Hey Team.

I missed you today Smile.

Thanks for the prayers and the thoughts. I will look at the posts and try to reply sometime tomorrow if that is ok. It is getting late, almost midnight and I just got home.

Update: Tough night last night for my Mom, and half the day was spent trying to regulate her heart beat. Things settled down this afternoon and evening for her though. Spent some good quality time with my Mom and my Dad in the hospital room. Not sure what tomorrow will bring but the day ended good. She was feeling good when I left tonight, stayed until she fell asleep, just reading the latest edition of Triathlete Magazine in the room with her. She even kicked me out just before dinner so I could get a run and swim in - my Dad was there so she told me to go enjoy myself - God Bless her. So I was able to get home, have a bite, go for a run in the crappy weather and then head to the pool before going back to the hospital to spend the rest the rest of the night.

Anyway, that is it, just wanted to say hello and let you all know I was thinking about your today and hope you all had great days.

See you tomorrow I hope.

KC

hi all,

I've been reading all the posts, but haven't had much time to come up with coherent (much less witty and entertaining) posts.. but I'm still here... typing this for the second time after the internet ate my first masterpiece. Frown Probably for the best, since I forgot to ask my swimming question, which is now below.

Tim and KC - my thoughts are with you and your loved ones..

I didn't run this weekend.  Mixed rain and snow (it was like slush was falling from the sky) on Saturday and a cold Sunday made me (and my mom, who will be running the half marathon with me) decide that it would be a rest weekend - it really didn't help that we helped each other justify NOT going out... Embarassed  We did go to  a hot power yoga class, though, and my legs were a bit tired after that.

Last night was a good training night - I swam 600 metres, which is 100 metres more than my race will be, biked 5km, then played indoor soccer for an hour.  My legs were not happy with me, but I keep telling them that I know what's best..

Tonight, no training - just obedience classes with the pup. Tomorrow plan is to run and swim, assuming the forecast freezing rain holds off. Yell So much for spring..

Quick lane swim etiquette question - this has happened a few times and I'm never sure what to do.  I usually swim in the "medium" paced lane (as I'm too fast for the "leisurely" lane, but don't quite feel fast enough for the "medium fast" lane). Last night the pool was busy and there were 5 people swimming in my 25m lane.  One of the individuals kept swimming right on people's heels and looking annoyed (although to his credit, he didn't say anything) when we didn't wait for him  to go ahead at the end of each lap.  I think he should have moved over, as the "medium fast" lane was not that much faster than we were (I swam one lap almost shoulder to shoulder with someone in that lane, for the first half, and was still in line with his legs when he finished, so, although he was faster, it wasn't by a huge margin.  My question is - should I have let this guy go ahead? Should he have moved over? The last time, the person in question actually told me I should move to the slower lane, which was the "leisurely" lane and was for people swimming veeerrrryy ssslllooowwwllyy.. I ignored her, thinking that if she wanted to swim faster (we were the only two people in the lane at that swim), she could move over. Am I wrong?

Thanks, and hope everyone is enjoying the short work-week!

Heather

KC - glad to hear your Mom is doing better.

Heather - wish I could help you on that one.  I have discovered I am pretty lucky and don't ever have to deal with multiple people inlanes since my pool is fairly large and I swim early.  I do have a question though - Do they post average pace times for the lanes or do you have to just gauge by how fast someone is swimming?

I would think that if they were swimming a similiar pace in the next faster lane she should have jumped over there and bothered them.

Also thanks to everyone for the well wishes on my friend.  It was just a mild heart attack and he was supposed to be released today.  Hopefully it was huge wakeup call.

As for me I am slowly losing the battle here to the flu.  It is now 3am on day 4 and I still have stomach cramping and have been running to sit on the toilet every 15 minutes.  I am so frustrated!  I worked so hard training for this marathon and now it is falling apart.  I can't seem to stay hydrated.  I gained back 2 of the 7 pounds when I weighed myself before bed but I guarantee I lost that plus more through the night.  I look literally like skin and bones and have no idea how I will recover for next week.

Scott, great workouts again.  Is 95 your comfort cadence?  I only wish I could keep mine that high, I tend to avg around 75.

Not 95, 88-92.  But I used to be a gear cruncher.  High cadence drills take care of that.   The computrainer also has a program called Spin Scan that actually analyzes the power in the 360 degree spin on each leg and how much of the total power each leg contributes.  I was sloppy at the start of winter.  I started using Spin Scan and found that the 88-90 range was most efficient for me. It puts a wee bit more of the work on the legs rather than the lungs, but that is OK for me.

High cadence drills rock.

KC: I love your mom's spirit!  Sounds just like my mom.

Heather: I am usually the same way as you can tell I don't write a whole lot and far from entertaining, but feel free to post anything you want.  We are here to improve our health and triathlon experience.  I so want to do a hot yoga class but the closes one to me is about 2hrs away.    Nice swim, if your race is 500m don't be afraid to shoot for 1000k a couple time in training if you are up to it.

