SAWFISH50 - 2010-04-19 6:59 AM Well I bought MTB shoes and have MTB pedals on my road bike so If I switch pedals on my MTB I'll probably try the 2 sided pedals.

Dual entry pedals for a MTB are a neccesity in my opinion.

That is cool. Congratz to her on the great progress.   I use a combination of scale and Bodyfat calipers. It is not near that accurate, but does a great job of tracking progress and letting me know if I need to make adjustments.  Since November I have lost 30 LBS. I started with a BF in the 30 to 35% range and I weighed 195# Now Im at 17 to 18% and weigh 165#.  So rough math puts me at about 35 pounds of Fat loss and 5 pounds of Musscle gain.. that sound about right??

SAWFISH50 - 2010-04-19 6:26 AM Hey about clipless pedals??  I grew up riding BMX and have never been fond of the idea of being locked into the pedals of my off road bike. I have platforms with toe clips that I keep loose on my MTB and that has even caused me to fall a couple of times when i needed a foot out really quick.  You guys dont find this a problem on a off road bike?

I feel naked without them now!  I did a little bit of mtbing a few months ago on platforms (riding someone elses bike) and felt like I was constantly falling off the bike...  It is actually MUCH easier to quickly release from clipless pedals than it is to get your foot out of a toe-clip and strap style, even if the strap is loose.  Even in a quick unexpected crash, I'm out of the pedal before I even know what I hit, it's just a reflex.  There is a learning curve, and I did hurt myself a few times in the early days of learning to use them, but now I have a hard time riding without them.

That said, if I know I'm entering a stetchy rocky section I'll often unclip my feet before hand and just ride on top of the pedals without clipping in.  Even on my eggbeaters (which have no platform at all) this is pretty easy to do.

So are the egg beaters harder to get use to than a standard clipless MTB pedal?  Do they use the saem standard small shoe clip as other Pedals?

I rode with them a couple times so take my opinion for what it's worth.  I think they are easier to get used to than spd's becuase they are easier to get into.  Getting out is similar.  They use a similar clip than spd's but not exactly the same.

Bikes...

I have a Specialized Sirrus Sport.   A hybrid, with slicks & toe cages.  My commuter bike & for riding with kids.   Sometimes ride it to work in summer.

Roadie...Cannondale Synapse, with ultegra components.  Synapse tends to be less aggressive than some road bikes.  Very nice bike.

Tri... Cannondale Slice.  Getting pedals put on & will pick up this week.  Can't wait to try my new toy!!!

I use bike computer on roadie.  Also Garmin 310XT on wrist.

For TT bike, putting Garmin cadence meter on & will use 310XT either on wrist or mounted.

As opposed to many of you, not a mountain biker.  used to the street/roads...probably from my harley days!

Do you attach 305 to bike or your wrist?

No.  The Garmin Edge 305 mounts to the bike.  I use a 90mm stem and it fits perfectly mounted to the stem.

I thought your referring to forerunner.  You have the "Bike garmin"...Ahhh

brick94513 - 2010-04-19 1:52 PM Hydrostatic body fat calculation was pretty cool.  Imagine a large stainless steel bathtub.  The bottom is supported by cables and functions as the scale.  You lie prone in about 18" of water with a weight on your lower back.  You exhale, then put your head under water, and continue to exhale until you can't blow anymore bubbles.  They repeat the test three times, then use a calculation based on height, weight, and correction for dead space air in the lungs.  The test provides you with your lean muscle mass weight, body fat weight, percentage of body fat, and your resting metabolic rate in calorie expenditure.

My test results showed 7.2% body fat or 10.6 pounds of adipose tissue.  Resting metabolic rate is 1,832 calories.  So, my normal consumption of about 3,500 to 4,000 calories a day was pretty much on target after adding for normal activity and exercise.

Interesting stuff.  Don't that have that available locally.

7.2%...I just called your local Burger King & left a tab for you to have a double whopper once a day until you get above 15%.

*whispers under breath* Congrats!

Alright, I wondering if I'm just a big baby.  So, on my ride today, I hit some new high speeds on a couple of descents.  The one descent was probably over a mile and I hit 45 MPH before I decided to started tapping the brakes.  Bike handled really well though. No speed wobbles.  I just got a little worried about the speed and the debris and gravel on the shoulder of the road.

Opinions?  Baby or justified?  Have you guys carried these speeds on your road bikes?  Let me have it!

Your Bike...

Do you have one yet?  More than 1?  What brand, type, etc.  I note many of you have posted lots of bike porn already.

Does everyone clipless peddles?  Anyone not taken the plunge yet?

Do you "measure" bike output?  Either with bike computer, GPS, etc?

Enquiring minds want to know?!?!?

just picked mine up this weekend Smile.  1 bike, kestrel talon tri SL.  i went w/ clipless also, haven't ridden it off the trainer yet, going to try some hill ascents tomorrow, might wipe out then :D.

i have a cadence sensor and 305 quick release on the way that i will use in addition to my HRM to monitor output.  i am going to research more on training with/measuring power as i am a geek by nature and like to quantify things w/ numbers.  i suspect i will try to score an edge 500 within the next 30-60 days.

Woke up to sunshine... YES!  Decided to do the H56/Ted Williams run to the beach and back.  Nice 20+ miles with some hills followed by a quick run to make the legs get used to waking up.

Tim - I dont think your a baby.  One little mishap and any of us could loose months of training and equipment invetsment and miss a race due to injury (oh' yeah, and miss work too).  I hit 39 mph today on a descent and was getting a wee bit nervous myself (about the other yahoos on the road).  I could have kept going faster but got pelted in the eyes by road FOD so feathered it down.  Thank you eyewear!

I pretty confident i'd have hit the brakes too.  I'll never know around here we would have to have a hill big enough to get that kind of speed on.

I have hit that speed.  Depends on the situation.  Like it to be straight hill, with little gravel.  I like knowing what is ahead of me & hence, taking a turn is scary.  Although you can lean the bike into it & it will probably make it, the unknown is the road gravel, oncoming traffic, taking the corner a little sharp etc.  I am too old for more broken bones!!!  Leaving my skin on the road for a mile, is not appealing either.

All that being said, good visibility Good road, Give 'er!!!!!

It is a thrill at that speed thoughSmile

So know...you were not being a baby, you were being prudent.

OK.... I did a 300K last spring in the hills of NC on my long wheel base recumbernt (Easy Racers Gold Rush if anyone's interested).  Anyway, it took me about 17 hours. At one point I was screaming down the side of a mountain ....stopped looking at my bike computer when I hit 52 MPH. Oh yeah..... and it was at night using a head lamp and a headlight. Talk about your pucker factor.....

I wouldn't even consider it on my Kestrel.  IMHO... JUSTIFIED.
