Recovery is key... I have just been drinking a protein shake after each of the workouts as a "snack". I believe the Beachbody stuff that they market in the DVDs has creatine in it... which I have been very hesitant on taking.

If I am really sore, I will kick back some OJ or something else w/ anti oxidants, otherwise its typically my AM pbj after the workout.  Started up 2nd go around after 3 weeks off and the first week stunk a bit w/ some soreness but feeling much better this week.

Thought I would sticky this thread for you guys since it seems to be popular. My wife is a triathlete and also likes P90X so this program seems popular among the tri crowd. I'm a maverick and like to do my own thing.

The Beachbody recovery drink does have a LITTLE creatine in it, but I think the amount is so minimal as to be somewhat useless. That said, I've never used creatine (outside of the BB Recovery Drink, which I do use and LOVE), so I don't really know for sure. I should probably look into this a bit more myself!

I find that by the 3rd week in each phase, I feel much less sore, as you adjust to the Phase. Then of course, you enter a new phase and are nearly debilitated once again!

Re: working P90X (or any strength training) into longer distance tri training - my take is that it's good to work on strength in the off season for a variety of reasons. For me personally, I happen to really love strength training so it's something I find fun to mix in. And, I'll freely admit that I'm a bit vain, and I like what strength training does for me aesthetically. Once swimbikerun gets more intense though, or I feel stressed about fitting it all in, the strength work is the first to go. I'll then usually pare down to just using something like Core Synergistics. That workout hits all the important bits in a pretty efficient manner, but doesn't leave you so sore you can't effectively complete your tri training.

BTW, everyone should feel free to ping me if you have questions about the X or other BB "stuff" - I'm happy to help!!!!

This is the last week in Phase 1-Lean for me. Recovery week next week. I am definately getting stronger and not as sore day-in-day out.

I am doing the program with my wife and would love to do the classic as I know I could do it. The wifey would struggle. The plyo is just too rough on her bad knee. Plus I feel that I am missing lifting chest... It feels like I am totally forgetting a muscle group. I know that all changes in Phase 2, but still.

I need to figure out how to keep the lifting in place during the season. Cardio will be all bike riding as I am committed to a couple different century and century+ charity rides.

Thanks for this advice.  I wish I would have purchased P90x earlier when I was in the 'OFF" season. Starting P90x with my IM program was a little intense. I've gotten down to a couple workouts a week b/c I'm just too sore tired to complete my s/b/r otherwise. I do really like the videos though! I def can see strength results!

Yeah, as much as I like Core Syn and think it would be cool to do more often, I've always felt that the Lean rotation was a last minute toss together to try to appeal more women, who'd otherwise be scared off of the program. Is her knee still bothered if she follows Pam in PlyoX? No impact, but still would be a good workout. Or, alternatively, she could do CardioX instead of PlyoX if that's simply too much for her?

It'll still be there when you are done with IM training. Just work it in when you can, and don't feel guilty about it! Gotta adjust to fit your schedule and goals.

Another approach that might work is to do "halfies" - the strength workouts are structured so that it's trivial to do 1/2 the workout without missing a muscle group. You are simply doing 1/2 the reps. That might take the edge off enough for you.

Which workout do you need weights?  I have the iron gym, a workout matt, the dvd's, I think I'm just missing the weights.  Was going to start day 1 tomorrow....unless I need the wieghts.

Day 1 is chest & back, which is mainly push-ups & the pull-up bar.  I remember maybe two exercises that use weights here, but you should be okay if you skip them for the first day.  Alternatively, you can fill up gallon milk cartons with water to give yourself an 8.33 pound weight.

Day 2 is plyometrics, no weights there.

Just an extra set of lungs

All the strength training can be done with resistance bands. Each dvd (that involves strength training) has one person strictly doing bands to demonstrate.

Good luck, I think its a great program.

Finally pushed play on P90X.  Day 1 was tough, I had to stop with 13 minutes to go, is that normal?  I skipped the Ab Ripper tonight, a little whipped from today.

Pace yourself, do as much as you can and stick with it. After a few weeks you'll be doing the entire workout and thinking back to your first week.  Dont do so much weight that you're too sore to do the next day's workout.   Ab Ripper was impossible for me to get through the first few times.

Don't get discouraged if you have to take breaks or can't do all the reps. It will get better if you keep with it.

Plyometrics is a killer the first time through ... ok maybe 2nd and 3rd time too

Good luck!

I am nearing the end of my 90 days. I feel so much stronger. It seems like such a short time ago that I started but it is less than a week shy. I am going to stretch it out at least 1 extra week to make up for some lost days. I regret not taking all of the measurments at the beginning. I would like to know how I have changed.

Stick with it. It is not easy but it really does work. I am really interested to see what it has done for or against my tri training as I have done almost no SBR's while doing P90X.

LOOOONG!  Haha... It has been cold, snowy, just about the same as every year!  Seeing bits of spring now though. I'm dreaming of the days when I can get out on the boat and be in the sun . P.S I have some family that live in the Catawba Cliffs. Nice area.

Subject: P90X off season

I used P90X classic for an off season training program after Ironman FL Nov. 6, I wanted a break from all the long S.B.R. training eating power bars, gels and carbo drinks. My results have been more than I expected went down a pant size and it fixed a shoulder problem I had been fighting for several months, I picked up a half inch of arm size and when I showed up at the pool for the first time this year last week my swim buddys were wow you look like your in great shape. I had wondered how this break would affect my Tri racing and my daughter's college Tri team put on an early season sprint to help pay for their trip to nationals so I went to it  this weekend April 2 even though I had only done 2swims, 3bike rides & 5 runs this year. I was surprised with my race shape ended up 50th overall not sure how many ended up racing she said they had over 200 entered the week before and it was really cold 35deg even with a pool swim I'm sure they had some no shows. I was 3rd in the 50-54 age group.  I will say the P90X break I took has me fresh and excited to train for this season and I'm as strong and flexible as I have been in a long long time so... I would recommend P90X as an off season training plan. I am doing sort of a hybrid working in S.B. R. training a little more each week but I hate to give up the P90X  shape it's different then tri race shape and it’s been great.

This is very much my experience. I have done largely niothing but S,B, R, for most of the last 5 years. I decided after IMAZ in Nov. that it was time for a change. Started late in Dec. and am just finishing up. During that time I was pretty dedicated to P90X and did almost no SBR. I did an off road duathlon 2 weeks ago and PR's by 3:26 over my best time ever even when I trained for the running and riding. Another up side is that I no longer feel frail. S,B,Ring left me very one dimensionally strong but everything else was weak. I am a great advertisement for P90X I am truly a believer.

Another true believer here too - even so much so that I have decided to become a beachbody coach! I did my first round of P90x after tri season ended in 2009. It was awesome. I had been a regular in the weight room for years, but I was truly amazed at the results from this program. Since that time, I have done a hybrid of P90x and Insanity as well as P90x plus. I am doing sort of a hybrid of the various workouts now along with some swim, bike, and run. This morning was spin class followed by Total body x. What a great total body workout!

Keep pushing play!

Do not do running on the same days as plyo or legs.

I would do swimming before any weight training in the day depending on how hard you lift and how much like jello your muscles will feel.  Not good in the water
