WOW!!! My favorite thing... bike porn!  What a raffle prize!  Thanks JG... maybe I'll sponsor Jeff in the race so he can win it for me Laughing!  or maybe a bike share program... swap month to month

Way to get that race on the schedule for the 27th... I have never done a TT swim start for open water... I had a pool swim that way once, much nicer than the mass start, but in the pool - if not seeded properly, the passing or getting passed is more of a pain in the tight swim lanes.

No big weekend plans here ~ early AM run on Saturday, maybe an evening ride if time/family permits.  Tossing around the idea of an OWS on Sunday morning with a group...more of a social thing than a training thing...  I would say that I am heading into a taper next week... but I really haven't been training hard enough for a taper, and I am will pay for that on the 28th.  Albeit, I will still enjoy myself and embrace the pain! Smile

dangremond - 2009-06-18 11:23 AM Any one else racing this weekend?  What are everyone's plans for the weekend?

My wife took her Board certification test yesterday, so after spending the last four months doing Daddy-Day Care on the weekends so that she can prepare, I'm taking the entire family out of town for the weekend.  Leaving around noon tomorrow and will come back into Houston Sun. evening.  The kids have missed their Mom, so it will be nice to spend time together.

I'm going to try to fit in a couple of runs over the next several days, but that will be about it.

Next week, I'm planning to get back at it.  And will finally have time on the weekends to do some long rides or some OWS with Justin and his gang.

Good luck to those of you racing this weekend.  Justin - not sure when you head up to Lubbock, but best of luck.  Can't wait to hear how it goes!

Well, I'm thinking about doing the Green River Challenge bike tour, probably the 38 mile option (unless I'm just feeling unbelievably great, and then I might consider the 65 mile route).

Looks like quite a few of us have races this weekend or next - good luck to all!!

Hi all.

After a week off from the sprint at the coach's direction, I got back on the bike and did 90 plus at a cancer fundraiser.  It was set up in three 22 mile loops from the main food station.  (My great idea, I'll take credit now that I know everybody loved the format.)  I rode out to the lake, helped set up and then did my workout on the first loop and then charged through the other two and home.  Had a blast.  Rode 60 plus on Sunday.  I raced in the Tuesday time trials and nearly pr'd on a windy night with shifter troubles - could only stay in the big ring.  20.75 mph for 12.5 miles.  Not the fastest in the bunch but I moved back from 4th starter to 11th starter since I started going.  That feels good for an old man - flying by the younger ones.  So, yes, I do have an ego after all.

I also rode through the week, ran, swam twice with the masters including a 2000 continuous.  Today was a rest day.  Tomorrow starts the cycle again, tempo drill, VO2 drills and a brick. WooHoo!

Good to be back and have something to talk about.

Sorry about your injury.  Word from experience - don't press too early.  In the long run, you only slow yourself down.

Have a great weekend!

Well, a bit of a tough day today on the race course.  My time this year for the Big Fish Sprint Tri was 1:19:12, an improvement over last year's time of 1:19:46.  I was hoping for something around 1:15.  They don't have the splits up yet and I forgot to hit the lap button going into T2 so I'm not really sure how I did on each leg.  Swim was a bit better than last year and I think the bike and run were similar to last year..the run may have in fact been a bit slower.  I felt tired on the run and didn't feel like I could hammer like I would have liked.  Also woke up this morning very dizzy.  It pretty much went away by race time, but not sure what that was all about.  I'll post a race report once all the splits are posted.

I hope everyone else who is racing this weekend had a good time and to all the Dads, Happy Father's Day!

Well Mitch, don't know about you, but the heat and humidity of late have really affected me, so that could be part of it - but regardless, good job on the race!

I took part in a local bicycle tour/race, part of the Morgantown Catfish Festival .  I took 2nd in the 38 mile race, but I've got to qualify that: all the "icemanscott-types" chose the 67 mile option.  It was a brutal route, more climbing than I've ever done, highest speed ever attained, longest distance (by 5 miles)  . . . but the heat and humidity were downright miserable.

