Thanks for the  lesson, staying in Spokane at The Davenport Tues and Wed, then off to the CDA resort for 5 nights then after the race off to Whitefish, Montana and some sightseeing at Glacier National Park...I am from North Carolina and have never been to that part of the country so I figured we can see some of it.

Training.... nice swim also this morning, ride Saturday might be on the trainer...40's and windy ...Yeah I am spoiled also, then long run Sunday.

We will all have to get together for a couple practice swims Thursday and Friday race week.

In 2008, I had a similar plan.  We stayed at the resort Thursday - Monday and then drove to Whitefish for a week vacation.  Glacier National, White Water Rafting, some hiking (after the soreness wore off).  Great vacation.  Bring the mosquito repellant.  I didn't realize how bad the mosquitos were up there.

watched the 2011 IM world championships this morning while on my computrainer.  That got me motivated.

Q.  Does anyone have information on the run elevation changes/profile?

*  I'm wondering if the run has hills or is flat

I can tell you there is at least one big hill, if you compare the CDA Marathon map to the CDA IM map, which has a profile, you can see where it is at roughly.  It only shows maybe a couple hundred feet of elevation change bu,t it feels worse than that, at least it did when I ran the marathon last year.  It's not the most level of sections either as it has what I would call a bad drop on the right side as you are running up, and the opposite of course as you are running down.

Mine has said it for 2 days, so far it's done basically nothing here in Spokane.  I saw a few flakes last night and this morning, that's it.

In Coeur d' Alene we got about 4 ". This is more normal than not. There is very little snow in the mountains at this time which is the real factor about how cold the swim is going to be.

Most of it bypassed us!  It started snowing like mad, then all of the sudden the sun was coming through, blue skies then nothing.

Also, agreed on the mountains being the major factor on how cold the swim will be.  We need the snow up there but I really would prefer it to be a bit warmer than last year's reported starting temp.

Hi all! its been a while since I posted but am looking forward to get the training going. Unfortunately I got a nasty respiratory infection and just finsihing the 2nd dose of antibiotics Frown

However I finally got back to running this morning as I have a marathon planned in 5 weeks. Not sure if it is enough time as prior to getting sick I had only gotten up to 12 mile runs. We shall see. Gonna be a tough training cycle for me. I dont mind it but end up stressing a bit trying to find the time. Anyone else stress more about finding the time than actully getting up and doing it?

smithe,

Do you know the percentage of the running course that is pavement or asphalt vs. trail?

Thanks

As I recall it's asphalt the entire way.  There's a sort of human-created dirt trail for a long stretch, running alongside the Centennial Trail.  It seemed a bit uneven to me, but I saw quite a few people on it.

catincolorado, spudone summed it up perfectly.  I ran on the "trail" parts at times during the CDA marathon, it's not ideal, but a nice, short break from the asphalt pounding.

Spudone & Smithe - thanks for the replies.  I was hoping the path along the lake was all trail.  I guess asphalt is better than concrete.

It means potentially really cold water!  Last years start was 54.5 degrees, of course there was still run off from the mountains in August last year!  It will depend on how early the snow melts off the mountains, the longer it's there, the colder it's going to be.

Dumb question of the day:

Is Jan snowfall considered "late" for that region?  When I think of late snowfall that could mean things for the water temp, I would think that would be April/May combined with low air temps so the snow doesn't melt until late.

Not a dumb question.  Jan is not late snowfall, we have had snow in the area in June before, that is a super rare thing though.  The part that really matters is what happens in the mountains, if there is snow up there, even though it's nice down low, the water will be cold.

The Inland NW will have snow through March and then sometimes get it in May, June, or even July.  That's one thing that I DON'T MISS having moved away from the area!

Here in Texas, we don't usually have to worry about snow.

My folks live in Keller, seems like they have had their fare share in semi-recent history.  Of course it doesn't last.

It ices about once a year, enough to keep people off the roads, and "snows" half an inch or so a couple times a year, but it never sticks.

Today it was 77*

They keep asking us to move down there, especially my mom. I think it's a possibility once all of our kids are out of the house, last one is 17, so a couple more years maybe. I love this area but I am tired of cold winters.
