dinabean - 2010-01-26 7:50 AM Here's my stupid swim question of the day -- how do you keep track of your distance?  I can't seem to keep straight how many laps I've done.  While I am swimming, my brain keeps going in all directions and when I finish a lap, I can't remember how many have passed.  Help!  Counter?  Some other tech solution?

Dineen,

Not a stupid question at all - I've been swimming for a long time and still can't keep track of my laps.  My personal preference is to use a structured workout rather than swimming laps for distance.

I prefer this for a few reasons

- the distance is calculated for me so as log as i can keep track of what i'm doing in any given set, i don't have to worry about keeping track for the entire workout

- it adds variety, personally i get bored to death with just swimming laps (and i LOVE to swim) - for me, having a structured workout is very helpful in keeping boredom at bay

- incorparating drills, i'm a big believer in drills for novice and experienced swimmers alike - i nearly always incorporate drills into every swim workout i do.  so much of swimming is about the technique and there's no better way to work on it than incorporating drills into your workout

Resources for swim workouts:

i thought it might be helpful to mention a couple of resources that i know of for swim workouts

BT of course is a great resource - here are some links to beginner plans from BT
http://beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=755
http://beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=777
http://beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=801

i also really like swimplan.com - you register and then enter some basic information, reason for swimming, skill level, strokes, etc - you then have access to free swim programs - the site creates programs for you based on the information you provided

- i print them off and put them in a gallon size baggie to keep them dry at the pool - generally i do end up tweaking them some, but that's just me

oh, and the site is free

another resource is   Workouts in a Binder:  Swim workotus for Triathletes - Gale Bernhardt

it's a great book of workouts and it's waterproof so you can set it up right on the edge of the pool - i would say these workouts are geared toward a somewhat experienced swimmer for the most part - jmho

hope this is helpful

Hey Dineen - I've had the same problem. Someone told me they take little rocks to the pool in a bag and use one for each lap. I thought that was a pretty interesting idea. Me? I asked my wife to buy me one of those counters you put on my finger for Christmas. It works great and gives you the individual lap time and avgerage lap time. Again, probablly a gadget/guy thing.

Counting laps has been a source of frustration for me as well, going on 3 years now! I do think having a structured workout on paper has helped me. I, too, print them out from swimplan.com or other sources and then put them in a ziplock bag and put it by the side of the pool. It will break it into  50s, 100s, etc. which are much easier to count.

Other methods, I only count the 50's and 100's, not the 25s. Another BT friend recommends saying loudly in your head 100, 200, etc. and only doing flipturns on the 00s, if you're into flipturns. Another method is using the alphabet to count each lap. So I'd swim down the 25 and back to complete a 50 and that would be A, then in my head on the next down and back I'd say words that begin with the letter "A" then I'd move on to "B" and so forth. That might be a little Sesame Street for you, I don't know. Another method is the pebbles or pennies method. Everytime you come to the side, you slip your hand up on the deck and move a penny. Again I would only count the 50s.

Then there are the rings that count laps and the counters you put on the side of the pool and punch/push. If you have a watch that does laps and is waterproof, you could push the lap button at each lap. There you have it, my ideas, fwiw.

Hi all,

I have not been working out at all since I got sick.
Since I had to take a break in my Winning by Losing I'm thinking of not doing that but starting a tri-traning program instead.

I can always get the strenght traning in later.

I want to start doing this now, and have something to write about here.

My husband bought a wetsuit (x-terra) and tried it yesterday (in our livingroom). He has a bike and a wet-suit now and running shoes and I only have running shoes.

It feel like it will take me a long time to get enough money to buy a bike.

Can you train for a sprint just in the gym? And then buy the bike only a few week before the race and still be able to do it in a good way?

Mia, here are some ways to get bikes besides buying a new one:
- Ask friends, neighbors, and coworkers. Lots of people have bikes they don't use and have forgotten about. This is how I got mine, actually.
- Craigslist. Look under "For Sale" and there's a whole section for bikes. There's also the "Free" section... http://asheville.craigslist.org/
- The Classifieds section of your local newspaper.
- Freecycle. Just go to http://www.freecycle.org/ and put your zip code or your city and state in the box. Then you can find all the people in your area who want to give away perfectly good stuff for free!

I always screw up counting laps so I have used these:

http://www.sportcount.com/products.php?category=SportCount&PHPSESSI...

http://www.swimovate.com/poolmate.html

sportcount goes on your finger and you press a button with your thumb

swimovate is a watch that automatically counts for you

Thank you Rebecca.

My husband bought his bike from Craigslist for a great price ($600 I think) so I'll be looking there too.

