Run was good too!  Every pain free run I consider a success now.  I get to graduate to a 7/3 run/walk ratio next time out!

Jacklcm - 2010-01-21 8:03 PM After taking a good three days off for right leg IT band pain and left elbow pain.  I went back this week.  Unfortunately my run class we did fast /slow runs 200 fast 200 recover twice than 400 hard and recovery repeat 3 times, but it didn't hurt too bad.  Swam with an tennis elbow wrap on my arm and no bad pain.  This is my recovery week before base two starts and I looking forward to getting back at it next week.

I was surprised to see that I hit a new high max heart rate during the first 400 fast run (180 bpm previous high 173).  I haven't yet done the max heart rate test mentioned in BT section on heart rate.   What was weird is that the next 400 I ran faster with a lower max heart rate.  Not sure what to make of it, but I noticed that my heart rate seems to peak early in workouts than settle out.    Anybody have any thoughts?

Sounds like a good week for a recovery week.  Glad things are feeling better on all fronts.

I'm no heart rate expert, nor do I play one on TV, but I'm guessing the spike just came from the shock of the initial effort.  By the second interval your body had conditioned to the effort and was better prepared for the hard effort.

Since it's only a little before 7pm here on the West Coast, I can still get in my birthday greetings.  Hope it has been great so far--and if I'm not mistaken, you might have an hour or two left to get in a little more celebrating Wink

Thanks.  The real celebrating starts tonight.  The good news is drainer rides, although not fun at the time, are excellent hangover removers

Where did you get your wetsuit? Never heard of anyone that  would let you wear it in a pool.  I don't know if it is true, but I was told that the clorine may actually ruin wetsuits.  Anyone know?

I too have to get a full wetsuit before my May race and it would help tremendously if I could try it in the pool a few times.

I've heard both sides.  Some say it will ruin it, some say that as long as you rinse it off plenty as soon as you are out of the pool it should be okay.

It's probably best to check with the manufacturer to see what they recommend.

The lake will be plenty warm by April

Since we're talking wetsuits, should I assume that just using it the day before should be adequate, since I'm pretty confident on fit? Also, with body glide to get the suit off how thick are you supposed to put it on? Should you be like greased pig slick or just a fine layer? Is there a 'too much' point?

This is only my experience, but it took me several open water swims before I felt really comfortable with my wetsuit.  The first time out, I fought with it alot.  It was tight (had to buy a mens so chest didn't have so much room), I didn't like the neck being so tight, the strap tried to stangle me, and there is alot more buoyance so you don't have to kick as much (or at all, as I did).

I would try to get in at least a couple of swims prior to a race.  I think I am lucky with the suit.  I used suit juice in the beginning, but I don't use anything really to get it on and off anymore.  I think all the slimy crap I swam in did the trick

I would suggest a couple of swims with the wetsuit before your race.  You don't really know how constrictive it may be or how it affects the range of motion of your swim stroke until you actually wear it and swim.

As far as how much body glide to use it may be a personal preference.  I use a pretty thin layer and have never had any problems getting the suit off or on.

Awesome, thanks.

Hey, also, if I hadn't lubed my bike chain in two months and did so last night, could that be a reasonable explination on how I magincally gained .5 mph overnight, or should I check out my trainer tension just to be sure?

Sorry for, like, monopolizing the group here, but another question:

On the bike portion of the race how does the bottle exchange work? Should I make sure I load disposable bottles (not ones I really like), then just toss the empty ones aside at the aid stations and pick up nice, new full ones? Should I add the cost of a couple bottles to my expected race expenses?

Also, is the run portion like anormal running event where you just use good ole paper cups?

Oh, and for tri clothes, better to go matchy-matchy with same color scheme on shorts/shirt or better to go complimentary color scheme? Running I always do black shorts, grey shirt, but looked like tri folks might always do matching.

Thanks for the feedback.  I think  your right that my body needs to get over that initial shock then adjust.  I plan to look for that in my hard workouts.  Today in spin class I saw the same kind of thing.  If I get through the initial ramp up with some overshoot I can settle in and keep up a good steady output.  That's the challenge with new information from the Garmin 310 it give more more info. than I ever had, but I'm learning alot about how my body reacts to training.

I owe you a Garmin update. The Garmin works pretty good.  Its has the flexibility to monitor almost any parameter with up to 4 items per screen and 4 screens for each mode (bike, run, other) and the virtual partner that you can set the speed to race against it.  Data uploads work great with the wireless USB device.  You just turn your computer on, plug in the USB device, and then turn on the Garmin 310xt and it uploads you data to the Garmin connect website.   After data uploads you can go to BT and it locates the data and lets you upload your workout to record your data in you log.

The bike sensors work just fine with the wireless combined speed and candence sensor mounts your rear of the bike so  you can use it on trainer.  I got the bike quick connect that mounts on the bike and your wrist for $12, and it works fine, while some reviews say it falls out, I think that can only happen if  you don't snap the unit in the holder properly.

Battery life is great, I can use it almost all week without recharge, and recharging is a snap to connect.  I run/ride at night and the back light can be set to stay on continuously.  I lost the data for one workout, and I'm not sure what went wrong but I probably did something wrong.
The unit is kind of big but it appears much smaller then the 305, but the quick connect wristband makes the watch stick out further.  Lots of folks complain it doesn't work in the water, but that makes sense its a GPS and it loses signal under water.  Maybe strapping it to you head would work, but I haven't played with that yet since I swim indoors these days.

I got it from xterra. Clicked the xterra banner and paid $150 for a full wetsuit that normally cost $400. You can change size or model within 30 days of reciving it unless you damage it they let you test swim it. Most manufacturers say chlorine is bad for the wetsuit over time. But I do not think is a problem if you just do it a few times and rinse it well.

I've got a friend that is Anal about maintaining his chain. He usually works on it after every other ride.

Personally... I'm pretty lazy with it. I don't think I've cleaned / oiled my Felts chain in about 700 miles. Usually only before a race or if I ride in the rain will my chain get any love.

That's probably not the best policy though.

Monopolize away!

You will definitely want to use bottles that you won't mind parting with.  Sometimes you'll get a bottle in your pre race goody bag.  You can use that so technically its not an expense.  The good news is that you'll come away with a crappy water bottle or two at the end of the race that you can use at your next one.

Paper cups on the run.

I'm not sure there is a tri folk dress code so just wear whatever is the most comfortable for you.  I've seen all sorts of outfits on people and have never really thought twice about it.

I sound a lot like your friend.  I'll usually clean and lube after every 2 or 3 outdoor rides.  I don't bother in the winter on the trainer.

I have gotten a good 5000 miles out of my current chain and still no signs of stretching so I will continue to use it.  I'm not sure the extra maintenance has contributed to that.

Went into work on Sunday instead of my usual yoga class (and some times, long ride) to dig myself out and prep for the next month.  Looks like I'll be on the road multiple days, three out of the four weeks in February.  Training, needless to say, is going to be challenging--especially on the bike.  I'm really bummed thinking about the lost momentum.  Oh, and I woke up with a cold too.

I had originally planned to run a half mary in early March--but now with all the training disruption, I'm leaning toward shining it.  I can do the distance as my long runs are in the 9 to 10 mile range, but I'm just thinking that I won't be as mentally focused and prepared for racing as I would like to be going into an event.

Ever find yourself scratching a race you thought you wanted to do because life got in the way and you just couldn't prepare the way you wanted?  Or is sucking it up and sticking with the plan a better way to go to avoid regrets in the end?

I would go for it and race anyway at least to get experience. Call it a training race if you have to.  It is already paid for, mist well use it.
