Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Century time! This week will wrap up with a 100 miler on Saturday, we have been blessed with a very slight break in the heat. They moved the start time to 6:30 am too. A long run scheduled on Sunday but I have given myself permission to shorten one or both of these as I see fit. I can turn back on the rally and make it a 65 mile ride and am willing to cut my run short at 10-12 instead of 14. I am really only interested in the first 56 miles anyway. The rest will be enjoying the day and riding rest stop to rest stop chatting with whoever rolls along with me. it will be Gu and Gatorade for 56ish then the rest stop buffet after that. It is possible for someone to do one of these centuries and actually gain weight if they stop at each rest stop. Next week I am eagerly awaiting a recovery week and a possible short trip to Kansas to borrow a car. It looks like that week will be about reduced volume but a bit more intensity then we begin another short build cycle with some race specific stuff before tapering. This will include maybe 2 swims that ask me to dig deep for some 3k meter swims but much shorter runs and long rides in the 50 mile range. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ALEX - Yay for you and Mossman! I have looked at a close-up of the bike course, and that dipsy-doodle at Barnum Dyke and Barnum Blvd should be rewarded by each subsequent pass-through. Neat course! I am twigging to that one a bit, but still leaning towards Orange County Tri that weekend -- if I do anything. As I have said elsewhere ad nauseum, my post-WP decisions will be determined by how the hip responds to the drive. My reckoning has Bridgeport about 70 minutes or so beyond Newburgh; is that about right? Enjoy the 50-miler! Having done that will make the 24 miles of Mossman seem like a walk in the park (or at least a ride in the park! ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 6:08:00 my first "imperial" century ride in 10 or 11 years. Great day, we had rain in the early am and it was drizzling at the start. This is good news! First the whole area needed a good rain, second it knocked the temps down to a comfortable level-73 deg at the start and 81 when I finished. It was just a drizzle so riding wasn't a problem, visibility was fine. The sun never came out so we didn't get baked or steamed. I had no interest in drafting and having that rooster tail of water in my face. The organizers moved the start to 7am due to the recent intense heat and had a 6:30 informal start as an option. I took the option but the heat never happened. Because of the early start and perhaps due to the rain the ride seem less attended than last years so I basically rode alone-no drafting, very little conversation etc. I got the first 56 in 3:13 on my own nutrition and water. I didn't do my rest stop sampling plan, I just kept going, was just feeling good. I paced myself right on the first half keeping in my mind the idea of running a HM after, or in this case riding 44 more miles. I stopped at the mile 80 rest stop to use their facilities took on water and grabbed some brownies and granola bar for my pocket. The rain stopped 2.5 hours into it but came back for a while around mile 85 or so. The sun is out now at my house so I suspect the heat and humidity will hit this afternoon and tomorrow hard. I talked to a few triathletes and saw several others. When I was into cycling before, the tri guys were sort of oddities and rare, now they seem to be everywhere. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey everyone, Well Im bak home and just wanted to give you a quick update on the race and tomorrow I will go in detail. Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jeff great job on your century ride. Ok the race yesterday was really well put on, lots of water and powerade stations on the run along with 2 spots with ice cold rags to put on your head, back or anywhere that needed cooling off. The swim started good for the 1st half out but on the way back it ran into a crowd which I still have a problem swimming in. I started thinking about the folks around me and not my breathing and all and next thing I know I just crashed and could not catch my breath, but I made it to shore and ran into T1 which went pretty well. Oh big problem, I set a goal for this race to finish under 2 hours but guess what, I forgot to start my watch, so that plan on know where I was on the time didn't happen.... Ok on the way out of T1 I jumped on my bike and started to pedal and the chain came off, so off the bike to put the chain back on and then I started to pedal and I have the chain on the big ring in the back and either the small or big cog in the back, I always forget which one is which, but it was the one where when you start off in, you say to your self "Self you are such a dumb #@#, you cant start off in that gear" so I pushed through trying to get started and shifted to an easier gear. The bike other than the start was really nice, flat with a lot of rolling hills and 2 hills that did slow my speed down, but mostly was a pretty fast course. About mile 12 I went to look at my avg speed and guess what I forgot to reset my computer so my totals included my last ride also. The