Way to go Dan. Great performance, especially on the swim portion !!

BTW - MSU made my local newspaper this morning but not for the right reason. Something about a party that got out of control. Of course, nothing like that would ever happen at MY university ( )

Mav - your goal of qualifying for Boston is tremendous. Even though my entry was a "charity" one, I still felt like an Olympian as I made my way along that hallowed course and the emotion of making the final turn onto Boylston Street when you see the old-fashioned finish line banner is indescribable.

anyone who finishes that race is a winner!!!!! I just would like to qualify for a personal goal (not to mention having to pay the 3K fee...Yikes)

Didn't like the sweep by the bluejays at ALL! The boys are tired and need to come home. Opening day at Fenway tommorow. Wish i had tickets. I have ones in July for Yankee RedSox. Can't wait!!!!

Kudos to Bryan and Dan on great performances on your indoors this weekend! Nice job. Sounds like a fun deal - I'll have to look into whether they have any indoor tri's in my area.

Bryan, I can't report on my Sat swim because it didn't happen . Took the family to the grandparents house for the weekend and ended up leaving really early in the am. So...tomorrow I'm looking forward to the vessel lengthening drills. And thanks for the advice on the bike purchase process. My biggest question is the budget. Once I figure that out, it will be easier to decide. Also want to take some other bikes out for test rides.

I'm taking the family down to Moab this weeked, the kids have spring break. I love riding my mtb down there - so awesome! Here's a picture from a trip down to Arches National Park near Moab in October 2004 (wife and youngest).

Photobucket

It's so beautiful down there, and I need some sun! 65-75F sounds like heaven right now. Should be fun, although I won't get much swimming in. Mostly hiking, biking, and hopefully some running. Leaving Wed after school, returning home Monday - just so you don't worry when you don't hear from me . I'm excited, if you can't tell.

Keep sTRIving!

Wow, that's a great pic Leston! Have a great trip and enjoy the mountain biking, the warmth, etc.

Mav - what did you mean by the "3k fee"?

I was to the pool yesterday but didn't want to do too tough a workout since I was still a little stiff from my Sunday LSD. I tried really hard to focus on "lengthening the vessel", on good kicking technique (still not very good at this) and on bi-lateral breathing.

Looks like it's to be a fantastic day weather-wise with temp as high as 50F. I plan to run at lunch and may even be brave enough to flash my spindly white legs for all to see by wearing shorts instead of running tights. Yikes !!

Bryan, did the lengthening drills today in the pool. Counting my strokes regularly, I did 26. Pulled that down to 21 with the drill. It was good, very good for me. Something that I will work on every time I'm in the pool now. Also did 250 yards non-stop at the end of my workout. Felt good too. Thanks for the help and advice.

One thing I've noticed is that when I breathe on my left side I tend to sink. Don't know what I'm doing differently - when I breathe on the right side, I keep a pretty level position. Any ideas?

A little more explanation on my first Tri (I am not near as descriptive a Mav or Juanita, but I will do my best).

- Like Bryan, I stayed up late the night before watching the basketball games (unlike Bryan, I was watching them on TV and not in person!). We also went to dinner celebrating a friend's 50th birthday and then went to another bar celebrating another friends 40th birthday. I only had 1 diet budweiser the entire evening (that is a Bud Lite to some!). That was the hardest part of the entire thing, but at least my wife had a designated driver!

- My start time wasn't until 9:00 am so I didn't have to get up too early. I arrived at gym and checked in and I felt the entire thing was well organized and ran. I was impressed with Lifetime Fitness!

- I went to stretch out my calf muscles upstairs by the treadmills. I saw people running at 9.0, 9.5 and even one at 10.0! Right there I knew I didn't stand a chance of making the top 10!

- My calf was pretty loose, so I was comfortable.

- Went down to the swimming and we had 2 people in each lane. I was paired with a 20 something lady and was concerned that we would be swimming about equally, but luckily for both of us we did not! She only completed about 10 lengths so we never had the problem that Bryan had!!!!

- I never even kept count of the laps. My goal was to swim the entire 10 minutes without stopping and I accomplished that! When I was done and found out I completed 18 lengths - I was real happy!!!!!

