ransick - 2010-04-12 1:39 PM Beautiful day here.  Won't be getting a swim in tonight.  My wife bought new lights for the front of the house and I need to wrap up the taxes.  My wife also strongly suggested I think about taking a little more care of the lawn this summer which will be at the expense of my workout schedule.  It's all about balance.  Oh well, I got away with it as long as I could :-).

can you jog & push the mower?

not in the dark at 4 am :-).  Maybe I can get a bike helmet mount light and wear my bike helmet.

i obviously missed the 4am reference. fitting the bike helmet w/ lights makes it easier to have a mowing brick...or protects your head from bricks tossed by angry neighbors woken up by 4 am mowing...either way, it's a win-win!

I need to jog up to Lowe's and Home Depot for the home repair projects.  I wonder if I would get faster service (to get a stinky guy out of the store) or slower service (since I would look like I just ran from the police).

you really think they'd notice?! i'd think that maybe you'd get a 2nd look in a speedo, but that's about it.

Now that it is warm, they probably wouldn't notice.  If I wore a Speedo, they would probably freeze looking at the pasty white guy :-).  I have such fair skin my family wears sunglasses when we go outside :-)

I hear you there Mike. I get what I call a Norwegian Tan - dark with freckles on my arms, neck, face, and legs, lobster red anywhere else the second I'm exposed to the sun.

waltontl - 2010-04-10 11:20 AM Hi all,

I joined a few days ago but never introduced myself.

Name: Tania

Story: I've been a casual runner off and on for a few years, entering a few 5K races when I could - nothing formal.  I was mostly running to keep weight off.  I turned 40 earlier this year and thought it would be cool to do my first tri this year.

Family Status: I'm married, no kids, with 3 dogs, 5 birds and a cat.  I work from home which is pretty freakin terrific I must say.

Current training:  I was following the BT 3X SPrint 20 week program pretty faithfully until a few weeks ago when I sprained my ankle.  I'm just trying to get back into the swing now and start running and biking outside instead of in the gym.  I also do krav maga 3-4 times a week - I'm level 2 and getting ready to test up to level 3.

This year's races: My first tri is the Got the Nerve tri on May 22.  I'm also signed up for the She Rox tri in Philly on Aug 1

Weight Loss: I'm not really too concerned - I'd like to lose 10 pounds, but I don't stress about it.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you all!

Tania

Tania - are you from somewhere around PA?

You know my dear, we won't believe this Norwegian Tan thing unless we see pics. They would have to be of the shirtless variety of course.

Haha!  I don't tan either...my freckles just connect.  I am addicted to sunscreen though.  I wear it every day, and my favorite is Blue Lizard Australian sunscreen with zinc.

That is not a brand I am familiar with. Being in Florida I can see why you would wear it every day. Here in Pennsylvania, not so much. Even in the summer I rarely wear it.

Yes, I know that I should. I make sure the kids have it on. I'm just not real good at doing it for myself.

ceilidh - 2010-04-12 2:56 PM So folks, What training is on tap for this week (assuming all our weeks go as planned)?

I am trying to figure out what, if any, training plan I am going to use now that the 1/2 is over. I have an uphill run race to train for. Obviously I need to do hills. I also need to get some quality biking and ANY swimming in as well. This week starts the biking and strength for real.

I get to go to the dentist!!  All stinky too because I am going to go biking first.  They are going to love me.

Other than that I am following the sprint 3x 16 week plan.  I like it so far.

The zinc is the actual sun blocker. It is the stuff of the old lifeguard "white nose" syndrome. Nowadays they can make it so the zinc is not white looking.
I wear SPF 100 Neutrogena with helioplex. Told by my dermatologist that that is the only formulation that really blocks both A and B UVA. I have had two friends die of melanoma that would have been preventable

PUT THAT SUNSCREEN ON!!!!!

Ok when I am on the beach in NC I do use SPF 15 for the first few days, then 8 after that. Here in PA I don't use it much though. I will work on that this summer Robin.

Oh ugh - I am the worst at remembering sunscreen at home, even though I am pretty fair and burn easily.  I'm great about doing it on vacation (to the point where I come back pasty white and people wonder if I really went away).  The joke is, when I was a kid, I'd get a good burn at the beginning of the summer and then get pretty dark afterwards because of my really weird mixed heritage.

I am in a giving mood today mentee's

So here is BT 101 brought to you by the letter A and the number 4

You have all successfully found the mentor program, way to go

Tri Talk - where you go to discuss training, ask tri or bike questions, what have you. If you haven't ventured in there yet go stick your toes in, get used to the water. Most of the people in there are helpful. You do on occasion come across some heated discussions with very different points of view on topics. Don't take anything personally. Everyone has an opinion, you just have to decide which one is right for you.

Race Reports - this is where you can read the reports of races people have just completed. I enjoy this section right after an IM. There are some very inspirational stories, and you can learn from others journeys.

Classifieds - here is where people sell their triathlon gear. some of it is new, some used, buyer beware

Gear reviews and questions - people can review products they've used or ask questions about products they have

Athena & Clydesdale Triathletes - these are triathletes that are for women - over 150 lbs, and men over 200 I believe. Some races have an Athena and Clydesdale division, some do not

Challenge Me - This is where the monthly challenges are. Usually near the end of a month someone will suggest a new challenge. The peach challenge has been running for several months now. With that challenge you want every day in your blog to have some sort of workout. The other challenges usually get broken up into teams with certain goals. Sometimes you have 1 goal to meet for the month, that you set, sometimes it can be up to 4. D001 usually runs these, beware of the taser. This is where the Ghoulies came to be.

Nutritional Cafe - food discussions, some recipes sometimes

Cup Of Joe - enter at your own risk. This is the non triathlon section of BT. There are frequently political and religious debates, The Men and Women of BT threads full of pictures, and TAN. TAN is a Thread About Nothing.

I didn't hit all of the threads here, but the main ones. If you have any questions just raise your hand.

Okay Ghoulie Mentees and Mentors
Lecture from Robin:

Go to the store ASAP. Purchase TWO BIG bottles of waterproof, sweatproof SPF 30 Sunscreen.
(Yes, TWO bottles. You will need them. Yes they are expensive. They beat the heck out of cancer)

When you get up in the morning, brush your teeth, wash your face and PUT ON SUN SCREEN. Make it a habit! Put it on your neck and ears, too!

After you work out. PUT ON SUNSCREEN.

ransick - 2010-04-12 9:25 PM Now that it is warm, they probably wouldn't notice.

I can't find it in the stores.  I have to order it off Amazon.

What does the zinc do?

Good, we need you to be around for a very loooooong time!

That would be me. I'd burn once, maybe in May, then tan the rest of the summer.

My sister has a bit of a darker complexion to begin with. She used to lifeguard at an outside pool in the summer. By August she was as brown as my Doc Martens.

Now that I have found the spray on stuff, I will endeavor to do better.  It seems to run much less from sweat and it a huge improvement over smearing the tubed stuff all over my big body.

On the other hand, I like being darker than my half greek and half italian wife.  It sort of spins her world a little bit out of orbit to have her normally pasty white husband be darker than her.  Tongue out

I use the spray on stuff for the kids. I can cover them a lot faster and they are kids, their attention spans are short.

Hey!!!  Me too.   My great grandma was black dutch, and the rest of me is irish.   I look irish till ive been in the sun once.  Then I look alittle more ethnic........  My little girl was significantly darker than my wife when she was born and tans as quick or quicker than I do.  I make soooo much fun of the wifey!
