Thanks for the ideas and words of encouragement!  I thought it seemed like long distances; the last time I did Masters I think the max was 4000.  These guys are hard core swimmers, with a few iron(wo)men tucked in for good measure.  I'll talk to the coach a little more directly about it.  I figure at this point any swimming is good .

I tried looking for "Leg cramp + research + swimming" and various combos on Google...NOTHING! Ugh!  You'll get the same old, same old response-hyrdate, stretch, watch your electrolytes.  I think people underestimate how much you need to learn to relax in the water.  Perhaps you are forcing your calf muscles to shorten when you point your toe and doing that for prolonged times is causing the problem.  Try to work on kicking from your hip and keeping the rest of your leg relaxed (the foot "snaps" rather than forcibly kicks at the water).

Here's a swimming question for the group.  I have swum several times now with the Master's group, and after the disastrous cramp-fest of two weeks ago, I realize that I can't even attempt to keep up with the slowest of the group or I risk bodily injury.  Typically the workout is 5000ish yards in 1.5 hours.  My strategy yesterday was to do about 1/2 of the distance for each set- so the warmup was 1x400 swim, 1x400 pull, and 1x400 IM drill, so I did 1x200 of each (and skipped the fly).  I stopped when I started feeling pre-crampy (about 1800 yards in), and just swam during some of the kicking drills (coach's recommendation).  Does that sound like the best way to build, or should I just do the whole workout and stop when I get tired?  I want to get faster and stronger so I can do the whole workout eventually, but it's clear that I won't be able to do that terribly quickly.  Any thoughts?

And somebody please just reassure me once again that I will eventually get faster if I keep at it!

Thanks for posting the list!  I'll have to look for tomorrow's too.

You can't discuss a zebra print speedo without pictures...

Wow that's a tough workout.  I think it takes time to be able to swim that distance in practice or race.  Just swimming with them will build your speed and endurance.  I personally would ask the coach how you can break-up the sets since your can't swim the whole distance yet.  He will probably be able to modify the workouts to maximize your effort.

You're definitely right that 5,000 yards is hardcore.  I think the MOST I've swum since training for a HIM has been just over 3,000 yards.  You need a base to build speed on and you need good technique to build a good base.  SO, if something is goofy with your stroke then the coach should be able to catch it.  It sounds like you aren't getting enough drill work, kicking or pulling.  I think if you push yourself to stick it out just for distance sake then your technique is ultimately going to not improve.

Now that I think of it, I think you'd be better off sticking at working on distances from 50y - 500 y.  From what I remember, you're sticking to sprints.  SO, the longest swim you'll have would be about 700-900 yards (36 lengths of the pool).  In this case, I'd top off at about 2,000 yards on a long day.

I think triathlons have desensitized me from any type of shame that I think would wear them if I had to get a swim workout in.

I was running with some people last week, and was just about to strip down to my underwear to change my clothes, but had to stop because this group might find it odd.  (see people changing all the time at tri training, but never with running groups)

WittyCityGirl - 2009-06-15 3:57 PM Just don't wear them with a zebra stripe speedo!  They're real handy if you can get past the aesthetics!

RobbyN210 - 2009-06-15 2:43 PM Saw those "alien" gogglesSmile you guys were talking about at Sport's authority yesterdayand picked them up.

I'll try them on tomorrow's OWS I have.

Exchanging water bottles at water stops at a bike water stop.

-Do you just discard a water bottle on the ground right before a water stop then grab another one from a volunteer?  (note:  I don't have one of those aero bar water bottles, just two cages on my bike

Robert - Now, now, don't make us have to put up a collection plate to bail you out of jail for indecent exposure. =)

I asked rstocks (local triathlete from my area, I HIGHLY (highly, highly) recommend looking at his profile/blogs/ect, very candid and VERY helpful first-hand experiences) about the bottle exchange.
He said:

"About the water stops, there is a drop zone to discard your old bottle then just grab a new one. I do this at speed but would recommend that people slow down or stop if they are not used to the exchange on the fly"

Hey guys, I found this pretty cool website the other day.