- I took a quick shower, changed and went to the bike (we have 10 minutes for transition and it doesn't count for our time, so I had no rush!). Bike was uneventful and actually a bit boring. I There was no device to keep my cadence, so I was keeping an eye on other around me and I was upto or above most of them (at least I think!). I never really set a goal for the bike as I didn't know what to expect, so I just kept pedaling as fast as I could! As I was getting closer to the end, I was watching the odometer go over 12.0 and I was hoping to get to 12.8 but finished at 12.7 miles (I say this because when my distances were posted, they listed it as 12.1! I know I finished at 12.7, but am not making a big deal of it because it really doesn't matter!).

- I went to the locker room, took off my bike shorts, but on run shorts and went upstairs to treadmill (we had a 5 min transition time here). I started running at 6.5 as I was afraid of my calf issues. It was doing fine then about the 4 minute mark it started to tighten - no real pain, just tightening. At the 5 minute mark, I increased speed to 7.0. The tightness would come and go (I would say about a 4 on the pain scale). Every once in a while the pain would increase to a 5 or 6, but only for about 15 seconds, then would subside. I decided to keep running through it and it worked out fine! For the last 2 minutes, I increased the speed to 7.5 and finished with 2.30 miles.

- I was elated when finished. I was not exhausted in any way and felt I could have given more, but for now, I was satisfied. Since there was no real finishline, nor were there spectators cheering, I didn't feel excited or like I finished a race (I am not writing this a bad thing, just a matter of fact), however, I did feel satisfied (best word I can use to describe).

- After walking for about 5 minutes, I stretched, then went into the hot tub and went home for a nap!

I can't wait to do the next one! I really want to find another Tri before my big one in August. I would like for it to be an open water swim, but only about 500 M or so. I have look a little bit, but haven't found anything that works and is in my area. I will keep trying.

Thank you again, for all your help and support. Sorry if I was a little long winded, but I wanted to let you know how I felt during this event.

Here are the results of the race:

http://www.lifetimefitness.com/events/indoor-tri/race-results.cfm?i...

I finished 41st overall (but would have been 34th if the bike would have been accurate) and 12th in the over 40 male division (would have been 10th if bike was accurate).

Mav,

I have an offer for you and your husband! I have 4 tickets to the Tigers - Red Sox game on Thursday, May 8th. The seats are 2 rows behind the Tigers dugout. If you can make it to Detroit, my wife and I will treat you for dinner and the Tigers game (I am serious about this offer!). Let me know if there is anyway you can make it. My work email is [email protected].

I am hoping the Tigers will have one at least one game by then (this is pathetic!).

ps here is an article that was printed about my son's solar car project on the front page of the Lansing State Journal on 4-8-08 (an no, I don't have that much hair!).

One final post for now:

Pete - the MSU party explosion made our papers and nightly news here too! I know my son wasn't involved since he was home for one of his friends 21st birthday party so I was glad of that!

However, I do know the East Lansing Police use excessive tactics when dealing with large crouds at times. Not being there, I certainly don't know, but have seen 1st hand some of their over bearing nature which sometimes causes an OK situation to explode into nightly news. I am certainly not blaming them in this case or in all other cases and I know they are in a difficult position sometimes, but I am often skeptical when it comes to the East Lansing Police! Just an editorial note :^)

Not descriptive Dan? *cough cough* Actually, I found the description of your tri very detailed and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it! Wow, you did great! Are you sure you had a vacation recently? *grin* Good job!

I lengthened a little more today while swimming, Bryan, and shortened my stroke count to 25. I'm feeling more comfortable with the rotation, but it sure feels like I'm twisting a lot. And I'm with Leston... I can't even get my mouth above the water line to the left, lol, much less take a breath. Guess I'll continue to breath on the right side for now.

sTRIving on!

P.S. Hurray for Peter's warmer weather! Woohoo!

Dan - great performance at the indoor tri. You are SO ready for the outdoor season !! Apparently the Tigers aren't quite so ready ( ). Gosh, I remember the great Tigers-Jays rivalry in the mid to late 80's. One of my best friends from military college was from Windsor so a big Tigers fan and we used to love bantering back and forth.

Just back from my last swim class. Tonight there was only 2 of us again. I did 6 x 50's (2 pull, 2 one-arm and 2 kick) and then a 200m pyramid: 50-100-150-200-150-100-50.

Got home and chatted on the phone with my daughter who is away at university (1st year) and wrote her first final exam today and writes another tomorrow. She was really down because she didn't feel like she did well and is worried about the one tomorrow too. Poor kid feels the weight of the world on her shoulders because her scholarship requires that she maintain a 75% average for it to be renewed in subsequent years. Tried my best to tell her not to worry but she will anyway.

Saw my first road cyclist today as I was on the way home from work so it won't be long till I can get my new wheels out for a test drive.

