere.

1.  Flatted in the first mile - need to increase tire pressure.
2.  Kept coming unclipped from my right shoe - there was a small stick stuck in the front of the cleat I didn't see the first time I looked at it.
3.  Was overheating and couldn't catch my breath - it was warm out and still getting over a head cold.
4.  I'm still slipping out going up steep hills - still have to play with that tire pressure, which has my engineer mind blown because my weight should keep that tire gripping the ground.
5.  Couldn't keep up with the rest of the group - that's just darn annoying.
6.  Finally got ahead of the group at the end only to turn up a slope and get a stick stuck in my rear derrailluer - bad luck.
7.  The bottom bracket of my bike is creaking bad - like something is broken. I just bought this thing!

So the point of me listing all of this is not to just complain (although sometimes it makes one feel better), but to point out that workouts do not always go as planned.  If you can mentally get your head around that there is actually a positive outcome from just getting it done, you will be better off.  Try to stay positive, no matter what the outcome.

Sounds like perfect conditions. You will kill this. Remember the solid warm-up. And if you puke before the finish line, you went too hard, after the finish line, you didn't go hard enough!

Jonathan sounds like you had a really tough ride but I totally agree with you on staying positive when you don't have a good workout. There is always something you can take away from those type of workouts and I also agree they just make you tougher mentally when you can through them.

Great advice from everyone regarding the pre race nerves that we all experience before a race. I am usually a nervous wreck before every race. My heart is beating out of my chest and I feel like I'm going to have anxiety attack. I almost never calm down until I actually start racing. Once I get in the water or I start running only then am I able to calm down and focus. I agree with what Dirk said about trusting your training. It's funny how the people who train the most are ones who worry whether they have trained enough.

I am one week out from the NYC marathon. I can't believe it I have been waiting 3 years to run in this race and yes I am worrying about whether I have trained enough for it! I am going to do my last long run today if you want to call it that. Probably a 10-12 mile two hour run and that will be it. I will probably be shutout for the next 3 or 4 days as Hurricane Sandy is making it's way up east and we are going to get a lot of rain. Food shopping will not be a pleasant experience this afternoon as most people lose thier minds when this happens.

Yup pretty much!!!  Before every race it's like "why am I doing this.......???"  Had this thought most recently before my half marathon!  I was thinking maybe I shouldn't have signed up for this.... But afterwards is the best part!  It feels very good to have done the race, and I find myself wanting to do better for a next time!