run was flat and about 40% in shade so that was really nice, but when I started to run after about 3 minutes the chest started to really hurt so I went to walking for about 2 minutes then back to running for about 2 min and then run 2 and so on through the entire 3 miles. After the race I realized that I could have pushed it through some of the pain, but I was really afraid to do that knowing my family history of heart problems. I plan now to call my cardiologist tomorrow to schedule a full physical check and also I need to purchase a good affordable HR monitor to keep track that I'm not over doing it. The most important thing is that I now have a new PR for a sprint and I had a blast. This was my 3rd tri and it also was the most fun. I hope everyone had a great weekend and has a great week coming up and Sarah good luck on your new job. Steve - we want a race report and also anyone else that might have done a race. OH I forgot I lost my Road ID in the race somehow so now I have to order a new one. Rats... |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ALEX - I don't know what hit you, but WP and environs was clobbered, beginning Saturday evening. It hit its peak in mid-morning, during the heart of the race. This was the heaviest rain I have raced in, I think. I have said before that I like racing in rain.....but maybe I don't like it quite as much as I like to think I do! ![]() Did you get in the 50-miler? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ALEX again - Thanks for the mileage check on Bridgeport. I have a few days until it sells out, the RD wrote me, and I don't know if I can make a decision by then. The structure/venue REALLY appeals, but whether I can handle the drive and the cost is a different matter, Like sugarplums, though, the race's specific course keep dancing in my head! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JEFF - Nicely-executed "imperial" (never heard that term before)! The thought of grabbing brownies 80 miles into it has a lot of appeal. Manna from heaven? "Rooster tail" is such a good term for it, and I ran into a few myself yesterday. The saving grave, though, was that not only are the shoulders wide, but the whole road was closed to traffic; so, it was easy to move a bit and get out of the tails. That's an interesting comment about the number of triathletes you saw, but I guess it shouldn't surprise me. And does it mean that, like cockroaches, we are destined to take over the universe? Hmmmm........ |

The structure/venue REALLY appeals, but whether I can handle the drive and the cost is a different matter, Like sugarplums, though, the race's specific course keep dancing in my head! STEVE -- I didn't get my 50 miles in yesterday, we got pounded as well. I did get into the gym and ride for an hour and then took an hour spin class so i got a couple of hours in on the spin bike. I was pretty bummed about the weather. In terms of Bridgeport (or any race down this direction) -- you can always crash at my house (if you don't mind cats - I have 3) I am about an hour and 10 mins or so from the Bridgeport race ( I do tend to drive fast so it maybe a bit longer if you don't have a lead foot like mine). I am in a pretty good proximity to a lot of good races (at least I think so) So view this as a standing invitation to crash at my place in Pawling if you want to do races down this way! Alex |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() GEORGE - Those are some good numbers you posted, and as for the 2-hour goal, well, think of it as a qualifying time for the Boston Marathon. That is, a qualifying time for ta particular age group might be listed as 3:30, but as long as one finishes within the 3:30 WINDOW, it counts. So, 3:30:59.........qualifies for Boston! They always allow that :59 of "wiggle-room", so if you ant to view your goal of 2 hours that way --- you did it! ![]() ![]() I will get back to that post later for specifics about the numbers. Also in that post you mentioned Team Magi, but did you leave out the "c" to make it "Magic"? Back in the day, Team Magic was one the premier race organizations in the country, putting on a killer of a long-distance duathlon, Powerman Alabama. I think they hit a rough patch a few years ago when duathlons had little appeal, but now that duathlons are back, maybe Team Magic is, too. Or maybe it's a new group that actually calls itslef Team Magi! ANYHOW, good report --- and if it makes you feel any better, even wily old vets like me can make those mistakes. Forget to start watch? Check. Re-start bike in wrong gearing? Check. Reglect to re-set bike computer? Check. The watch and computer ones have hapened to me on training events in the past month, even, so I'm just a slow learner with those. As for the gearing thing, that last happened to me a year ago with my flat at West Point, so my history with that muck-up is both fairly recent and quite raw. All that aside, you had some strong moments -- the first half of the swim until you bopped bodies, and the bike once you got your chain straightened away. Keep those "victories" firmly in mind, as those are the foundations on which we build beigger successes. As for running and your chest and the doctor thought and getting a decent HRM, that all makes sense. I