BTW, I've decided on a name for my bike. I've been playing around with a number of concepts to try and find one that grabs me. Thought about something to do with its colour or maybe a Roman God, etc. etc. I've finally decided on (drum roll please)

Sebastian

Why you ask? Well, because St. Sebastian is the patron saint of athletes. You can read a more complete story at: http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=103but I liked in particular that

"He is patron saint of athletes because of his physical endurance and his energetic way of spreading and defending the Faith. Sebastian is also patron to all soldiers. He entered the Roman army under Emperor Carinus in 283 in order to defend the confessors and martyrs of his day without drawing attention to himself. His efforts kept the Faith of Marcus and Marcellian firm during their persecutions, right up to the time of their martyrdom. He was declared patron of plague sufferers of his reported cures of those afflicted with many diseases"

So - he is connected to athletes, the army and curing diseases - all things that resonate with me.

Cheers,

Pete

Dan - you were right there with me...cool....great job....it was a great event and I am glad you were able to do it....I looked at you club results and you did very well overall and in your division....you should be pumped....

Mav - Boston is $3000?????????????????

Leston....what a cool pic...a beautiful place for sure....keep up the good work

FBP - let those legs see the sun....go for it....you are one running dude....

Leston - you are probably lifting your head slightly vs. rotating when you go to the left vs. the right.  Have a friend or your wife stand at the end of the pool and watch your head.  It's angle should remain constant on both sides.  I would bet it doesn't.  ANY shift in your head "up" would force your legs down.  You might also be starting your next stroke sooner to "hold" yourself up.  Consider balance on that left breath.

Dan - your swim was awesome - 450 in 10 is about 1500 in 30 - a very respectable time.  Keep working on extending and do some 50s pushing the effort.  You will get faster with some interval work.  It is very similar to running.  In the future, on the bike you can check your cadence by counting the right knee up for 10 seconds and then multiply by 6.  So for a cadence of 90 you would want your right knee up 15 times in 10 seconds.  Hope that helps.  A couple of thoughts on your calf.  I would take some calcium as well as potassium.  I would also be sure I replace the electrolytes and salt I am losing and also I would be sure I drink lots of water.  You might not be hydrating well enough before you start a long workout.  Also, carefully stretch before you work out...after warmup stretch a little more.  I also use a foam roller and they work well too.

Flipper - be sure your rotation is the same on each side...getting your mouth above the waterline should be as much about the rotation of your core as well as your head.  Also, be sure your core goes evenly on both sides.  Belly button pointing at one side wall and then the other.  Go go go.....

FBP - what a great bike name...seems to fit perfectly.

By the way, you ALL rock.

Had another good lunchtime run and once again it was decent enough to wear shorts. My 6k route was a little different than usual and included a monster hill but of course once you go up you get to come down.

Mav - still wondering what your $3k comment was referring to.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

A great workout today.... an hour and a half ride.  Wow...great weather here right now....yeah I know Mav...it's going to get hot.  But tomorrow morning I am out for a long run and the temp is supposed to be about perfect.  I swam Friday night prior to going out to dinner with Debbie and it was a good swim.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend and a couple of great workouts....

I have created a Google calendar that I use for my race schedule and training stuff.  I can create another one for us to share.  All I need is your email to give you access if you would like to add your events, that way, one look at the month would show everyone's events....

let me know,

Great idea B-man. I think you have my email but if not I will pm to you. My events are the Fredericton Half Marathon on May 11 and the Duncan Hadley Sprint Tri on July 6th.

Just back from my Sunday LSD  - 16k again today. Plan is to do 18k next weekend and then start to back off the distances leading up to the HalfM. Also hoping to get out cycling later this week - yippee!!

Caught most of the Ford 70.3 championship on NBC yesterday afternoon. Wish they spent more time focusing on age-groupers but the lady they did concentrate on (I think her name was Vicky?) was quite an inspiration. Had lost 80 pounds and was dead last (or close to last) but had a smile the whole time.

Also liked that the intro sequence said something like, "We will strive, we will etc." Our group's motto appropriated by a major network ().

Mav - bet you're loving the story about a Sox jersey buried in the foundation of the new Yankee Stadium, eh? Those New Yorkers - always puttin' something into their stadiums. Last time it was Jimmy Hoffa in the Meadowlands . We Canadians are sneaky too - we buried a Canadian coin beneath centre ice in the Salt Lake arena before the Olympics and went on to win Gold in the Mens and Womens hockey.

