stevebradley - 2011-12-30 8:22 AM HOKIEJEFF again - GREAT article on the breath/intensity "zones"! I can never remember that stuff, and it's gotten worse with each year that elapses since I had my last (and first....) testing done --- about a decade ago. (Could it be that long?!?) I have prited out the article and will afix it near the computer for future reference. Many thanks! Also, it was nice to see me "grouped" with Gordo.....although we both know the difference is of the silk-purse-sow's-ear variety!

Your welcome.  Re grouping:  I truly meant it.  Your both great guys.

stevebradley - 2011-12-30 11:02 AM HOKIEJEFF - Nice selection you have for a TT bike! My LBS stocks Cerveklo and Felt, and swears by both. I have a friend who loves his Dulce. I think I have heard very good things about the Slice 5, but know nothing about the Specialized. As for fit.... This probably isn't news to you, but not all bikes are creeated at all equally for different physiognomies. When I ahd my best-ever comprehensive fiit at Fit Werx in Vermont back in '03, i learned that several companies made bikes that would work well for me odd shape (very long arms and torso, and even at 6'2", comparatively short legs - at least for one who is my height). Fortunately for me, the Cervelo I had at the time was one of the models that suited me just fine. (And enough so that when I updated a few years ago, i stuck with Cervelo.) So, make sure that both bike shops will spend LOTSe getting you fit just right. Serrota is the most common fitting system, but many great fitters have gone through Dan Empfield's F.I.T. system. Mostly, you want to feel that you were measured extensively, and lots of picayune adjustments were made. I guess one can carry this to extremes in what they are demanding, but you definitely don't wnat the seller to move the saddle up-and-down a cm or two. Have fun with the whole process!!

Looking forward to the process.

Will you come to my house and teach my husband to cook like that?

stevebradley - 2011-12-29 8:09 AM TRINA - Sounds like a superb xmas -- especially the goodies you received. You're yet another one here who got just about enough stuff to justify opening their own tri store! Early fall HIM? How about mid-fall? I'm thinking of Beach2Battleship, in Wilmington, NC. That would satisfy your interest in saltwater and flatness, both on the run and the bike. I think it has its own website (www.beach2battleship.com?), but if not it can be viewed at www.setupevents.com. The race has run 3 or 4 years now, and features a swim in a protected channel and that is timed to coincide with an incoming tide; so, swim times are FAST! Someone goofed in '10, and the swim was not at all current-assisted. Moreover, that year it was held on something like Nov 12, so many people got very cold. This past season, however, extra care was taken to reading the tide charts correctly, AND the date was moved back a few weeks -- maybe Oct 30, or maybe even about Oct 15; can't remember. The bike heads west out of Wimington and then returns, a sweet one-looper. It is just about 100% flat, but wind (your friend!!) can be a factor. As for the run, it is also out-and-back for the HIM crowd, and winds through Wilmington's apparently-pretty streets. It crosses a couple of bridges, which give it its only hint of hills. There are two transition zones, so some thought has to be given to navigating those, but if you went with family you could be driven to the swim start and not have to fuss with shuttle buses and such. Overall, the race has a great rep, and the price is very, very right -- a nice switch from the overcharging of the 70.3 races! As for 70.3, though, there is Augusta, usually at the end of Sept. The swim is also current-assisted, but in a river. Bike is hillyish, but benefits from a long descent for the final ten miles or so. The run is falt, two loops through the town, but can be hot and tedious. I will think about others; right now I am mostly blanks. I can come up with lots that are further-flung from you, but few have saltwater swims. The one at Myrtle Beach is in saltwater, maybe in a channel as with B2B. It is put on by the Ultramax people, and for a couple of years was the USAT long-course championship events (but not restricted to athletes shooting for that honor). I think it is called the Halfmax Championship. Anyhow, google Myrtle Beach half-iron halfmax, and you should be rewarded. Meanwhile, i will continue thinking!

