So....I am having a problem...ever since last Tuesday I have had this terrible pain in my elbows (both sides)  Tuesday was the first time recently that I have tried to do a swim and a ride in the same day.  I swam in the morning and then hopped on the trainer in the afternoon.  About half way through my ride I started having a lot of pain trying to bend my elbows.  The pain has continued since then and is exacerbated every time I ride my bike...it kind of feels muscular but I haven't been able to target which muscle it is exactly.  My husband looked at me on my bike yesterday (he has some experience with bikes, not a ton, but some) and said that it looked like everything was in good position...I am not sure if this is just a conditioning thing and I need to train my muscles to get used to the new hand position for the road bike, or if there is a problem with the fit of the bike.

It does sound like it's bike-related. Can't remember if you have aerobars on your bike?

No aerobars yet... as I said I am not sure if it is just because I am going from a more horizontal/pronated hand position on my mtb to a more vertical/supinated position on my roadie or if it really is a fit problem.  Or both

I made the same switch in September (mtb to road).  The first couple of rides my elbows hurt.  Felt like they were being slightly hyperextended.  When I took the bike in for adjusting he adjusted the stem so it was a couple of millimeters closer.  Made an amazing difference.  It might be worth it to take it in and talk to the techs.

I'm trying to wake up enough go for a run & swim today.  Coffee's not working yet.  Doesn't help that my son has been coming in 3 am for the past couple of nights saying it's time to get up.  Why can't he go around and wake up his dad instead?  Anyway this was followed by a cat laying at my head purring very loudly.

Today's' mantra "I will get it done. I will get it done....."

I like to have the Mtn Bike as an option for bike riding.  Unmaintained trails, wet roads, etc. seem a constant.  So...the Mtn Bike is a good option sometimes.

I need some training advice for a race I have coming up in March.  The format for my indoor tri is this.  15 min swim, 5 min transition, 15 min spin, 5 min transition, 15 min treadmill.  Winner overall and age group is determined by overall distance traveled. Am I wasting my time  (and energy race day) continuing to try to improve my swim times? Swim is by far my strongest event. I could swim 12-1400 meters in the 15 mins. if I take it out hard. My question is, is this the right thing to do? If I go out and say only do 800 easy to save my energy for the bike and run, is 15 mins on each of those enough time to make up the difference in distance.  Bike is prolly my weakest leg.  I need to do a lot of sprint work on my trainer over the next few weeks. I am not shooting for overall winner here, but I think I might have a shot at my age group if I do this right.  The field is limited to 70 people.  What do you all think?

When I first read this I thought "oh gosh, teenagers" and then realized that your son is just a little guy!   Hope you get caught up on your rest.

Some convential thoughts (JHouse4 is a better source though) -

"the swim is just the warm up for the bike and run"

"HR 150/160/170" - Swim/Bike/Run - from Gordo

"you can't win a tri during the swim (but you can lose it)"

Hope this puts some perspective on this....

Today was a what was I thinking? day.  I went in and did some weights and rode the bike for 45 minutes.  The problem was that the weights focused on legs & back and the ride was speed intervals.  Tough one.  I'm gonna look at it positively though.  It's good for me and it'll pay off in the long run.

It's kind of what I was thinking.  Get in, swim a decent swim leg without getting too tired, and try to kick a$$ on the bike and treadmill.  Watching what has been going on in the local pool, there isn't much competition in the pool.  There are some pretty strong bikers and runners though.  Undecided

Triathalon is notorious for our swimmers.  Usually notoriously bad (me included)

If it were me this is what i would do... Aim at trying to get between 1000 & 1200 yards/meters (if you can do it comfortably). The bike there is less that 1 min difference per MPH. I would suggest that you hammering the run that is where you are going to make up the most time. Just don't kill yourself on the swim. I have done it and was #1 on the swim but then next to last because I had nothing left for the bike or the run.

Off-topic question.  Feel free to respond with PM or email.

Looks like we're going to Chicago for a few days middle of May.  Since some of you are in that area I'm hoping you can help.  I'm asking for recommendations of things to do with a 4-yr old boy.  I lived in the area when I was in Junior High (many moons ago) and remember museums & planetariums & such.  But not sure what's still there or what will appeal to him.  He's very hands on.

For the same trip, any suggestions on places to run?  We'll be staying in downtown near the Hyatt Regency.  The hotel has exercise equipment but I'd love to get out some as well.

Thanks.

I'm not an expert but plan to spend some time at Millennium Park.  It is free!

It's hard to describe but impossible to forget once you've been there....we always plan to spend a few minutes there and end up spending hours.

OK on the workout front... When it gets closer, PM me and we can make some things happen. The Hyatt is really close to Ohio Street beach so you can open water swim.

Things you could do with a little one.

Lincoln Park Zoo (free all year round (check out the park and pond as well)) 3 miles north

Shedd Aquarium 2 Miles south

Millennium Park 3 blocks south

Navy Pier 4 blocks to the east (also have the childrens museum there as well)

Boat tours (best way to see Chicago on the water)

Oprah

Cubs Game

There is a million things to do... PM me before you leave.

I would say everything he said...but would add:

The Children's museum at Navy Pier is a must if he likes hands on stuff...It is amazing

Museum of Science and Industry: A little farther from where you are staying down in Hyde Park, but also great for hands on stuff

As a southsider I would have to say a White Sox game (although I too love Wrigley Field for the Historic aspect)

If you want do one of the Observation decks I would vote for the John Hancock over the Sears Tower...I just think the view is better

And as Joe said if you want to PM as the trip gets closer I am happy to give more concrete suggestions.

What they said.  Chicago is prolly my number one favorite travel destination (for a large city).  Love those places.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I knew it'd help to ask.

I'm hoping we like Chicago too.  We went to NYC last year without the kid and loved it.  It would've been great to live there when we were younger.  There's just so much to do.  But right we enjoy the relaxed life in a small town.  No Interstate, no traffic, beautiful surroundings and delicious apples.

Today's agenda:  We're talking about going snowshoeing.  May not get far but we're gonna try.  I'll probably do a run afterwards.

Have a good day!

Thanks for the opinion.  It was kind of what I was thinking. I should be able to swim the 1000 meters in that time w/o much effort.  Then spin on the bike.  I'll keep working on getting my run interval in line for this race.