I love the idea of a team calendar, Bryan! How cool is that?! Great idea! I've inserted my one and only scheduled invent into my signature, and my email address is:

I took the weekend off. I was feeling run down (probably over-training again - I don't know what gets into me, *sigh*) and I'm having numerous migraine headaches. The doctor says they are worse due to menopause, arggg. (I know you guys want to read about this, lol.) I guess this is something I'll have to live with for awhile. It seems like I'm drugging myself constantly, but I don't want to give up my triathlon dream so, if drugs help me work out, so be it. Anyway, hope to get back on track, albeit, with a little less distance, tomorrow.

Have an AWESOME week, all! (Hope to hear from you soon, Marianne. You are in my prayers.) sTRIve on!

To All My Fellow Turtles....
Round two biopsies were all negative!!!!!!! Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. Apparently they worked! I got called to go into Boston last friday for the biopsy. I was sick with the flu and I felt like @#*!. I feel fine now( I got the call several hours ago) and I don't have to go back for a year!!!!! SO ON WITH TRAINING!!!! I AM VERY BEHIND and I have a lot of races booked. I also need to catch up on all the posts.

Pete... I think we should compare legs... mine are pretty white too.
I love the name of your bike. Sebastian is a perfect fit for you.
The Yankees dug up Ortiz's shirt today(I saw it on the news). They actually jack hammered the floor and took it out of the locker room. They are going to auction it off with the proceeds going to charity. I couldn't believe it!!!!! Damn Yankees. Did you hear about the red tailed hawk that is nesting over Fenway? It apparently swooped down and grabbed a girl by the hair, her name was Alexis Rodriquez(A-Rod????) I am not kidding... this was on the front page of the Boston Globe. It happened last week. Can you tell we don't do much around here during baseball season? The Hawk dropped a rat on the crowd during the game with Toronto. It apparently got spooked by the cheering crowd and dropped the rat right into the bleachers. Pretty disgusting! But it makes a good news story.

As for the marathon..... A good friend of mine told me that there are a limited number of bibs for the race for those that don't qualify. The "donation" to get one of these is 3K....so you either run for charity, qualify, or pay a donation. I plan on qualifiying next year so it is a moot point!!!

Dan.... Your son's car was incredible. My son graduated from college last year with a degree in environmental science and is now working on getting his license as an electrician. He wants to do "green construction" specifically solar and geothermal. By the way, cheers for Detroit in game 2 ...the Red SOX were PATHETIC. I could hardly watch the game it was so bad.

Bryan.... It was 70 here over the weekend. I did go out and run (just 4 miles). The MD said it would be OK as all with the procedure went well. It is going to be close to 80 on Fri here. Believe it or not I am going to try and do an OWS with my wetsuit. My son said he would go with me. I will take pictures. Here's a question... oh wise one..... how cold is too cold, to do an OWS as long as one has a wetsuit on????? My season opener is May 11th (mothers day) and I need to get some practice before the race or I will look like an idiot!!!!!! I am also very ,No VERY concerned about my oly the first weekend in June. Do you think I'll be ready? I haven't even had a 20 mile ride yet this season???? That has me concerned. I know I can't overdo it or I'll mess up the whole season. I did 15 miles on the stationary bike today , but its not the same. My chest is too sore to ride for a long distance yet. If I can get in at least 4 long ride in the next 4 weeks do you think I can pull off completeing? I am not worried about the swim or the run. I know I won't be breaking any records but its important that I actually can do it. Or do you think I should just bag it and do one at the end of August when I know I can complete and do well? Or should I do both? Advice, words of wisdom, a few laughs???????

Juanita... Sorry to hear you aren't feeling great. I have learned well over the past month that getting old ain't for sissies!!!!!! I will say though as hard as it is some days, I always feel better after I workout. I actually am going to Masters swimming tonight. I don't plan on going fast but I am going to swim. Your Tri is fast approaching too....I am sure you will be great.

Leston, I hope you had a great trip to Utah. What spectacular pictures!

TO All... Sorry this was so long...I'm feeling good...so a little wordy today. Thank you all for all of your support
sTRIve ON!!!

Wow mav, that is the best possible news to start my day with. Could not be happier for you. Now, quit slackin' and get to trainin'

Glad you liked my bike's name. The more I think about it the more I like it. It looks like I'll be able to get out riding with Seb before week's end. Snow is almost all melted now - just a few heaps on the lawns from where we shovelled the driveway all winter.

