Sorry for the delay. Here are the results of my goals for last week. I was a little short on my run time (less time than expected on my 1/2 mary - yeah). I was too sore to try to make it up on Sunday, but I did get a spin class in to make up my overall time. |

Veteran 271 Middle Tennessee | Subject: RE: jesswah's group - FULL of sexy triathletes! Now that I've completed the 1/2 mary, I need to determine how much running I need to do each week to keep my base for that activity up. I want to change my focus to swimming, but I want to be able to only have to increase my running for a week or two if I want to do another running event. Any suggestion would be helpful. Also, the Country Music 1/2 mary is in 2 month away. I had it in the back of my mind to do this if I finished the Frostbite ok. I looked and the entry fee is $90. Doesn't that seem pretty high for this type of event? I know the $20 price tag for the Frostbite was exceptionally low, but this seems to be at the other extreme. Even if I decide to swing it, is this event too soon? |

Doesn't that seem pretty high for this type of event? I know the $20 price tag for the Frostbite was exceptionally low, but this seems to be at the other extreme. Even if I decide to swing it, is this event too soon? I do not think that this event is too soon. You should definitely do it, if you want something on the radar to help keep you focused. Having a race to look forward to always helps me stay focused. I do think the $90 price tag is rather high. I will pay $20 anyday. I might pay $50 for a half that I really want to do, but I would probably skip the race, keep the $90 for a new pair of shoes and take a 13.1 mile run on my own. Certainly not as much fun, but I would be hesitant to cough up the dough. Now this is coming from someone that pays out a fair amount of many to race. This just does not seem worth it unless there is quite a goody bag, a meal after and some entertainment for you and your friends. As for the other part, you can focus on swimming and still maintain your running base. I will let the real runners here address this issue more fully, but I would think that you could have a swim focus and maintain your running base with some very specific training each week. I would try to do one short hard run (3 miles), one medium moderate run (5-6 miles) and then one longer run (8 miles) at your 1/2 mary race pace. I am not sure what your training looked like leading up to your race, but I would find some set schedule that worked for you while you focus on swimming. The distances I mention are arbitrary. I think frequency is just as important as distance in trying to maintain. So maybe take a week or two and take three runs but keep them short(er). Maybe DC and Jess can weigh in on this. |

Expert 844 | Subject: RE: jesswah's group - FULL of sexy triathletes! I think most of the race fees are crazy! Especially the longer ones. I only pick a few to do every year because of it and try to get away from home to a new area to do them so they are special.... |

Subject: RE: jesswah's group - FULL of sexy triathletes! PoleDance: I think gatjr nailed it on the head. 90 bucks is a rip-off for a half marathon. Even here on Long Island, where everything is very expensive, I've never seen a hald cost more than $50.00. 90 bucks for a Half Ironman, sure, but not a 1/2 marathon. Regarding running, again gatjr is giving you great advice. I too am trying to focus more on swimming while still maintaining my fave discipline - running. I would encourage more quality runs. I would just very slightly modify his advice. Here's what I would do. Eliminate all recovery runs. Replace recovery runs with swimming. Do one short tempo run; do one medium run with strides and lactate threshold (20m seconds slower pace than your tempo) and do one long run on a Saturday or Sunday. Start your long run with the first 2 to 3 miles at a comfortable warm-up pace, then gradually increase to your 1/2 marathon pace for 3 to 4 miles, then slow down and cool down with 2 to 3 miles of comfortable pace again. So basically first 1/3 comfortable warm-up, middle 1/3 marathon pace, last 1/3 to 1/4 cool down pace. If you are feeling really good that day, and it's a nice day due 1/4 warm-up, 1/2 MP, 1/4 cool down. If you are tired and sore then readjust, but somewhere in the middle of that long run you need and want to simulate the 1/2 marathon race and the only way to do that is to run your target pace - and that is the best way (according to Olympian Pfitzinger) to maintain your race day fitness. Take a day off after your long run, then the following day swim as a recovery, then spend a night on the trainer, then run your tempo run, then swim the next day as recovery, then take another day off or do a medium length run, then do a Long Run and Bike -> BRICK! |

Extreme Veteran 533 Vermont | Subject: RE: jesswah's group - FULL of sexy triathletes! I believe this is when most folks are posting their weekly goals and accomplishments from the prior week. I have taken another approach. I have not been posting weekly goals, but I have posted my February goals in my training log. You can see from my actual totals what I have accomplished during the month. When reviewing these monthly goals and updating my training log, I noticed that I had a slight typo. I stated 30,000 swimming yards, when in fact, I wanted to state 20,000 yards. I will be challenged to hit any of my stated goals for the month. Having said this, I had one of my best training weeks in a long time. Very encouraging! I plan to make every attempt to cut the gap between my actual training hours and my goals for the month. Best of luck to everyone training this week!! |

I am leaving for the nation's capital on Thursday and I have not slept yet since Saturday night. I am hoping to get a reasonable long run, swim, and ride in before I go and at least one run in down there. SO...6 miles today. 2700 yards in the pool tomorrow..and and 1:45 on the trainer Wed..... We shall see. I also eat like a death row inmate when I am with my kids. I weigh just a shade under 500 pounds right now. |

Heck, it starts getting up to 36 around here like it did yesterday and I am definitely thinking shorts. I even left the overcoat at home. The sun was beautiful and there was no wind to speak of. I enjoyed running the last two days. Ah, not to worry, the sun is gone and we are looking at getting 8 to 15 inches of snow tonight. It seemed like your comment came during story time and some of the stories were a bit more serious. Hey, keep up the humor. I for one can take some of this stuff rather seriously, but I really enjoy stepping back and laughing. After all, this is suppose to be fun. As for your HIM, you are correct. It is coming all too fast. Still seems like we have ample time to train, but it will be here before you know it. I am still trying to figure out where Feb. went. Two days left. How did that happen? Why do I think I am going to be sitting here in a few months going...Tupper Lake is next week...how did that happen??? Well, better get to work, as I have much to do. |