And I ran out of water with 10 miles to go . . . .

Brutal - but hopefully good conditioning for the Old Hickory Lake Triathlon in Nashville this weekend.

And thanks Terps for the Father's Day wishes!  It's the best job I could ever have!

Great job Jeff and Mitch on your races!  Wow, Jeff you are really strong on that bike now!  And Mitch, your swim training must have paid off and felt good to implement!

I do find that the heat and humidity really get to me now.  My heart rate climbs more when I run in those conditions.  10 years ago, I could run 10 miles in July at noon without a problem.

Were do I start?  Well I finished and I had a great time.  Woke up later then I would have liked but the wife and boys were with me too.  My swim was horrible, finished last but I knew that was going to be my worst event.  It gets better.  So the first half of the bike was ok. I was not expecting the hills.  I live were it is flat so on the way back was tough.  Had to hop off the last hill and walk a little.  This is the good part.  Almost to the top I decide to hop on.  I put my left foot in and push off, can not get my right foot in so on fall over like a dam tree in the middle of the road. I started laughing cut my elbow and scuffed up the bike a little.  Not a big deal. So I finsih the bike on a good note. Then on to the run, legs felt like jello.  So I am almost to the finish line when I follow a runner ahead of me who went the down the out portion of the run and not to the finish line.  After realizing i was going the wrong way I took out a barrier with rope on it trying to get back in the right direction and I started laughing again. I had fun though except for my left calf crammping out of the swim.  My boys had fun and when he got home my oldest who is almost
6, set up a race course and wanted to race.  He had made the a finish line and everything. To me that was more inspiring then anything.  I will be back for more.  Have one in August to get ready for.

Now that's a terrific story - you need to create a race report for everyone to see (and get some inspiration)!

Great job pushing through the obstacles and finishing!

Great job pushing through the hard times.  I love that you were able to laugh.  It is the strongest weapon to fight off worry and just get it done.  Also, I love the fact your son is already picking up on how much fun you were having.  Nice job!

Mitch, Jon and Jeff... it was great to read all of y'alls accounts on your events.  Everyone did very well and it's key to focus on the good times, the laughs and where you improved when looking back.  All too often we get caught up on the could'ves and would'ves or should'ves.  Great stories about your races...it's nice to know that we are all alike in little ways... the human factor ~ makes life worth experiencing to the fullest!

Scott - you can flat out crush the bike, man that is impressive.  Would you like to come down to Lubbock, Texas this Sunday and knock out a fast 56miler for me?  lol!  Old guys rule!  I love running past the younger, leaner, guys that kinda have a cocky air about them.  Cardio and anarobic fitness plays a role... but the older we get the bigger our heart (desire)... the one thing that is often overlooked in youthful enthusiasm.

I live in Houston "HOT A$$" Texas, and I HATE the heat, when it comes to running (& biking I guess)... I slow significantly and my HR jumps up as the temp rises... sucks!

I did see one of the neater things during the bike portion yesterday.  1/4 into the bike I here someone coming up behind me.  Young kid (early 20's) passes me...road bike with aero bars (he's not using them though), wearing orange running shoes on platform pedals.  Kid could hammer up the hills, lost a bit on the flats.  I caught him once but couldn't hang with him.  Word is, once he got to T2 he was gone like the wind...great runner.  He didn't even look like he was really working on the bike, another guy said his seat was also way too low, knees up to his chest while pedaling.

Holy sheeite!  It's forecasted to be 97 degrees at my race on Saturday.  And damn Tennesse and their central time zone.  They'll start an hour later (hotter) than a race would due north of them here in Central Kentucky.

I'm betting the over/under on weightloss post-race to be 4 pounds.

