garrunning - 2011-01-05 4:29 PM J I love the bike workout you put up for long rides, can't wait to do that one once it warms up.

Jarrod,

You don't have to follow my workout.  I didn't get it from anywhere...it's just how the ride ends up going based on the route and regrouping spots...some places are more suited for going hard, and some places are better off riding easy.  The main thing though is that you mix it up.  That will get you more benefit than riding at the same effort for 2-3 hours.  That being said, riding at the same effort is eventually how you want to race...so there is a time and place for those type of rides...but those are just baseline tests...not how the way you should be trying to improve IMO.

Prince of Denmar - 2011-01-05 10:43 PM do yall like tacobells? or what kind?
  hehe

Fish tacos from Encinata Mexico!  That's the first place I had them and they were absolutely amazing!  A local place tried to make them for a while but they weren't any thing close to what I tasted in Mexico.

Got a good 8+ hours of sleep last night.  Made a huge difference.  I was dosing off at my desk yesterday afternoon...but I did have a big lunch...my boss took me out for an end of year thing...so I didn't hold back.

Hopefully going for a 8ish mile run after work.  Might have to cut it short if my calf bothers me though.  It cramped up really bad last night at the end of masters class and was one of those "lingering" cramps that I can still feel a little bit today.  I was certain I would cramp up again while I was sleeping...but luckily I didn't.

melbel1038 - 2011-01-06 8:34 AM I ALSO slept better last night.  Today I hit the gym before work and did a treadmill 5k and PR'd LOL.  Then I wanted to swim 1500 meters but only made it 900 because my foot kept cramping up and the last lap I literally had to dog paddle over to the ladder and get out.  Prolly the hard run before hand.  Happy though!

Yup...same here.  I normally do a 3 mile easy run on the treadmill before my masters class.  Yesterday I was feeling ambitious, so I started cranking it up.  I did the last 2nd mile at about a 8ish minute pace, and the last mile at a 7ish minute pace...where normally I just run the whole thing at 9:30 pace.

I'm pretty sure that's what caused my cramp.  It was the first time in a long time that I tried to run hard.  So it will be back to mostly easy runs for me again...LOL.

melbel1038 - 2011-01-06 9:06 AM ok I've been here for a year and keep seeing everybody talking about JorgeM's training plans.  Where do I find them??

http://jorgepbmcoaching.blogspot.com/

It's on his blog.  The prep week workouts and week 1 through week 9 are posted around every Saturday.  So you will have to keep clicking on "older posts" to find the older workout plans for each week.

There are also links under "Cycling Program v3.0" that explains his program, and has further instruction on how to interpret his workouts, perform tests, and calculate your training zones.

He also has an ongoing thread in the Challenge Forum where he or anyone else doing the program can answer questions you have.

I did just finished the first 2 prep weeks, and skipped week1 (which is the test week).  I already have a guage on what my critical power already is...so I just jumped to week 2.   Ideally, you want to be pretty fresh for the tests...and I wasn't fresh this week.

I make my own - ground beef and black bean, very spicy.  I eat it on greens.  The rest of my family eat the filling on flour or corn tortillas.

Dirk & Melanie:  Thanks for the swimming advice.  I am going to continue to ride my bike, increasing my mileage.  Running, not a problem.  Swimming, yeah, gotta practice that.  So, for a first tri which would you choose?

400 meter swim • 10K bike • 5k run
This is the perfect event for athletes new to triathlon or as a season opener for longer distance races in the summer.

If you think you can handle the second one...especially the swim, I would go for that one.

I had a good fitness/training base when I did my first tri (750m/11mi/3.6mi) and I really enjoyed it.  I'm doing the same race again this year.

I'm strongest on the bike...so for me personally, a 10k bike would be too short for my liking.  But I think it's a great intro distance race.  Probably something you may do just once...and never do again though.

Got a 8.2 mile run in after work.  Legs finally feel back to normal after my December marathon.  That cramp I had last night didn't bother me during the run...but I still feel it when I stretch it out.

My Friday Was yesterday.  But then I work 4-10 hr days every week and have a day weekend every weekend, barring storm or other emergency work.

My plan for today and the rest of the weekend is a 2500 yd swim followed by a 5-6 mile run this morning and a 1hr long trainer ride tomorrow to round out my recovery week.  Next week I am back at the hard training again and will most likely start adding a 4th run to my weekly running schedule.  It will be a short easy run to start but probably escalate to a shrt tempo run after a few weeks.  I am thinking the distance will be 2-3 miles for the first few weeks but only increase to 3-4 miles for the tempo run once I have get used to the additional miles again.

I am planning on doing 6 workouts over the weekends, at least for a while.  In early March, when we have more daylight, I plan to start base building my run for a HM in May/June and keep the build up to included a marathon on Sept. 17 (Air Force).

was asked to play a soccer game last night.   had to sacrifice my run...

I was looking at the race calendar last night and theres a HM on April 10. and its on!
I don't think I will follow a plan. just put run volume up,
theres plenty time to train. goal will probably be a sub 1:45.

Today I should be doing a run at lunch then coming home for a trainer ride...a LONG TRAINER RIDE!!

I'm helping my dad on a construction side job this weekend, so I son't be able to do my normal long ride.  So I decided to move it to tonight...on the trainer...yuck.  We'll see how long I actually stay on though.

I still may sneak in a 8 mile run Sunday morning...but I'll have to start before 5am in order to be back at the job site in time.  We'll see.

I got my workouts in almost as scheduled.  I hit the pool for 2700 yards, which is 200 more than I had planned.  No big deal, I just did 200 yards drilling extra.  Although I did do 1 extra 100 during the main set.   The run was faster than planned but it didn't feel bad.  I didn't look at my my watch much and after I checked the data I was surprised to see the pace I kept.  My HR data seems a bit higher than it should have been too but it makes sense knowing I was running slightly faster than planned.

I am with J.  The longer distance on the bike would make the race more fun for me.  A 6 mile bike wouldn't even allow me time to get into it.  I probably wouldn't feel like I hit a good peak for riding.  The swim would require more training but that shouldn't be much more.  It looks like you have pretty good fitness so I doubt that will be an issue.  I am planning to do a sprint race this year just to see how fast I can go for a short race.

What are your goals for racing this year?  Are you just looking to complete some races or do you have targeted finish times or placements?