Some other bike news - I got a set of nearly new Profile Design aerobars (the low end model that you add onto your road bike bars) - on ebay yesterday for $18. Turns out they were being sold by someone in Kelowna which is where my wife is currently visiting. So, the vendor is dropping them off to her today instead of me having to pay for shipping. Sweet. Once I'm comfortable on Seb I'll add them and see how I feel. For an investment of $18 I'm not too worried if they don't work out

I'm off later this afternoon to pick up my daughter at university. It's about a 3 1/2 hour drive from here. She wrote her last two (first year science) exams yesterday and so is packing up her residence room today. I shudder to think how full the van will be on the way home!

Mav - are you a hockey fan at all? Your Bruins are playing OK against the Montreal Canadians. Dan - are you a Red Wings fan? Bryan - surely you are cheering for the Dallas Stars. Leston - do you follow hockey? Juanita - do you even know what hockey is down in 'bama (just kidding ) Sadly, my favourite team, the Ottawa Senators are now on the brink of elimination at the hands of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Not ahuge surprise since they played poorly most of the second half of the season and they are without three key players due to injury.

Have a great day everyone. Juanita - hope you are feeling a little more chipper than you were on the weekend.

Mav,

I am truly excited for you and your family! This is the BEST news I have heard in a long time.
Congrats.

I am considering doing an "outdoor" Tri in June before my Chicago event (end of August). I have found 2 different ones using the same distance:

500M swim
20K bike
5K run

The swims are open water. I think it would be a good idea to get a real "Tri" in before August. Since my distances aren't too far I don't think they are too close together. Any thoughts?

Pete,

Yes I am a big Red Wings fan. I actually sat front row for the first game against Nashville. It was a shame what happened last night (giving up 2 goals in 9 seconds), but I think we should be able to move on from Nashville.

In general I am a big sports fan with my favorte sports being:

1. College Football

Please forgive me but I am going to hit 2 tonight and then follow up soon.  I apologize but tax day is today as you know and it has been a crazy few days at work.  None of you people keep your 1099s when we mail them.  Smile.

Dan - yes do an outside sprint before Chicago.  I think you will really enjoy it and it will be great practice.

Mav - what the hey....go for it.  You will be fine.  It will be tough but you are tougher.  I am really really pleased with your test results...that is fantastic.  Get on the bike a few times and take it easy on race day.  Work to keep that heart rate under control.  I would not OWS (open water swim) at anything below 60 degrees...and 65 is really cold in my humble opinion...even in a wesuit.  70 is pretty much my limit...and to me, that is COLD.  Be careful too, if your inner ear gets cold, you will experience dizziness.  In cold water, I highly advise silicone ear plugs to insulate the inner ears.  Be careful in cold water.  Don't swim too long.  Be sure someone is watching you or better yet kayaking with you.

Man - with advice like that you guys should be paying....LOL....

sTRIve on....more details on the calendar soon....

Dan...You are ready Go FOR IT! You did great on the indoor, you will be fine. Pacing yourself while the adrenaline from the race goes through you is the hard part. I always try to do the race route once before the actual race (I do it with road races as well) . Before the Danskin tri last year I would go do the bike route once a week because it had killer hills. This year I signed up for an olympic distance in NH and the race reports about the bike are scary. I am actually thinking about driving up next weekend to check out this bike route....I know I'm a little obsessive.I need to remember my goal is not to finish last and not to throw up...I think I'm going to add, NOT to walk my bike.

Peter...I'm not a hockey fan, just Red Sox. By the way, they won again last night. Unfortunately I had to work so I didn't get to watch. My brother lives in Ohio and he was there for both games so I am sure I will get a blow by blow description.

Bryan...You are definatley from the south. The ocean temps on Cape Cod ( some of Massachusetts finest beaches) are in the 60's in the heat of the summer! I convinced my son we should try the lake this Fri or Sat when the air temps are in the 70's. He is a crazy surfer and goes in the ocean around this time of year. He will go on his surfboard and pace me in the lake. Maybe I'll chicken out once my toes hit the water...we'll see.

Juanita...have you done an open water swim yet???

Funny story... my husband and I went out to dinner the other nite to celebrate the good test results. I was talking about not wanting to eat too much before I swam a mile (I had masters that evening) when the waitress approached. She asked "are you doing that triathlon in Webster?"She was refering to the Danskin. I told her I had done it last year and was planning to again this year. She went on to say how she really wanted to try it...after talking I gave her my number and I told her I would help her train I also gave her the BT website.Maybe I have converted another!!!!