www.swimplan.com

You sign up for free (it's sponsored by ads and I haven't seen a catch so far) and then enter some recent times for your swims.  It then uses that info to calculate workouts for you.  You can also tell it to include workouts using specific items (pull buoys, fins, etc).  It seems cool.  I haven't used a workout yet, but plan to soon.

i'm back.  things have been a little hectic this month; i went on vacation on the 3rd and managed to either swim in the pacific (oh sooo warm) or the pool (oh so warm again ...) and used the hotel fitness club almost daily so, i feel like i kept up the training.  i returned and found that i had lost my job.  boohoo.  i took a week or so off from training to lick my wounds and have a pitty party and now i'm pretty much back into it although i admit it is really an effort given that i'm learning to restructure my day.  funny how everyone has a to-do list for the one who isn't working.  this is my 2nd lay-off in 1.5 yrs and it frankly sucks but for the fact that it opens new doors to me and for that i am truley grateful.  thanks to all for the inspires - i feel much love Laughing.

here's a chuckle - i was signed up as an employee team member to run in the jp morgan corp challenge set for this thursday along with 12k other corp types; my colleague steve won't run it w/o me.  i figure it's more training for me so why not?  so i have to wear (with pride) a t-shirt naming the org that just let me go; say it with me now - a very small price to pay for more training...Wink

So I tried the googles right out of the box on a 1.2 mile open water swim, and it was a disaster. First I failed to tighten it properly and I had the swim cap an goggles overlapping.  All of this caused A LOT of water to leak in.

The next day I tried both the old and new goggles in the pool, and I could see the HUGE difference in sighting with the Aqua Sphere goggles.  Once I got the new goggles tightened properly, I had no problems with it.  I'll test them once more in the open water on Tuesday.

Thanks for the suggestion, think I am going to love them!

Cindy, sorry to hear about the job loss, but you seem to be taking it well.  Here's to finding a new one soon!

Robby, hope those goggles work out for ya.  I'd feel bad talking them up and then not having them work.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads!!!

I wouldn't be here (literally, in this sport) if it weren't for my own dad. Although he's not with me now I get STOKED at each race thinking about how he taught me to race as if it were my last. =

Robert - I hear ya. I have MAJOR leakage during OWS because I'll pull my goggles up during our breaks.  Good luck getting them to a point where they fit.  The siting ability does make a HUGE difference... with that said... I think I personally "scrunch" my face when I exhale out of my nose which doesn't help with the leaking problem.  So, other than adjusting your goggles, keep in mind how your face moves in the water. I think I end up breaking the seal each time I exhale. =(

Tim - Yeah great call on those goggles, it was my own fault for not testing them out before a long open water swim.  I tried it today on a pool swim and I think I got them setup correctly now :-)

Hey Sara - That was my problem too, I was scrunching up my face  causing it to break the seal, now I think I have it setup up so I can make any funny facesTongue out while I am swimming without messing it up.

Betsy-I use Nashbar's Martel sunglasses.  I like 'em! =)  Nashbar has a whole bunch of styles, so I'd look there first if you don't have anywhere else in mind. I think I paid $35 for them (LOTS go for over $100).

Okay folks!!!

I've been playing nicey-nice with you all in your inspires.  Anyone need a little tougher love?  Just putting it out there... =)

So, let's see about a competition.  Someone mentioned a tri challenge.  I wonder if WE could challenge another mentor GROUP???  So, by the end of June (not too far from now)  we could see who has the fastest average for males & females in swim/bike/run for the month.

Thoughts?

p.s. I nominate Betsy0706 & RobbyN210 for being the group Studs of the Week (slash month) because of their good efforts in training.  When I was a collegiate swimmer, nothing felt better than to have my coach call me a stud.  It meant that I worked hard physically and mentally no matter what the outcome was.  Let's see who else jumps up to the plate!  (I know we're all giving our best here, so I'll be looking for the next male and female Stud!)

Yeah Betsy and Robby have really been kicking butt this month!  Way to go guys!

And I am always up for a competition.  So would we each have to do some sort of "time trial" in each sport and then avg those all together?
