Just would like to start the season one game ahead of the Yankees. Mandy So far so good...forget Lackey, I'm liking this whole TEAM. Lots of optimism right now, we'll see how long that lasts! |

Maybe an evening ride and/or run in the Swamp, followed by endless discussions at the SH about how great(lousy) we are? 3) I'm dropping out of Rutgers Half too. Might run part of it though - depending how the legs feel. 4) Swamp rides are good, but not lunchtime during the week. How are evenings? How about a weekend morning? NJ Timbermen: How about a swamp ride this Sunday say around 9 or 9:30? Possible meeting places I'll throw out: - Raptor Trust parking lot - Meyersville Circle deli (maybe crowded w other bikers) - Meyersville Baseball parking lot Let's do it! |

Master 1989 New Jersey | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread I'm in. 9am Sunday for the NJ-Timberman ride. How about at the deli at Meyersville Circle. Not sure if they want bikers parking there, but you can park in that softball lot. I'd ride to the circle anyway so doesn't matter to me where to start. Cool. |

Expert 657 Portland | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread I am not a big fan of getting most calories from a drink. Especially if you have trouble getting down the fluids in the first place. I had planned on using carbopro when I did Lake Placid in 2008 and it rained the entire day.. It was a real struggle to get the fluids down. If you dilute the carbo pro enough so that you don't notice it, you are looking at pushing a heck of alot of fluid in order to get 150-200cal/hr. IMO... fluids and calories are two completely seperate issues, and trying to mix them is setting yourself up for unnecessary complications. |

What a crazy day. I agree with you that fluids/fueling are 2 separate issues, but alot of people find eating solid food more difficult. And using gels is fine, but you get sick of them after a while. What did your IM plan consist of? I did LP last year - i stuffed my face while on the first loop of the bike. Banana, powerbars, snickers bar, Carbo-pro, etc. I do think the shorter the race, the more you rely on liquid calories vs. solid. And that's the beauty of Carbo-pro, I can put in an extra 200 calories and dont' even notice any change in the liquid. |

Regular 91 | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread NJ crew-- I am out for Sunday ride. I have a family wedding on Sat evening and we are staying over and will not be home until early afternoon. Hoping I can get a ride in later in the day. I like all the responses regarding nutrition for the HIM it's not something I've given much thought to yet. Question---I got into the NYC Marathon which is November 7th. Do you think running a marathon after Timberman is a smart thing to do? I'm hoping the training for the HIM plus the additional weeks leading up to the marathon would be a good training. I did NYC marathon last year and I loved it. It was my first and only marathon and was hoping not to have to defer this year. |

Expert 657 Portland | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Denise I don't think you should have a worry about doing the NYC marathon after Timberman. I think a marathon before TM would be a disaster, but afterward, no problem. You will have plenty of time to recover and will be in good shape to continue training for that run beforehand. |

Expert 868 CALEDONIA/MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread NYC MARATHON POST TIMBERMAN...Do it. I think you will actually set yourself up well. I agree with what I belive Mike stated regarding the situation being the other way around; it would be more challenging. NUTRITION...For a HIM I have two bottles of G20 (Now GU Brew) and I will also take water or Gatorade that is being offered if I need it. In addition I will often take a GU Roctane in the first half of the ride and in the second 1/2 of the ride. In the past I would also consume a Clif Bar about 1/2 way throught the ride, but this past year at the Steelhead 70.3 a mishap caused me to not have any of my GUs or Clif and I simply grabbed two PowerGels at different times on the bike and I was fine. On the run I may have taken in a GU midway and a GU later (IF I took two). I have never been one to count calories or determine sweat rate and all that jazz. I mostly go by feel and experience. Backing up, I have had a bagal and a Gatorade a couple hours before the race and a Clif bar on hand during pre-race prep which sometimes I eat all of, part of, or none of depending on how I'm feeling at previous HIM events. I've even done cereal a few hours before. For me personally, less is generally more, but I like to have more then I need available on the bike (but not a riding food store either). However, I'm also realizing that my body can take in quite a variety of nutrition (brand, flavor, etc) so, I am starting to rely more on what the event offers (especially on the run). Having said that, I prefer GU products over all of the others I have used, but I rely on Clif for solid food. As far as when to take what. As I mentioned, I start with liqiuds, move to gels, hit solid food mid-ride so my body is adjusted and has time to process before the run, then back to gels on the run or late in the bike if I need it. That's the long and short of it. I know it's not real scientific and it varies from event to event based on conditions and how the day is going. As far as short course events...all liquid. My biggest recommendation is to try eating various items during training. Sometimes, if for no other reason, to see how to open wrappers and put them back in your pockets on the fly. In fact, examine your product wrappers ahead of time because often there are specific places on the packaging where you should begin your rip. Good luck. Enjoy your group ride this weekend. I've got a long ride tomorrow and a long run Sunday. I'm sure I won't be able to help myself but to share how it went. Peace, ~Sam |

