First Oly is in the books! Race report is finished and posted.   There's a big surprise at the end of the report, so read carefully. Sealed

I've not thought about July's goals yet.  First we have to finish this bathroom project and survive the family reunion.  Then I'll think about training.  I have another race on the 20th, a little shorter than oly distance.

Pattie and Tanya WTG - really nice races and you both stuck with it!  Very impressive!

June Goals:

R - 4.5 hrs - Done!

B - 10 hrs - Done!

Sw - 5.5 hrs - Done!

Strength - big fat ZERO - did ONE "session" of 4 machines (lat & tri) - totally lame

Not sure about July right now, have a vacation coming up and some life uncertainty as far as schedule goes.  Plus my 16 yo son is in Los Angeles most of the summer so I don't have a built in baby sitter.  Will think about July and post when I figure it out.

I did my oly in June, so I met that goal. I still can't run, although my hip is starting to feel better. July is going to be tough, with a family wedding back east and some other stuff going on. I hope to be able to start running again in a week or two and then get back on track for my HIM in Sept.

Hi gang

I have a mini training tri tonight with my tri group.  I keep freaking out about the OWS and I'm just nervous in general.  Even thought for one second this morning about not going due to "work" - "not enough sleep" - whatever excuse I could come up with.  Completely irrational, but...

I can choose either a 1/4 or 1/2 mi swim, since that's what everyone has trouble with the most, 8 mi bike and 2 mi run.  My stomach is churning.  I know I just need to do it and I think tonight will help alleviate some of this anxiety.

I know this is super wimpy, esp for you IM's.

Anyway, thanks for letting me ramble.

Go!! Your not wimpy, the swim can be hard to get comfortable with! It's different than in the pool. For me its hard to train in open water, and the pool just isn't the same! I honestly believe I become comfortable with the OWS during my IM! I am looking foward to doing a sprint or Oly distance now just to see if my swim has improved! That was the first swim I didn't not panic and resort to breaststroke to make it!

Karen, great training tri yesterday.  Sounds like you had a lot of fun and learned a lot about it.  In the end, yes, it's always about having fun and sounds like you did!

Love the new avatar!

Vacation is over and now I'm back at work.  It was the most awesome week ever, although I didn't get in nearly as much training as I wanted to (unless you count 12oz curls).

I'll be going back to San Diego in 2 weeks for my oly at Camp Pendleton.  I will be undertrained for the swim and bike, but I'm trying not to worry too much about it.

Hope everyone else is doing well.

Oh and I think we're doing goals - if I remember correctly my goals were to finish the mud run (done!) and to swim more.  I have not been swimming more, if anything I've been swimming less.  Bad, I know.

So for my July goals:

1.  Train for my half marathon on 9/13 without injuring myself

2.  Find another tri to sign up for and follow an actual training plan

3.  Swim more!!!!!!!!!!!

4.  Lose the 2 lbs I gained last week, and maybe a couple more if I can

Good morning!
Little late on my July goals, because I really don't have any! The biggest goal is to recover and not be completely lazy. I have some problems with my left leg that I can't really define so I am hoping time will help! Could be IT band, but not like my typical IT band problems. Could be shin splints, but not typical there either. I am taking July off for formal training and concentrating on form and technique. I am planning an OLY in Oct and possibly an Oly or Sprint in Sept. I think I will concentrate on improving in the shorter distances. Truth is, I have never done and Oly, but I think that may be a good distance for me.

Very sad news, but let's all try to run "virtually" this Friday night for Christine.

Take good care, all.

<warning: whining ahead>

I'm kind of stressing out here and need to whine a bit.  My knee is not doing well this week.  I know it's because I haven't been doing my stretches regularly.  Yesterday I had a pretty tough run and although I got through it, I feel kind of beat up today.  And I have a race Sunday.  Now for the big stress.  This race has a 2 hour cut-off for the swim and bike portions.  The swim is 1/2 mile and the bike is 21 miles.  In my head, I *know* I can make it.  But then that little nagging doubt voice pops up.  Uhg!  It's also my first out of town race.  We're going up Saturday and staying over in a hotel.  I don't sleep well away from home.  What about breakfast?  What if I forget something?  Arg!  Someone tell me to HTFU...

Hi Pattie.  Pre-race jitters are certainly normal.  A few thoughts (and I'm sure others will chime in with some advice):

- breakfast: keep it simple if you can.  bring it with you.  For me, it's usually just some energy bars and coffee.  You really don't want anything too heavy anyway.  PB&J or PB and honey or whatever works for you is a possibility. For some, even just an energy drink, but I like something a little solid.

- use a checklist.  so much easier than try to think through/remember everything.  i think there is one somewhere here on BT.  I have one too that I made up that I can post if you like.

- knee - not sure what to say about this.  Is it an ITB issue?  stretch, stretch, stretch!  RICE too if necessary.

- trust in your training.  All your training is what got you to this point and that really was all the hard work.  the race is just the icing on the cake.

- most importantly, have fun!!  you deserve it

- lastly, we all want to read you RR when you're all done with it!

Looking at your logs YOU CAN DEFINITELY BEAT THE CUTOFF!!

Your swim and bike times are totally on target!  Do what you are already doing on the swim and bike!

I need to whine...

I went out to run for the first time in over a month today. It was a slow 30 minute jog on flat pavement. I was in some pain, but I was able to do it. Now my hip is killing me and I can barely walk.

I'm headed in to work in a few hours. I'm going to try to talk one of the xray techs into xraying it for me. I wonder if I have a stress fracture.

I think the possibility of doing an HIM in 8 weeks is about shot. This sucks

You'll be fine!!!!  Just relax!!  I know, easier said than done.  I wouldn't worry too much about breakfast, just have what you would normally have before a morning workout.  You shouldn't need much.  If you don't have a great night of sleep, don't worry too much about it.  You'll be fine and you can take a nap after the race!!  And x2 on the checklist....I have one and it really takes away a lot of the stress of packing.

Hi Syndi.  I can relate to post-race injuries (I even have 2 DNS to show for it already).  Hang in there.  Get it checked out so you're armed with information so you can deal with it accordingly.

Thanks, guys!  I know I'm stressing for nothing.  I told my husband that I was worried about the cut-off and he reminded me that the swim and bike are my best legs.  Now if there was a run cut-off, that would be a different story.  My plan is to go out fast on the swim and bike and simply endure the run.  My knee is still tender, so lots of ice and stretches.

Syndi-  Sorry about your hip pain.  That's so frustrating.  Hope you figure out what's going on with it.

Some of you may recall my bike fit issues from several weeks ago..... so this is what I did to my bike. I took off the stock bullhorns and aerobars (which were too long) and installed Salsa Poco (short drop & reach) handlebars. Then I got Profile Carbon Stryke aerobars (adjustable!) and Ultegra short reach STI levers. And of course I removed the yellow decals (it's a Cervelo One) and put new tires on it, along with a new carbon seat post. I know it's a little weird, but for me it's the best of all worlds.........at least until I change my mind again. But it's so comfy. Here she is!!!