Jon, Jeff and Mitch - congrats on your races.  Jon - loved the fact that your son was setting up finish lines at your house.  Shows what kind of impact these things have on our young ones.
As Jeff pointed out, I have yet to race and don't have much on the horizon.  Long story as to why, primarily family commitments, but that should be changing.  Looking at a couple of races in July and August.  I need to participate in the ADA's Tour de Cure in Houston in Sept.  And, closing the year with a HIM in Nov.  I'll get a draft schedule up on my logs within the next couple of days.

One other item I wanted to share with you all.  I know that I've expressed frustration, as has Grace and others, regarding weight loss and fitness.  Scott does a great job on reminding us of what a healthy perspective should be.  Here are two pictures that I'm keeping handy to remind me of the "big picture".  The first is from last year at my heaviest, the second is from this last weekend.

But, more important than just the visual - I had a Doc visit on friday morning - blood pressure, blood values, etc. all back within their normal ranges.

So, like Mitch has said - doing this is not Easy.  But, by the same token, not doing it is not an option.

(edit: not sure if the pics are visible or not; when I edit, I can see them, but when posted they are not.  So, added them to an album.)

J.G., you are doing great!  Those pictures say it all.  I read something someone posted on Face Book.  Paraphrasing, it said we spend too much time looking ahead at the ground left to plow without taking time to look back at the straight rows of turned rich dirt that we've already done.  Look back now and then. Rather than only thinking about how far we have to go, we need to look back once in a while and see how far we've come.  We've come far.

We had the weekly time trial last night.  12.5 miles of hotter than hell asphalt.  I averaged over 20 mph again, but can't break 21.  Last night, I was huffing the first long stretch that has rolling hills.  Couldn't stay arrow.  Unofficially, I was over my best time by about 30 seconds.  But my power readings were at 100 percent for the entire 36-min effort.  I felt great about that.  Heart rate curve was straight as could be.  On the other hand, my coach, who is in his early 50s, kicked butt again.  He set another course record and beat the young guys by plenty.  He is getting ready for the nationals in Nashville at the end of July.

On Sunday, he had me join a group ride with other guys he coaches.  We rode 60 hard miles at 19 mph with a incredible climb at the end, steep and long.  It rained, I was soaked but happy to make it to the top.  My coach was already at the top.  As I made the last turn on the final switchback and headed up the last steep grade to the finish, there he was calling my name, urging me on, smiling and congratulating me as I made it.  I damn well love moments like that.  My watt output was 500 for the climb.

I just signed up for a 5 mile foot race on the Fourth of July.  Trying to run 3 times 30- to 75 mins.   Hotter than hell here.  95 plus last three days. Helping with weight loss, but crap!  Hard on the old boy.

I'm trying to swim at least 1200 - 1500 yards continuous twice a week.

Hope all is well with you.  Stay hydrated.  Stay focused.  Stay cool.

Jota ~ beautiful family brother & kudos on the weightloss success.  Yes! It is not easy, but you seem to be keeping it in perspective and moving forward.  Just remember, we don't gain weight overnight, and thus we will not lose it overnight either... it just takes time and perseverance.

This is not Tri related (and a rather somber topic) ~ but it is something I hold very near to me & I would like to share.  I am a Sergeant with the Houston Police Department, and I have been with the Dept for 14 years.  Last night we lost another hero in the line of duty (shot by a suspect).  A 16yr veteran who left behind a wife, a 15yr old son and 17yr old daughter.  Please say a prayer or keep in your thoughts this officer's family during this trying and tragic time.

Thank you!

Second, my extreme thanks for serving the City of Houston given the inherent risks that come with serving.  Stay safe out there!

Hey guys, my condolences for your loss.  Policeman, firemen, and military men and women are heroes everyday and do not get the credit the deserve.

I have not fallen off the face of the earth just been REALLY busy with work and family.  I have been doing more working out rather than training and I am going to ramp up the training for my first tri on the 18th.  I would say see you during the race Scot but you are going to be so far ahead of me I'll just say see you after the race lol.  The 95 degree heat is a killer on motivation to actually go out and run.  I need to get motivated and am having a hard time...oh well, just do it right!!

Time to bear down and walk the walk...
