D001 - 2009-04-24 7:13 AM Dear Mentor Group, Thanks to you, I'm out a substantial amount of money. LOL! I found a "real running shoe store" that's a little over an hour from here (each way). I drove up there, had a nice conversation, and plunked down money for a pair of shoes. They aren't pretty, but hey, if they work, it's money well-spent.

Goodie!!! Hope they did all the right things and found the purrfect shoes to supporty your running!!!

I tend to find the pretty shoes are NEVER the ones that fit yuo best... although i havent done too badly... my current ones are blue/silver/white... much nicer than the ones before that... the person that picked a fluro and maroon colour scheme CLEARLY was colour blind.

peach5757 - 2009-04-23 1:49 PM Any thoughts on whether it's a good idea to take a spinning class (I like them because I feel like I get energized by the music, etc) on a bike day rather than riding outside?

The year I had my best bike splits was the year I did spin class twice a week.  It's a great workout, and helped me build my strength.

Nothing will ever replace riding outside and getting the bike-handling skills or the endurance needed for longer rides, but for your shorter rides it's a great replacement.

I wish I had access to a spin class I could work into my schedule.

Im trying to find a way to fit another regular spin class into my schedule too at the moment!

Its not a substitute for riding your own bike but if you enjoy it and it means you will get a workout without taking away from something that would be more beneficial then I say go for it..

It will help with leg strength and general fitness... plus if you are someone that tends to skip workouts but yuo enjoy these ones then its a HUGE benefit!

Subject: RE: The ankle improvements/hesitation

JoeBWan - 2009-04-23 10:54 PM OK, so away from the whoopie pies and back to training.  I wanted to ask about experiences with ankle sprains.  My ankle had pretty much returned to normal as far as pain goes, but now I'm feeling a sort of creepy "clicking" near the rear when I move it in certain ways.

Can someone clarify for me what's going on down there?  Are my tendons overstretched and I have to wait for them to return to their normal length?  If that's true, I would think my chance of re-injury would be pretty high during this waiting period.  Or are the tendons NOT going to return to normal length and I have to strengthen the supporting muscles to compensate?

Or am I wrong altogether and that's not what is going on?

I looked up ankle sprain several times on the internet and everything indicates that there are two types of sprain - stretched ligaments and  torn ligaments.  The problem is that the doctor didn't tell me which it was that I did.  I have to assume that if I TORE the ligaments, it would have been pretty obvious and I would have been told.  Is that correct?

I found a bunch of good exercises to help strengthen my ankle muscles, but none address these questions.

Thanks, everyone!

I would say stop checking the internet so much for starters

If your ankle is feeling ok dont worry about the clicking too much.. Mine does that... bit of loose cartiledge and stuff in my case... but on the flip side ankles just do that - it should settle down but may happen from time to time.

The biggest concern now would be lateral (I think thats the right term) rotation of that ankle until it finishes completely healing... basically you dont want to go for a run on a trail, roll it awkwardly and then put yourself out for another week... or longer...

So you want to find ways of working out where this is unlikely to happen for a little bit. So try to avoid erally uneven surfaces for example. In terms of strengthening thre are lots of little exercises that are recommended to strengthen your feet and ankles... like picking up a towell with your toes and alphabet with your feet...

Moving on things like just balancing one a wobble board at the gym forcing your ankle to stabilise then moving one to two legged and then one legged squats (do these on the ground without the board to start with) on the board may help. Basically anything that is in a safe controlled environment that will get your ankle to stabilise will strengthen it.

Initially just one set of these exercises may be of most help. You need to be aware that rushing this will not be such a good thing so just take your time and consider this stuff a long term supplementation to your routine. Add it to you normal workouts such as a current strength workout or core workout.

Also dont forget to stretch! Your body will naturally change the way it moves for a little to allow for your ankle which means some of your other muscles etc will get used in ways they are not accustomed to. So its really important to keep everything else in good working order as one injury can cause another etc etc etc if you arent sensible!

Finally watch your fatigue... if the lower legs are tired or you are mentally tired you are more likely to do something clumsy that will aggravate your ankle which right now will be a little more sensitive to the stumbles etc that can just happen sometime. Making sure you arent doing anything thats really demanding on the ankle when you are overly fatigued will help avoid this stuff!

