rreischl - 2010-04-13 4:44 PM   Feeling behind on my bike training for sure - just curious, what distances are y'all doing this weekend on the bike?

Renee

2:45 (40ish miles) and doing the IMMoo loop (just the loop, not the ingress/egress) for the first time this year, well, first time ever.  I've ridden parts of the course, just not the complete loop from Verona.

I'm supposed to do 2:45 but I'm doing a local 50 mile organized ride and might tack on a few more miles depending on how I'm feeling.  The wind has been absolutely brutal on my two long rides outside so I'm hoping for a break from that on Sunday!

No riding for me this weekend.  My wife is running the Boston Marathon and we head out tomorrow.  I rode 3hrs last week.  I'll get the long rides in next weekend.  I'm almost at 1200 miles so far for this year, so I'm happy with where I am with the bike.  I'm also having some hip issues so hopefully the short break from intense training will help resolve it.

I did buy a new road bike today.  A Cannondale Six 6 Carbon road bike.  I have a Felt B12 as my tri bike, but needed something more practical for riding in groups.  I am looking forward to riding the new bike.  I will use the Felt for the race though.

Good luck to your wife in Boston!

I'm going to try and get a ride in one morning. I was away all week and will be out of town all next week as well. It's rare that I travel two full weeks in a row so family time gets priority over work outs this weekend At least that is the excuse this weekend

I just bought a road bike too! Cervelo S2, I am so in love with it. It's way more fun than the tri bike. I'll do most of my long rides on it, maybe two per months on the P2.

I'm scheduled for 70 this weekend but the weather is miserable so I'll likely shorten. I went long last weekend so it feels fine to slack a little!

Lisa, my long bike this weekend is a 2 hour ride.  Drove through Madison last evening on my way home from Lacrosse.  Made me think about this September!

How did everyone's rides go this weekend?  I ended up with just over 62 miles and then did a 10 minute transition run.  Very happy with how it went.  Never got to the dark place of "how in the hell am I going to go 112 miles and then run a marathon?"  I'm sure I'll get there as mileage increases and race day gets closer but for being April, I'm happy where I'm at!

On Saturday my wife and I did a 3.5 hour ride with a 30 minute transition run.  Then on Sunday we did a 2200 yard swim and a 1 hour 40 min run.  Both days went ok.

Although it's a bit daunting to think about doing this for the next 21 weeks.  Why did I sign up for this thing again??

Nice rides everyone! It was so cold and windy here so I ended up doing three shorter rides, 25 Friday, 31 Saturday and 36 Sunday, instead of my 70. I figure I'll wait for the warmer weather Friday to get back to a single long ride. I can't wait for Spring to really be here and stay!

100 of us registered on BT for this race now... wow!

So those of you who have a standard crank... What size gearing are you planning on using for the IMOO hills? Right now I have an 11-23 that I'm going to swap out for either a 12-25 or 13-27 (campy) but I'm having trouble deciding.

Right now don't have the $$ to invest in a compact crank.

I've got a 53/39 on the front of my P2C and I bought it with a 12-25 cassette. Probably swap out for a 12-27. Some interesting info on the IMLP board about gearing for the LP event. There's reference to the Slowtwitch boards and some interesting dialogue. Bottom line seems to be that for most of us MOP/BOPs, compact cranks and larger cassettes are the way to go. We should be spinning up those hills and saving the legs for the run. I'm with you, IdealMuse - don't have enough cash to drop on a new crank.

Have you ridden hills like the MOO course on that gearing? If not, give it a try to be sure it's not going to burn out your legs. I rode a compact and 12/27 in last year's race and thought it was perfect, but have been advised I'd have a better run if I went with a triple. I'm also doing LP and recommend checking out the recent gearing discussion on that thread. I borrowed a cassette last year, maybe you can find someone to trade or loan? At least to try? I have a standard and 12/25 on my road bike and hate it. I am waiting for my compact to arrive so I can switch it out. There is no way I'd want to run a marathon after climbing hills on that set up!

