mareelouise - 2010-01-10 10:02 PM Hi all weekend was a bit of an odd one for me- I piked on the race on Sunday (but thanks to those of you who wished me luck)- just felt I wasn't quite ready yet1 But will have to go in the next one. Did however get out on my new bike and had a great ride- despite the heatwave we have on at the moment. Was a bit sore Sunday in the neck and shoulders after the ride- my brother-in-law (my personal bike expert)- said that was to be expected and not to worry- so I won't, just need to do some stretching- and really seriously considering yoga. Did a transition session with the club- learning how to run with the bike and mount and dismount. Did a bit of swimming in the bay- was beautiful on such a hot day- key thing was looking ahead to avoid the jellyfish- there are alot in the bay at the moment- their sting won't kill you, but it really stings so best to be avoided! Swimming tonight- looking forward to loosening up my shoulders! Have a great week everyone. Cheers Maree

We dont want to hear about how warm you got it!!! LOL We are freezing here!!  If you werent ready for the race than it was good for you to just wait, no big deal.  Im trying to figure out the bike thing as well.  I get sore in my neck and arms as well.  I was fitted for my bike so some of it just will be getting used to riding it.

Hi Charlotte.  I am not sure if there is a way to get to last page of the thread, but if you copy the address and paste it into your training log dashboard (the section right above where you log your workouts) it will take you back to this page and then you can just go to the last page manually.  Or you can just keep updating the link as pages are added.  Maybe Seren knows, she seems to be the tech guru around here

AlanaF - 2010-01-09 6:50 PM Race strategy questions -
I have an indoor mini sprint one week from today and have a few questions.

1.  The cycling portion is on exercise bikes.  It seems to me that increasing the resistance doesn't really give you that much more distance.  So it seems like it would make the most sense to put the resistance on the lowest and just crank out a really high rpm.  Does anyone have any experience in this department?

2.  I am dealing with a strained calf that is not responding well to running.  If I stretch it each 1/4 mile I can make it through.  My whole calf just gets rock hard and tightens clear up into behind my knee.  Should I just run as per planned this week, stretching as needed or back off?  Or, do I just suck it up and run through it without stretching??
(my only injury, and it was a coach that made me do it! grrr)

It sounds like everybody that has a stick doesn't really use it all that often,

Alana - I admire your gumption and grit - but what do you gain by not stretching?  Sure, it might heal if you don't stretch it, but the injury will linger for longer if you don't take care of it.  My advice would be to take it easy this week, which will not only allow you to heal but to do really well in your race.

Good luck!

DQ

Alana - i have to agree with DQ - i would lay off the running, at least for a little while if it seems to be making the calf worse and focus on recouping the calf. Maybe walking and stretching.  Of course, if it's only your calf that's bothering you there is plenty of other stuff you can do. Swim, Core work, strength work (back - pull-ups, rows, etc). I'd see if you can try riding a excercise bike or spin bike without a lot of resistance. It may help loosen it up (or it might make it worse). You need to get it warmed up some how before you stretch it tho.

It's only January - it's not time to push thru the injuries yet (in my opinion). You still have time to let get healed up and go into the season inurjy free

I agree with these guys.  Cramps could be a sign your body is telling you something.  Injury? Dehydrated? Not enough salt?  It could be a number of things.  Is there someone at the gym you could ask without having to go to the doctors?  Like Bob said, the last think you want to do is have a serious injury in January.

Congrats on the new bike.  Break in the bike easy.  Your BIL is right.  And you can complain about how warm it is there now, because it will be our turn soon enough.  How cold does it get there during the winter?

The jellies left here long ago
If your shoulders and necks are hurting after riding, you probably need to focus on keeping the pressure on the handle bars lighter. Don't get me wrong, it will probably still be a little sore, but if you're overly sore you should try to lighten up. Push your butt back in the saddle and use your core to hold yourself up, not the handle bars.
I think you have an excuse to go and get some massages for now tho

Hi all,
Melissa, Bob and Serenity, thanks for the advice on the stiff shoulders. I think you're right- I tense up too much- I'll see if I can relax that more and work on my core a bit. Am going to go to a yoga class tomorrow night and hopefully start some regular yoga as well.
I know its freezing over there, and it seems we've got the nice warm weather, but things really hotted up here yesterday- we hit 109.3 degrees F (43 degrees celsius)- so any activity other than swimming was off the cards. Did a good workout in the pool- really helped shoulders and neck- a shame it was just as hot once I got out.
cheers

Qua17 - 2010-01-08 9:53 PM Hey Scott -

I had two things I wanted to touch base with you about... First, go Buckeyes Second - my family has a place up North and my wife and I go there for a month in July. I'd love to do a race up there. Do you know of any or do you know of a good site (in addition to BT Michigan) where I could go to find some info?