I hope this helps a little!!!! Did the doc recommend any strengthening exercises? Or was it not a severe enough sprain to worry too much>?

Well, the first guy I spoke to looked at my shoes, and said, "What's wrong with those?" I explained about my ankles and knees. So he called someone else over.

The second guy had me walk back and forth a few times, then recommended two different shoes. He actually preferred the other ones on me, but they were less comfortable than the boats pair I ended up getting.

Hm. I think mine are white with some blue and silver, too.

First, I walked with just socks. Then I walked with my current shoes. That's when the first guy said they were fine, and then called over the second guy.

The second guy had me walk again with just socks. He picked up my current shoe, put it back down, brought out 2 pairs and had me walk in those..... He said either would work for me.

Just remember to break them in slowly... not as in the shoes need breaking in but your legs and ankles and stuff might take a couple of workouts to get used to the new support..

Good running shoes are well worth the money. They can really make a difference.
Enjoy them, I hope they make your legs and feet feel groovy!

I would possibly use the old shoes for that... if you are more comfortable running in them... there is that whole nothing new on race day thing!

I have a few things Im going to try and do this weekend:

1 - Tweak my training plan

2 - Write out some kind of nutrition plan so that I have something a bit more structured to work towards to see if I can get my weight shifting again

3 - Go back and start to work through some of the questions I havent covered off yet in our mentor group such as training for transitions, race day requirements and group/solo training

4 - SLEEP

5 - Ride my bike, run and swim!

TGIF Folks!!!

I just signed up for my first race of the season.  I'm going to do a Du with the hubby May 25th in Hot Springs, AR.  Secured the childcare and all  Now I need to work a few bricks into the equation before then.  Also, we are going to Cancun the first week of May, so I can't let vacation totally derail my training.

I also just bought tickets to Disney on Ice for this Sunday.

OK, I'm broke for the weekend.   What is everyone else up to???

I have a pretty busy weekend planned:

1.  Spring game at the University of Washington - 0-12 last year, but with a new coach and young player's there is some excitement in the air...  I also have season tickets, so I need to get my money's worth!

2.  Go bike shopping - one of the LBS' is having their first sale in over 70 years, so I'll go and check it out (up to 40% off of Trek, Specialized, and Gary Fischer )

3.  My best friend's second son is being baptized on Sunday.

4.  Physical Therapy exercises/stretches, long stationary bike ride (unless I buy one), and maybe get into the pool in preparation for the guys vs girls swim challenge in May.

ETA:

5.  Get caught up on the mentor group - I know I owe some replies to, as well as giving some, inspires.

SPECIALIZED!!! Ive never owned one... but the LOOK of them is always enough to get me interested... Ive never come across a good LBS that stocks them... I suspect one day I will own one... in my stable

As far as the mentor group goes... thanks to everyone for getting into the spiirt of this and offering everyone support and inspires etc. I know not everyone had time everyday to check in or offer replies but I know everyone has made an effort and so thank you... I hope everyone is getting what they wanted out of the group so far. If there is anything else you would like from this experience please let me know!

Good for you for going for a ride when you felt sick, did you feel any better after? I hope you will soon.

I've done my bike and swim, I usually work out late in the day, now out to the garden for several hours to spread 2 cubic yards of mulch we had delivered this morning.

Yay for everyone working out this weekend!

I'm working today. Bleh.

But at least it's from home.

However, there are some kids playing in their parents' car, and they keep honking the horn. And honking the horn, and....

I should probably go out there to exercise my lungs and YELL at them. (Actually, I'll just yell at their parents. I assume the parents are home, because the kids are about 3 or 4 yrs old...)

I don't care if kids play. But this has been going on for HOURS now....

It started around 10 AM, and it's now 2:45 PM. And every few seconds, I hear honkkkkkkkkkk, honkkkkkkkkkkkk, honkkkkkkkkk. Then the kids jump out the car, laugh their heads off, run around the car to switch places, and do it all over again.

I hate kids parents.

Eh. Gotta focus. Back to work.... Do a workout for me, ok?