There's plenty of time in between. I've been checking the calendar and I figured it out that if I'm up to a 15 mile run a couple weeks before T-man, then I can fit in 3 20milers before NYC. |

I had a steady 60-miler yesterday...challenging wind the last 10 miles, but it's all good. Today I managed an 11.5-miler averaging 7:17...but the important thing is that my calves held up well! I'd just be hitting the run a little heavier than the typical HIM plan calls for heading into TMAN if you can fit the extra volume in....just finished up a 20 miler this morning myself and feeling good! Going for a recover ride in a bit! I think I have spring fever! I just want to get out there! |

Walt, Jackie, and myself met-up at 9am and did a nice loop thru the swamp with some nice hill climbs. Unlike the other two - I do all my rides solo -- so I was able to learn a few hand gestures and managed to keep pace nicely. We had one great screaming downhill section with jackie leading the way - her new nickname is "No Fear" she was flying! Totalled about 25 mi with my ride to/from home to the meeting place. Saw some new roads in my area that I've never ridden, and we bumped into a local RD who was out running. www.greenbrookracing.com The May 23 event will be my first race this season... I saw this link on another tri board and thought it was so funny i'd repost. http://www..com/2010/04/hilarious_uranus_pearl_izumi_4d_chamois_ad.htm I'm off for a run in a bit, then baseball practice. Sam - great to hear bout the calves ... I had a great run Friday ... felt like I was flying, no, actually it felt like I was being carried. Just what I needed from a mental boost perspective. I did 6 mi in 50 mins with three nice hills which is fast for me. train safe |

Also sounds like Jackie "no fear" is a good one to follow on the screaming down hills. 21 mile run (it was supposed to be 18, but we took a wrong turn...oops) + short 15 mile bike this weekend. I need to get to a pool before I forget how to swim. The ice on the lake just went out, it should be @ 38 degrees right now... Cheers, Mandy |

Then she basically pulls the entire time. For me, my first "official" ride of the season. Everything else has been slow meandering. Great to be reminded that I have to actually push a bit. Very enjoyable. PS - Had to change my avatar because it was deemed "too scary - do I really want to ride with this guy?" Think my new one is more fitting. |

Extreme Veteran 483 San Diego | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Cool that the NJ peeps were able to get together for a ride. That's awesome! I'll be spending today at work, recovering from a tougher than expected Olympic. The wind picked up on us a bit (it's storming today) and it made for a struggle for portions of the bike and run. At least we did have some long tailwind sections on the bike...yeah! It was struggle, struggle: 19 mph going south and then barely working: 26 mph going north. Ended up 4th AG. I posted a race report last night if anyone's interested. Now in full-taper mode for Boston. Will pick up swim / bike volume for CDA when I get back. And my thoughts on Timberman to NYC Marathon: Go for it! Of course, I don't know that I should be the voice of reason, but I do think that 3 months is plenty of time to recover from a HIM and build for a marathon. IMO, the half marathon run at the end of a triathlon doesn't really beat you up that much since you're typically not moving all that fast haha. I'm MUCH more sore following a standalone half mary. My advice would be to take a couple weeks off (if you can stand it), start back with some easy running and then jump into a training plan 8-10 weeks out, with long runs starting around 10-12. I think you'll find you will be ready with plenty of time for a 2-week taper before NYC. |