Steve - Thank you so much! Your description of the B2B got me all excited and I had to steady myself against the kitchen counter. Seriously, I swooned. Sounds like the perfect race for me. I will check it out! Augusta has me a bit worried in terms of the hills and possible heat. I so appreciate your input!

stevebradley - 2011-12-29 8:49 AM TRINA again - I don't think Kansas 70.3 has been plagued by heat in its four or so years, and it is generally well-regarded except by people who niether figure Kansas is flat, nor who look at the bike profile to see how rolling the course really is. Oops! My sense is that for folks who have trained well for it, it is a very good race, and maybe even "fast". Plus, being near to Lawrence is a huge bonus, and then there is always KC itself, not all that far away. Great city, KC!!

Steve -

I guess I'd need to figure out how to train well for Kansas 70.3. I, too, assumed Kansas was flat as a board (I should know better as everyone thinks Oklahoma is flat, but we actually have beautiful mountains in the SE part of the state). But in my defense I've driven quite a bit of Kansas, and it sure seems pretty flat to me. Oh well, those rollers always surprise me. They can pop-up anywhere and I need to quit being such a sissy about hills. It's just that running really takes it out of me and if I have any hope of finishing a HIM I need the bike to be as easy as possible.

Wind is always a factor for me, but I've taken my bike out since the addition of the aerobars and it certainly makes a difference speed and effort-wise when riding into a headwind. Kansas would be ideal as it is close, and you are right - Lawrence and KC are awesome! However....I've been to NC once and fell in love with it. It'd be nice to visit again and this time with my husband, as the only time he has been was when he and his friends accidentally drove too far east on I-40 missing their turnoff in Tennessee to go white water rafting. I've never figured out how one accidentally dives two hours into a different state, but that's another story altogether. (I think they were busy talking and didn't notice for like....two hours).

I've read where others have gone off their diet this month and I bow my head in shame as I have, too. I've gained 4 lbs! Certainly going to be precise in keeping track of what goes into my mouth once Jan 1 arrives!

Also, I think there were a couple of people who stated they find swimming cathartic. I couldn't agree more!! I absolutely love getting in the pool (or lake, ocean, etc). If I'm having a really bad day all I have to do is get in the water and it all seems to melt away

Oh, and before I forget: A friend of mine has invited me to go on a 5 day mtn biking excursion in the Grand Canyon in June. We will get a good workout in every day. Think this will interfere with my HIM training (assuming that I do the B2B in October, and don't hurt myself during the mtn biking)?

Got my fingers crossed on early fall (late October) REV 3 HIM in my neck of the woods (Southwest Florida).  REV 3 has already publicly annouced it but ran into some problems with the original venue in Sarasota.  Looks like it is going to be moved to Venice, FL from the ramblings on slowtwitch.  Anyhow, nice Gulf of Mexico swim, bike and run flat as a pancake and temperature/humidity should not be too bad that time of year.

Thanks, Jeff. I will also check that one out, too!

I'm a believer in Cervelo. I started out with a nice Scott from REI, but after I caught the Tri bug I had to have a TT bike so I got fitted at Fitness Fanatics, my fabulous local bike shop in Spokane WA, and ended up with a P3. I got spoiled with the carbon frame and wanted a higher end road bike for commuting and logging miles so I added an R3 to the stable. When the weather is good I can hardly wait to get on my bike after work.

Get a good it ting before you get your heart set on a specific bike. You don't want to end up with a cool and pretty bike that doesn't fit and you dread riding.

Tyler - Thanks for the heads up on the Cervelo, that is an awesome deal. I wish I knew someone that was looking to buy a bike then I could get a realyl good deal. (Find a $3200 cervelo tell that person that I can get them a deal for $3000 but with $1000 off I would only have to pay $2200 for their bike giving me $800 to use towards my bike along with my $1000. So if I found a $3200 bike then I would only have to come out of pocket $1400. SWEET).  Hey about the NOLA race, you know its going to be crazy down there this year.  There was talk about combining the HIM and the 5150 together to make one big race.

Generic - Great job on the swim and also winning the arguement against yourself, those and the ones with the wife are the ones I always back down on and walk off in defeat. Great job.