I have a 53/39 on the front and a 12-27 on the back of my Felt B12.  I used this last year at IMCDA (which is very hilly as well) and was fine on the run.

The road bike I just bought has compact cranks on it.  I'm interested in trying it out and seeing if I can tell the difference.

As Lazymarathoner said, be sure to try it out on the course and make sure you don't burn your legs up.

I just got a new cassette (Ultegra) and chain (DuraAce 7900) from Get A Grip for $160.00 (got the CTC discount).  If you go with a cheaper chain you can probably come in under $120, and you may not even need a new chain.  I had 2500 miles on mine and it was shot.

I need to figure out what my front chain-ring is... right now it's at the shop getting a tune up so I can't count the teeth. I was under the impression that I had a standard-ish crank, but looking at the specs for my bike on the web there is an off chance it's a 50/36 which isn't super compact, but smaller then what most come with.

Also I was wrong about what's available to me: 12/25 13/26 or 13/29. I'm leaning to either the 26 or 29... just don't know if the gaps in the 29 are too annoying and overkill. I've talked to some females my size who are slightly stronger bikers and they say go for the 29. Not sure if that still applies if my front is a 50/36.

Won't have a chance to ride the course until at least next month or the month after. Hopefully will be able to at least hit some hills in the 'burbs in the next few weeks.

I have a 50/34 with a 12-25 cassette.  You folks think I will have problems on the course?  Should I get a different cassette?

You should be fine.  You are running a compact crankset.  You have essentially the same gearing as those of us running a standard crankset (53/39) with a 12/27 cassette.  If you are a weak cyclist you may want to look at a new rear cassette or going to a triple.

I had a 12/25 and Machinery Row swapped it out for a 12/27 at no cost as I hadn't ridden the new bike yet :-).  Hoping that will work well for me.

Well peeps, I do believe we're 20 wks out so everyone should be hard at work by now.  I will hopefully be more than a lerker around here for the next five months and a little more religious when it comes to logging workouts.  Today being day #1 went well for me....I'm done and it's only 5pm  Cool.  I'm know it won't last long but it sure feels nice to be done for the day.

Happy training to all

Not a weak cyclist here, but went with the 12/27 on a compact 50/34 crank last year and was happy I had it.

mattb1 - 2010-04-01 10:09 AM There is an open water swim race on 8/21 on the course.  My plans are to do the 2.4 miles swim and then ride at least 1 if not 2 loops of the course.  If anybody wants to join me you are more than welcome.  This could be a good opportunity to test out your swim fitness and wetsuits, etc...

IMOO SWIM

Me and LindaKC will be there... road tripping it up from Kansas

The web site above seems to be lacking key detail.  Is there any info on exactly when the swim race starts, cost, etc?

The timing is perfect so I would love to do the swim and then head out on a long bike.

No Details have been released yet.  It says after 3/1.  Keep checking back and they will probably post the links soon.  The Wisconsin board may know more details.

Schedule

Still no info so I requested an update on the swim.  I looked at the 2009 swim and I imagine the 2010 will be similar.  Looks like about $48 for the entry fee and one day USMS card.  Has anyone decided for sure to come up if they have the race?  I may book a motel soon and mark it in my calendar if so.  I should come up at least once and ride part of the course at least to see if I really need to change my 12-25 cassette for a 12-27.Smile

Now that we are wrapping up April, how about we rip off an idea from the IMLP thread and have a May mileage goal.  For the last couple of months they have been posting mileage goals and seeing who hits it at the end of each month.  Nothing competitive just something to keep you motivated.

I was thinking the following:

~ Bike = 450 Miles
~ Run = 70 Miles
~ Swim = 25K Yards

May Mileage goals:

Bike 400 miles (will be out east for a week w/o a bike so I'm dropping 100 miles off)
Run 90 miles
Swim 10000 yards (still recovering from injury)

Kinda hard for me to guesstimate since my training group coach only gives us a week or two glance of what's to come... and our true build phase isn't for another 4 weeks, but I'll take a wild guess keeping in mind I'm mostly BOP.

Bike: 350mi
Run: 40mi (or run/walk 100mi)
Swim: 20k
