Ok thanks ... I'd already put a checklist together and am going by this.  Your suggestion is something we already use when going skiing ... completely stop and look at the gear that'ws laid out - beginning with the head and work down ... helmet, goggles, camelpack, gloves, etc.  So I've done this drill with each race leg and think I've got everything.  Race begins at 10:00 and I plan to be there @ 8:30 - 9:00, walk around, watch the other athletes, be sure where to come in and go out, etc.

I spent quite a bit  of time today working on T1 and T2 ... how to lay stuff out in the order I need to put it on, put on while walking away, etc.

One more item ... sweet looking bike.

Good Luck Dorm. I'm getting excited for you! Have a great race.

Luna- congrats on the race. Sorry I didn't post this sooner. Been crazy busy and dh is out of town so I'm a single parent all week. Much harder- lol.

Gary- the bike is great. Still trying to get it all working together but I just love my bike. And I love your new ride. It looks like a mean racing machine- ;-). One day when I grow up, I'll get a tri bike-lol. Course I think I better learn this road bike first- haha.

Marcie- glad you are finally feeling better. I hate working out feeling bad. It's like torture.

I've been working on my jogging and I think maybe slightly improving- yay! I have slowed down to almost a crawl but I can jog for an hour straight when I do that, and my heart rate stays in the right zone. Of course I can walk at a way faster pace but at least I'm jogging. I'll gradually increase my pace and see what happens. The cardiologist gave me the go ahead to train which was good news, but said he isn't sure how the heck I'm able to do all that I do with the heart damage I have, which was not so good news. Apparantly it's pretty severe and has worsened some- so we'll see what the future holds. For now though, I'm still going to be an Iron Girl in May- lol.

Dorm - How did it go?

Hey all!

Managed about an hour on the road before heading off to DS' soccer games.  Training this week took a hit due to work and a cold but hoping next week is better.  Trying for a long run tomorrow to kick it off.

Hey All ... it's over and done with and the day could not have been more fun, beautiful weather, challenging and all. It was a great experience, and the finish was awesome with a lot of already finished participants lining the sidewalk egging you on.  And Gary, I looked every photographer, right in the camera with a thumbs up sign!

The race report is posted under well ... race reports - Azalea.

Final time was 1:30:31 ... I absolutely did my best and you'll see from my comments in the race report there are things to do differently next race.  Overall the time was somewhat disappointing but it is what it is.

My advice to our group is:

  • Do your training in 'real' situations; i.e. the spinning cycle and/or treadmill are 70% effective as to what it's really like on the outside.  So get outside and bike and run.
  • Focus more training time on the bike-run legs as these have the greatest impact on time.
  • Keep everything as simple as absolutely possible
  • Make sure your gadgets work and tell you what you need to know before the race
  • Work on your transitions a loooott before the race and keep these really, really simple.
  • Work in a few bricks wherein you transition from a 10m bike to run to experience the affects between the bike to run segments

So for those in the group where it's still cold weather, work your butts off between now and your race, have fun and simply do your best.

I also posted some pics here ... password is 'triathlon'

Dorm - read your RR, very nice.  Congrats on getting that one done!  Don't be disappointed with your time, lots of things to learn and prepare for.  Goal for your next is to work out the details, keep training hard, and improve on the next one.

Managed a 6.5 mile run this morning around LSU lakes.  Knee started bothering me at the end and shut it down, was hoping for 8 miles.  Hoping I can get to the pool this week.

Hope everyone is feeling better and back at their training!

Dorm,

Congrats on the race. I guess time is relative- as I'll be thrilled if my time is close to that for my Iron Girl. I'll be happy if I'm under two hours-lol. My goal truly is to finish.

Can't wait to read the rr. Heading over there now.

Good job,

Shelly

It stopped snowing, I stopped traveling, and now am getting my runs and swims in. Tomorrow is the 1st 70 degree in what feels like 5 years. That will get me on the bike tomorrow after work.

Randy - glad the training is going well

Managed a short swim and an hour on the trainer.  May be I can get this training kickstarted after last weeks lack luster performance.