As for your lane question:  I tend to swim my own pace and let others swim around me or I pass them. Not that I'm trying to be a A$$ but its easier for them if you just hold your line and keep a steady pace.  For him on your heels that is a technique some people practice, if you do a large race your feet get hit about everystroke as the person behind you drafts you. They say that the back person save something like 20% energy as you pull them through the water.  Based off what you said I would stay in your current lane and don't worry about that person, or if you want to be a smart a$% tell him to move to the fast lane if he thinks hes so fast. LOL  Hang in there !

Tim: that stinks, I hope your ok by the weekend so you can get some strength back.  Don't worry about what you cannot control just try to rest and drink.

Scott, between the spin scan and leg ratio are the 2 stats I watch most.  I shoot for around 65 if not I am like you and tend to mash the gears.  I fixed my rt leg being more dominate by hurting my knee lol.  Now  I'm 50/50 lol.

Got my A__ handed to me on the bike yesterday. I havent been pushed like that in a long time it was fantastic. Its was 1hr and 30min of hard work and pain. I wasnt expecting to climb that many hills at that hard of a pace. Max speed 38mph average speed 16mph. There were 8 hills I was pushed to keep it above 12mph...and the end of the ride was a steady climb. I was hurting bad but still pushed myself to run a 5k in 29min. Great brick workout.

I keep telling myself Im going to take a day off from training but I have yet to do that.

Happy training everyone.

Karen it was tough. I lost count of how many times I wanted to slow down and take a break. But like I was told yesterday "how do you know you breaking point until your pushed beyond your limits". So don't sell yourself short. You can do it. You might surprise yourself.I thought I was working hard up until yesterday

Hey Team.

Hope everyone is having a great day. Thanks to everyone for the thoughts and prayers. Got to the hospital early today before work and sat with my Mom for a bit. She seemed to be doing fairly well. I will be back there in about 2 hours and hopefully I will get some good news.

Coach - no more medical maladies for any of us, great idea! How about our cars? My VW Golf is currently having one with a water pump. Just what I needed on the way to work this morning. I am waiting for a call from my dealer to go pick up a loaner so I can get up and see my Mom. Oh well, when it rains it F*&%ing pours LOL. Nice job getting up for the Masters swim by the way.

Karen - nice swimming and great bike story but I think I like Coach's concept better - next time, just show them a gun Laughing. Can you please send me a picture of the sun from your run this Saturday. I don't think I am ever going to see it again based on the weather up here!

Tim - Get Better and stay positive for your marathon! I also hope your friend is ok. Also, great advice on running and how to get through the mental side.

George - nice running - keep pushing yourself and fyi, I am still shoe shopping from Christmas lol.

Caleb - good luck with the move.

Heather - listen to Coach on the lane etiquette thing - I see ignorant people all the time at the college pool but I have become more confident in letting them know how I feel about what they are doing and I even do it nicely sometimes.

Jen - you sound like me but don't be afraid to take a day off once in a while. Nice Biking.

Keith - swim was good and thanks for the PM.

OK - I think I caught up. I am hoping to get a swim in tonight, all depends on how my Mom is but something tells me she will tell me to go Smile

Enjoy the rest of the day.

KC

Folks, a day of rest a week is really important.  We get stronger on rest days, right?  Took my coach a while to get that through my head.  Workouts tear down muscle which rebuild stronger only when we give them time.  One rest day a week, even two, are a must.  Fridays are mine.  They are also mandatory for mental alertness and toughness. And a rest day does not mean a light workout.  It means nothing.

Naps are good too.  During sleep, the body releases healing hormones.  A good night's sleep is important.  Toss in a nap and you get two doses of the hormones. Such a deal.

Take it from someone who has learned to deal with injuries the hard way - rest is an essential part of triathlon.

Thanks, Tim!  This is great coaching!  I did 2.25 miles yesterday on the treadmill.  I kept your advice in mind, thinking about just about everything else except running.  I maintained a constant speed, and just ran.  It also helped that a basketball game was on, so it took my mind away from thinking about my legs.  Well, I did the 2.25 mile without stopping.  Happy about that for sure.  I did find, however, that running on the treadmill felt different than running on the streets.  I wonder how much of that running-without-stopping had to do with running on the machine, which seemed softer and more forgiving.  Does any of you find it easier to run longer on a treadmill than on the road?  Whatever the reason, I'm glad to be seeing the progress.

tmoran80 - 2011-04-19 6:20 PM

Running is all about mental toughness.  If you are constantly thinking about stopping you will want to stop.  Instead focus on your form, breathing, keeping your heart rate down, etc...  I stopped running with headphones 2 years ago so I do even my 20+ long runs without them.  It is almost like meditation.  I become really intune with my body.  I often do find myself thinking about everything but running most of the time.  If your breathing is getting too labored, slowdown, if you feel your heart beating out of your chest slowdown - BUT DON'T STOP   Thats the key.  Keep building up those distances with your weekly long runs and before you know it the mileage your worried about now will be a warmup!

