calimavs -  Your name wouldn't be referring to Mavericks would it?  I grew up right up the road in Pacifica.

Pretty good day for me, I went 31 miles and held a 17ish pace with some pretty serious headwinds going out...not blazing fast but I felt that I could have held close to that pace for 112; I also did a quick transition and was able to go a relaxed 9:30 pace for 3 miles; finished with a ton in the tank.

I opted to cancel my swim tonite because I just didn't want to get sick again; last year I was sick, and the week after I did a century, and it relapsed even worse; something I don't need right now.

Great workouts Chris and smart decision making by skipping the swim. It is all about getting to that starting line healthy.

Good call to skip. Usually more DNS than DNF

Wooden Bell - 2010-04-16 9:06 AM Well, it turned into a pretty poor training week.  I had meetings after school, and a few other obligations came up.  I have a 5k race tomorrow, so hopefully this un-planned rest will help   The race starts about 3km from my house, so I'll probably jog over to get warmed up.  I'm really hoping for a sub 20 min (sub 23 might be more realistic) race, and a top 3 finish.  I don't expect a lot of competition, since most of the "fast" runners around here tend to do the 10k when the option in there, but I'd be happy to have someone to push me.

Less than 2 months until the official start of the multisport season for me, with a sprint duathlon.  I have my bike at home now, so it's time to get it on the road (and yes, I do still plan on posting pics for my bike fit... stay tuned).  Only about 2.5 months left of school, then I have my first summer off in... well, since 9th grade!

Good luck w the 5k. Let us all know how it goes!

So I've decided not to join my friend for his 10 hour workout session tomorrow.  Here's what he emailed me for his plan for the day:

Hi Pete,

I gotta check out the weather forecast again for the morning but tentatively:

Waterton Canyon parking lot

8 am road bike – 3 hours. Probably go solo and fast.

11:00 ish – run the 13 mile up and back Waterton Canyon run. 1:24 to 1:35 time depending on how I feel post ride. You are welcome to come and hitch up for the run.

12:30 ish – eat for 20 to 25 mins and change.

1:00 either Mt bike the canyon to CO Trail and beyond or road bike again for 3 hrs.

If I Mt bike I might take a pack with trail shoes and do a 20 to 30 min trail run at the half way point.

Then maybe hit the pool if my shoulder will let me or do a brisk hike with heavier pack..

I think I have to be home around 5 or so I think now…. Or I would throw the kayak in there.

Interested in meeting for the run on for a bit?

I had to politely decline... Even if I join ONLY for the run, I still wouldn't keep up.  I love having friends like this, it gives you a good reality check that you can still improve a lot and a goal to one day join him for a training day, even if I can only keep up on one of his 'recovery' days.

actually I think it would be a really good way to get injured unless you have built up the training over a long time. Avoid the sudden increases in training volume and intensity and you will be injured far less often. Just my opinion

Sorry - totally agree, I meant that I think it would be a good goal to eventually put in the kind of volume necessary to handle a day of training like that - not a near term goal.

I'll be volunteering at IMAZ...does that count. That's probably close to doing a 140 mile race. Handing out water can be very challenging and tiring (JK). I am doing SOMA 1/2 IM in Oct at the same place that they do IMAZ.

phxphotog - 2010-04-15 8:52 PM Update on OWS. As many of you know I work at the CNN affiliate here in Phoenix as a news cameraman. Today I had to edit a story that we did on a local musician that has a song on itunes. She claimed that she wasn't getting paid for all of the downloads. I had told my producer that I had to leave at 3:30 to make my OWS. She has known since the beginning of the week that this was my plan. Well she screwed me again today and I wasn't able to leave until 4:10. By the time I made it out the lake, they were almost done. It doesn't matter if it's track practice, swimming, doctors appt. She just doesn't care and I'm always late to everything. I think she's way in over her head with this job and I think the work speaks for itself. It wouldn't be a problem but people here in Phoenix want to work out around 5pm or earlier and I'm struggling to make this happen.

Sorry to vent but now I have to go to plan B which is a 5 mile run and I'll do the OWS on Sunday.

Hope everyone had a great day!

Your going to hate me after posting this, but I am on the opposite end of spectrum.  Being in the Navy, by instruction we are granted 3 days, minimum of 1.5 hours a week to workout.  On top of that my current boss is a nationally ranked Masters level road/cyclocross .  So my boss tells me to bring my bike to work and plan on riding at least twice a week.  I know, tough isn't it.  It is also great in that he pushes me far further than I ever would push myself.  I am getting in my fair share of intensity work!

It would absolutely be a fast track towards injury.  But wow, I was kind of honored he thought enough of me to invite me though.  I can almost keep up with his wife, but definitely not him.  His wife was actually in second place this past year at RAW (Race Across the West) overall (including the men) after 3 days when she started feeling sick.  Turned out she was >5 weeks pregnant.  I joke with them about how they probably just created the next female phenom of the endurance world.

As for training with him one day... that's a goal I'd like to see build up to over the next year or so.   Maybe he'll start to slow down since he's >40.

What rate / MOS are you?

While in the Marine Corps I spent time on the USS Duluth and USS Juneau...very interesting getting your daily runs on a flight deck...

That's a pretty sweet deal.  Do you mean you're required to do 1.5 hours to work out, but have the option of taking 72 hours (or is it 8hrs x 3 days = 24 hours) ?

Hope everyone has a great weekend. We're going to have beautiful weather here so I'm planning on being outside most of the weekend. One more week until my 1st Olympic. It's in Mexico so I hope I don't get shot by drug runners on the way down.

Anyone racing this weekend?