Slowly getting the bike setup.  Garmin sensor on, started to replace the wornout white bar tape, etc.  Going to order a wheel cover for the back soon.

Did another Masters swim class last night. If you are not in one of these groups, I highly recommend it. My swimming style could best be described as a rock having a siezure. If I did not drown, it was a good swim. Having been able to look at good swimmers and their tecneique, getting a few pointers, and getting pushed a bit is helping a lot. During the two classes, I have put put in my two longest swims EVER. 2700 yards, and 3000 yards, and feel pretty good about it. I still have a long way to go, but I way ahead of schedule and can concentrate more on biking and running.

Hey all!

Just back from a set of heart scan tests. With all of the heart disease, etc in my family (only 1 of 2 remaining males on my Dad's side of the family) I try to get these regularly.  Great story:
They have me lie down on a table.  Comfie pillow and I am tired.   While they are attaching sensors (whatever they are called) and checking things I close my eyes and decide to try to nap.  The nurses/techs are telling me things but I am blissfully napping.  Finally one nurse asks "Are you a runner?".  "Yes" (didn't think correcting her to say "Triathlete" would get me very far).  She says "That explains it, your resting heart rate is 42".

Good living is finally paying off.

Hey all!!!

Hopefully nice weather is being enjoyed by all!  Been nice here and hoping for a long ride in the morning.  I really need to get a longer ride in and haven't had time.  The DST shift hasn't helped as my Saturday mornings are usually my long ride time and now those can't start until close to 7am.

How is everyones training?  I will have to go back to the list and see when the next races are coming up.

Hey!
Where did everyone go?

Had my first bike crash today.  Totally my fault and I need to adjust the brakes so this doesn't happen again.  After a quick trip back to the house for a minor repair I managed 45+ miles at a great clip.

Fit - Are you going to the swim clinic tomorrow?

Fit - Are you going to the swim clinic tomorrow?

Gary- Unfortunately I am not. I don't have a wetsuit yet and there is no way I could stand the temps without it. I am still torn about whether to buy one as I've looked up the water temps of Lake Pontchartrain for May for the last several years. The info I am seeing is water temps over 78 and sometimes over 82. I hate to spend a couple hundred dollars on a wetsuit and then not even be allowed to wear it. I put in a message to GNO Tri club and am waiting to hear what some of the members there say. I also asked at bicycle world which is the official bike shop for NO Ironman and they say no way will it be a wetsuit legal race. He thinks Iron girl is crazy for listing water temps 70-74. So until I decide or it gets warmer, I can't do any OWS.

Hopefully there will be another one before my race. Thanks so much for the info.

Hope you were okay after your crash!  Sounds like it was not major, so that is good.  Nice milage, I can't wait until our weather gets and stays nice so I can get outside!

Made a friend at the Y today who is a part of our town's newly formed Running Club.  I might try to get out and run with them after spring break, will be nice to have others who are about the same speed as me to run with.

Hope everyone is doing well with their training, tomorrow is the first day of spring, we are getting closer to 'official tri season'!

Hey all!
Went to the an OWS clinic today.  Not the original one I planned on.  There was another one earlier in the morning.  Turns out its a lady coach who has a bunch of women she is working with for some upcoming tri.  So it was me and about 9 ladies (and a few husbands in canoes) out there.  We could not measure the distance all that well but we swam at least a mile.  Fog at the start made it hard to see the buoys.

Between yesterday and today I am a bit sore.  Didn't run tonight and will tomorrow night.

Swim - very cool about the running partner, always helpful.

Question for the group:

What brand goggles do you wear?

Hey all. I got in a nice 15m ride on Saturday and hit the Mtn bike hard on Sun.  Temps here are wonderful ... 60*f early mornings over the weekend.

I've scheduled a metabolic test session at my gym tonight, so had to cool it yesterday and today so as to be nice and fresh for the test tonight.

Signed up yesterday for a run-bike-run dualthon on April 9th.  I'll relay this with my daughter who will catch the run legs.

I have the same ones!  In pink and I love them.  They do fog up pretty easily, but its nothing a little spit doesn't fix.