guess your body tells you when things in the chest ar cause unease, but it might help you to have some numbers so you can back off some as the heart rate is elevating. You don't want to get into spending all your time looking down at the HRM readouts, but I think most HRMs have a beeper that goes off when a certain herat rate is reached. So, if you start feeling lousy when your rate hets into the 140s, say, you can set it so the beeper goes off at 137 or so. On your next training run, maybe make it as much about breathing as about actual running mechanics. Think about breathing "mindfully", paying attention to the quality of each breath. Shallow? Long? Forceful exhale? Full inhale? Maybe do your first mile this way, and then let it go and just carry on, and see if there is a difference. If I lose control of my breathing early in a race, it can take quite a while until I have it about 11% where I want it. Yesteday it wan't until close to Mile 2 that I got it back, which also conicided with the end of most of the gnarlier climbs. Big cngrats on the new PR, and jmighty fine that the race was so much fun for you. And FWIW, an indicator of a well-run race is when they supply wet towels or sponges. Few do, even in high heat, so when it happens it is a great bonus -- and it comes at no small cost to the race organizers. I'm impressed with Team Magi(c?)!! |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I chose to add the word "imperial" because I often don't make the mental switch between Kilometers and miles on this forum. I can do the conversion in my head pretty close-Km to miles is easy, miles to Km's a little trickier. Temperature, weight and volume not so much. I do know that 35 degrees C is not as cold as it sounds Last night I did my long run-14 miles in 2:47 using the same methods as before-short local laps, change bottles at my pickup and walk 1 minute at the mile intervals. I do have a semi goal or perhaps just a "like to" to get my 13.1 time in 2 hours or less. I am hoping that these long slow miles at the end of fairly hard weeks will get me there when I try it on fresh legs. I do get some speed work done mid week but not as much when it has been 100 degrees (F) at 8pm. The schedule this week is much reduced but I think I'll fill the void with extra swimming. I discovered my pool is in yards not meters as advertised. I am now suspicious of all pool dimensions. The 24 hr Fitness pool is advertised as 25 yards and I know it is shorter than my current pool so it may be 20 yards or some odd ball length, the city pool is a meter pool and this one feels the same but I just don't know anymore. So I guess, though I am swimming better-it isn't as great as I thought which might explain why my race swims aren't quite as fast as predicted based on training times. Anyway-1 more build/recover cycle then taper time for Branson. I think I hit 14 miles 2 more times in training but the remainder of my long rides stay in the 60 mile range. Sore today-not as bad as last week and surprising considering my long ride Saturday. I'm guessing I paced it just right. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steve - Yes I did leave off the c for Team Magic. I cant wait to hear your story on the crash and the race. Glad you are ok and the bike. Jeff - great job on the long run. I dont know how you are doing that distance in this heat we have down here and it's hotter in Texas. Johanne - Cant wait to hear your report. Did anyone else race last weekend. My next race is Oct 1st and my son races on Oct 2. I was going to do an Oly on 9/10 but I decided after my last 2 sprints with the chest pains and trying to get in 6 miles on the run, that now I'm going to hold off until the 1st of next year to get an Oly distance in. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Gang....been MIA for a little over a week. Busy training (starting to get into the meat of my Oly training) and of course day to day life, work etc. Glad to hear everyone raced well and safe this past weekend! I too am interested to get some more details on that bike crash Steve! On another note, I bit the bullet and bought the 2011 Felt D16 I had been drooling over! I did my intital fitting, but that was more to get me directionally aligned with the bike. My LBS said this is a process so I am going back in after I have put a 100 miles or so in and do some more tweaking. He said by the time we get to the 3rd and last fitting, I should be dialed in pretty good with the bike. So far so good....I think my body is still getting used to the geometry as I find my hamstrings and glutes are much more sore than when I rode my regular road bike, but I can tell a difference in some of the bricks I have done in being able to get into the run much quicker. If I can figure out how to post a pic I will put it out here. On tap this week is a lot of swimming, decent amount of bike and smaller than usual run. Of course I am trying to fit it all in M-F as I am heading out of town this weekend to surprise an old college buddy for his birthday....going to see Journey/Survivor/Night Ranger....so I may have to break out the '80's clothing! Have a great week of training everyone and good luck for those racing this weekend if I don't get back on here before then!