Thanks... I apologize for giving you about Michigan... If it makes you feel better - most of the people in my family went there...

Have a good weekend!

DQ

Hey everybody,  Sorry I've been AWOL for a few days.  Seems time was conspiring against me again this past week and I haven't been able to get everything accomplished i need to between work home and kids let alone keeping up with postings here.

As to your question, I would post on the forum and ask specifically for help in locating a race in teh area where you will be vacationing.  You will get responses.  The folks who post there are super helpful.  I know that there are races all over the north country, but not sure exactly where or when you will be there.  Good luck!  Go Blue!Wink

This may be a race to consider.  It's a good cause even if the event planner is not always the greatest.

"The 1st annual Tri-for-Life triathlon. Tri-for-Life is a Michigan based tri team, formed in 2008 by 3 brothers to promote the need for organ donation. They lost their youngest brother age 20 in a car accident in 2003. He donated his organs and saved the lives of 7 people. At least one recipient and 4 of his 5 children will be competing in the event in memory of the lost brother.

If that isn't enough...the race will feature a great course for elites as well as beginners. Clean lake swim with a nice beach, rolling and beautiful bike course along lakes and state land. The Run is a closed course on the newly created Southern Links Rail Trial. All of this followed by a downtown finish. The entire town will be closed down to host this event.

Want more?... there will be a car show on city streets for friends and family. A great city park for the kids only steps away from the finish area. Also, several things on the race course to set this race apart from any other. Paid 1st man/woman out of the water, Paid fastest Bike and Run times. As well as prizes for being in the middle and back of the pack.

Great post race food, Tech T-Shirts and lots of other great freebies and raffle items.

So if you are looking for a mid-season mid-Michigan race that might be closer to home for a lot of people. Check out the new Tri-for-Life Triathlon in Otter Lake, MI on July 18th. Support a great cause, and enjoy a family atmosphere at this race. Going to be a great one for a long time to come.

This is a new 3D event... the Tri-for-Life team will be working very closely with the 3D staff to get this right. It's their name on the event... and I know they read the posts here and will have your concerns covered. Contact [email protected] for more info. Or check out the event at 3D site (more info coming soon there). Registration is open on Active."

How do you decide?   Now that we are getting into the 2010 season so many race registrations are starting up.  What do you take into consideration as to which race to enter?   I am trying to do at least one per-month but with so many options it gets a bit confusing.

Hi all, My name is Joe for those who do not know me. I live in the Boston area and have been lurking on this thread due to the fact I have met some of the members of this group. I wanted to chime in on the shoulder issues while ridding. The suggestions of core and relaxing are very important and relivant. I would like to add check your bike fit. Adjusting the seat or handle bar height can take some tension off. Also something as simple as rotaing the bars twards the ground can make a difference. Bike fit is so very important. Hope this helps and feel free to PM me for more info if you need to.

As for selecting the right races, I belong to a local tri group as well as BT. This group happens to be Trifury in the Boston area. You can normaly check these local teams to find out which races they select to do as a team. The local training thread on BT has state specific threads. In the top left corner of those threads should be a link to teams that are listed through BT. Asking in those threads can help you find good races and possible training partners. Good luck with your race selections.

Joe

I read race reports.  I took into consideration travel and how it fit into my family's schedule.  I figured out what races my friends were doing.  I did the same thing, about one a month.  I did 3 sprints and 1 Oly in my first year, and it was just enough.  Go onto your state's forum and ask.  Folks around here are not too short on opinions, good or bad.

Good morning.  I was thinking of stealing an idea from my pals Aquagirl and MAV.  They have set up a challenge with their group that I thought might be fun and motivating.  How about a virtual Ironman?  We can see how long it takes each person to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 and run 26.2.  We can compete individually or in smaller teams of 2 or 3.   Let me know what you think.

Hi Joe, I have a feeling you had been watching me. You are my OG mentor. For the rest of the group Joe would be a great source of info as he has been for me. He is why I am here and has done an excellant job introducing me to this sport. I would request to out little group we add one more if no one minds. I think he's up to the task as well.
Nice picture Papa smurf, I asked my kids and they don't even now what a Smurf is. I'm getting old.