gkao - 2011-04-19 10:14 AM

I ran 3.25 miles yesterday.  I actually was able to do 1.25 miles before getting the need-to-catch-my-breath feeling.  When I first started two weeks ago, I could only run 0.25 miles before needing to walk 0.25 miles, then run 0.25 miles and walk 0.25 miles, etc.)  For the first time, I felt like my desire to stop and walk was more mental than physical.  Because it's starting to be mental for me, what do you guys think of when you're doing these long runs/swim/bike?  I find myself constantly thinking "You've run plenty already, you can stop and rest" and "You said you could stop by the time you run to the sign, but really, you should stop by the time you get to the street 50 yards before the sign."  What are you thinking mentally in order for you to keep going and not let your mind stop you?

Hey George - great work, keep it up. I have attached an article from a web site called running planet and I am sure Coach, Tim and Scott will be able to chime in. To make it more like running outside, make sure you add some incline to your run on the mill - I think, if memory serves me correctly, 1-3% incline will give you a more realistic feel and workout like you are doing it outside and you can watch some basketball Smile.

Wise words Scott. My body is telling me to rest and I promise to listen today. I normally take 1 to 2 days off a week....for rest and family time. It just gets very addicting.

Hey Team - hope everyone had a great day.

Scott - I am mad at you - I read your post earlier when I got home from visiting my Mom and work. You know, the one about napping - thanks a lot, I sat down on the lazy boy for what I thought would be a few minutes before I went to the pool and I just woke up LOL Laughing and missed my swim Frown! Oh well, must be my body talking to me - going to bed, then up early to see my Mom and head to work in my loaner car (VW Bug). Then my stress test tomorrow afternoon. Big day ahead because I plan on getting a great swim in tomorrow night along with a bike and some weights and hopefully my Mom will be home from the hospital.

Have a great night everyone - and go get some rest if you need it zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..............

KC don't even start a new trend with auto trouble!!LOL

Scott I wish I had time to take a nap, I feel so much better after one.  My problem is if I do take one after work I can never go to sleep at night.

Jen: nice ride, after a long day like that it is a great time to either take a day off or do some no impact training ie swimming!

George, tim is our running guru so I would listen to what ever he says.  I train a little different as I have a set mileage and there is no way I am going to cut it short so I just deal with the suffering! :-) might not be ideal but it gets me through the workout.

KC if I'm free that weekend I will have to race you! Only a few hr drive for me.  Is it a sprint or oly?  As for a VW bug, I think you get your man card revoked .. LOL  Tell your mom hi from the sickies!

It appears the group has taken a positive turn lately, no more posts with bad news or illnesses.  Hopefully Tim you will start to feel better soon.  I can't stand stomach bugs and when I get them I feel the effects for weeks.  Take it easy and get well.

The antibiotics seem to be kicking out my infection and I am starting to feel better.  Hopefully i can get this under control.

This is an easy recovery week for me so my volume is down, but the weather has made it hard to get in what has been planned.

I have a couple burning questions I will ask when I get a chance to figure out

Shoot away charlie!!  That's what were here for

I did a half way decent workout with a short (freezing) run, then jumped on the trainer and did about and hour on the bike until leg got alittle sore.  So I went to the basement and did half of the plyo P90x with some core.  Still can't get anything consistent but things are looking better.  I hope Charlie is correct as were all making a turn for the better.   Now if I can just drag my butt out of bed in the am to swim again :-).

George thats great!  The great thing about the treadmill is that you can zone out but I would not use it regularly.  Running outside is gonna help you work on your pacing which I am thinking could be one of your issues.  You might be running too fast and not even realizing it which would explain the winded feeling.  If you have some way to measure distance (GPS watch, measure distance with your car or bike, etc) I would check your time every 1/2 mile to see how your pace is.  You almost have to memorize how it feels.  Once you get it though you can usually gauge quickly if your pace is too fast or too slow.

I've also heard that only training on treadmills can casue injury's.  Don't really have anything to back that up - just info from talking with people.  Could have to do with the surface but I think it has something to do with changing your stride.

Keep up the good work.

Feeling much better tonight.  Finally able to stay hydrated and keep some food in.  Took Dave's advice and got a 1/2 mile walk in.  Gonna take it easy tomorrow and then maybe try either an easy swim or 30 minute run Friday.  just have to see how it goes.

I registered today to volunteer at Ironman Wisconsin as a finish line catcher.  Scott and Dave if you guys finish after 8:00pm maybe you will see my smiling face at the finish lineLaughing.  Looking forward to it and also getting a guaranteed chance to register for 2012.