I actually got off the couch yesterday and went to the pool. I swam and practised breathing for about 45 min. Breathing is hard, so much harder then I thought.

Well, I've decided to start the original 13 week sprint traning plan next week. So I'll have more things to say here.

I'm thinking of buying a wetsuit from xterra, $149 is a really good price I think.

Anyone have any thoughts about them?

I'm thinking of buying new shoes as well at one point. The ones I have now are getting old, but they will proberly do for 3-6 months still.

Oh yes, breathing is hard.

I just swam 200m for the first time ever. Not totally nonstop, but hey.

I'm starting to get my confidence back that yes, I can do this, where "this" = go to school, keep doing well in school, have two jobs, train for a triathlon, and not kill my spouse. I spent the last few days in a funk thinking it wasn't possible and something had to go, but today I'm feeling better about it.

Go Rebecca! Just keep doing it...  I try not to think about it because otherwise it just seems too overwhelming..  You can usually get through one day at a time, sometimes they gang up on you though..

my life... raising/feeding three kids including disabled 10 year old, and a baby, (on my own, fathers not involved, no family around), work full-time, starting vocational specialisation in a month to be a general practitioner, (not sure what US equivalent is, maybe family physician?), studying for exams for this, trying to sell house and somewhere in there... train (my only source of sanity!!).. oh yeah and throw into that the last few months of swine flu, pneumonia, chicken pox and gastroenteritis!!! arrrrrgh!

so I decided today I deserved a little treat - i bought myself my first bike (I've been borrowing a mountain bike) - I HAVE A ROAD BIKE!!!!  I love it, it's beautiful and so fast.  It's a second hand Avanti Vivace, and my very friendly bike shop found it for me for only [US equivalent] $280.
And it's shiny and blue.  I'm in love.  I'll post a photo soon.

Other than that I still haven't shaken this gastro bug, and have taken a couple days off work, so I hope that helps.

Thanks for the head pat Melyssa :) Actually, I think of you sometimes -- it is AMAZING to me that you're doing this while studying, working, and raising 3 kids!

You are right -- one day at a time, wherever possible.

Oh, and we call them general practitioners here in the US too.

You are both amazing.

Nice with the shiney new bike (new for you). We found a bike on Craigslist for me too, but it may be a bit to pricey ($850). I'll keep looking.

So can anyone advise me on cleaning my bike chain?

Lynne - Here is a link to an article on chain cleaning here on BT - http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=...

Melyssa - Congrats on the bike!

I was at the pool last night doing kick drills for a couple laps. Trying to keep a steady, controlled pace I felt like I was going nowhere. I got done with my workout and the lady in the next lane is doing kick drills too but she is like a speedboat compared to me. Feeling a little dejected, I watched as she hit the wall and started back the other way. I had to laugh when I saw she was wearing fins. I'm sure she is still faster than I am but I didn't feel quite so bad.

I just came home after a 10K run/walk exercise. I did it in 74:12 (my best ever 10K time is 65:24 and that was in a race) and it felt pretty good exept my right leg started hurting when I was almost home again.
It hurts on the outside of the thigh almost at the top where the hip is.

It's proberbly a muscle thing, but do you have any suggestion on what can cause it and how to prevent it from coming back?

Hahaha the EXACT same thing happened to me this morning.  A lovely little old lady who was at least in her 60s I'm sure, shared a lane with me doing kick drills and appeared to be keeping up with me quite effortlessly - i was feeling very demoralised until I noticed her flippers!

Sports med not my field so this is not intended to replace proper advice/examination by your doctor... but could be a hip bursitis, or maybe an inflamed iliotibial band (although that commonly presents with knee pain).  There are some other options also, but I would think rest and some icing won't do any harm anyway.  Great work on the run!  Hope your leg feels better soon.

A ref on trochanteric bursitis.. it's a bit doctorish but the overview probably gives you an idea if that's what your leg pain is.  hope it's helpful

Thanks Melyssa, I think that is exactly what it is. It started a few month ago when I walked a 10K very fast and it has come back every time I'm walking fast (it gets a little better if I run instead of walk).

I guess rest is the only thing to do, and maybe take it a little slower on the walking. And also not do a 10K next time, but just a 5K.

Have a great trip, Beth!

Mia, sorry your hip is giving you troubles.  What will you do now?

Melyssa, I am in complete awe of you.  You are my new hero with all of this exercise stuff.  That you manage with three little ones, and on your own is just...amazing.  I know we all do what we have to do, but it doesn't make it any less admirable!

Gotta cut this short -- computer is making some crazy noises at the moment, and I fear it may be dying!  I've been considering a new computer anyway...