Steve- Yep, I bought a Road ID last year and lost it in a race, so I ordered a new one which got lost in the mail, so Road ID sent me another one. Well 4 days after I received the replacement I got the lost one in the mail. They let me keep both and I love it since its the one with the PIN that stores all my info online.  I love that so when I travel I can update my contact info to where I will be staying.  I will not leave my house on a run, bike, swim or gym without it.  If I kick the bucket I want them to know who I am since all my fingerprints, dental records and anything else that can point to who I am has been wiped out of the Govt database. Oh and my name is Pedro Gonzales.

Jo - I hope your knee is doing better. Nothing worse then getting injured when you are getting started.  Just like others suggested, take it easy and gradually build on your training. I learned the hard way last year being I was a newbie to tri racing, heck I was a newbie to anything that did not involve sitting on the couch watching TV.

Hokie Jeff - Do you know where the REV3 half is going to be? Im bouncing between REV3 in Florida and Augusta HIM.  I like the Rev3 race since it gives me longer to traing and be ready, The family rather go to Florida instead of Augusta GA, also I have heard nothing but good things about the Rev3 organization.  The only positive about Augusta is the swim.  If you hear where it's going to be held, please let me know.

So what is everyone doing for New Years? Me and the family are going to Gulf Shores Beach, they are having a Happy Noon Year party. I like that since it will be at noon, we dont drink and there is lots of stuff for the kids to do, oh and I cant stay up till midnight.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and Happy New Years to everyone.

Jito,

Originally they were going to do the swim on Lido Beach with the bike/run on Longboat Key both in Sarasota, FL.  Hence the following press release:

http://rev3tri.com/news/revolution3-triathlon-announces-new-2012-race-in-florida/

Then things got political and I think REV 3 was not able to get the OK with city council or something like that.  There is some juicy stuff on slowtwitch.com between the folks from REV 3 and a local race director who has a olympic event on the same day.  If you are interested in reading the juicy details (kind of amusing) they can be found here:

http://forum.slowtwitch.com/forum/Slowtwitch_Forums_C1/Triathlon_Forum_F1/Rev3_Florida_2012_P3680731-2

Anyhow, the date is October 28th.  Looks like the swim and transition areas are going to be at Sharkey's on the Beach in Venice.  I'm still waiting for the offical press release from REV 3 - I think it will happen in early Jan.  Personally I think Lido/Longboat Key would be better but they are both good places for the race.  Plus the REV 3 folks are classy folks so they will put on a good race/time.

Man.... We are one busy group! I finally have felt well enough to start a bit of training, my training schedule starts Monday but I did get in a CrossFit class and the a half mile swim, mostly doing drills with 1 200 yd timed effort. After not swimming in over a month I feel like I am totally lost... A fish out of water so to speak! Anyway, I hope that the feel comes back quickly as I start to add the swimming routine to my off season work. My chest cold has finally subsided to a mildly annoying cough. Trying to plan my race season and realized I made a bit of a mistake, I had done the Pawling tri this past season and was planning to do it again. I signed up for it a couple of days ago as it fills fast. The as I was marking my calendar I realized that the REV3 HIM aqua bike is the following day! The Pawling tri is a sprint so I may do both, what does the group think of that plan? Neither one would I consider my 'A' race for the year. Also, people have mentioned Chi running and thought it may be helpful for me with my bad knees and propensity to heel strike... I just can't find a workshop in my neck of the woods here in NY. Do you think it worth while to just try and set up some sessions with a Chi-running coach, if I can't find a workshop? Thanks!

stevebradley - 2011-12-30 10:07 AM Getting closer to being caught-up! Will the "catch" happen tonight? (In bike-racing terms, usually it's the peloton that catches the breakaway rider; for me, it's the solo rider trying to reel in the breakaway peloton that you all have emerged as! )

LOL, been off for a few days, and am 12 pages behind. This is the fast group.

STEVE,

How could you miss my HUGE milestone on page 12???  Laughing  I actually RAN one FULL km on Saturday - the first since last February!   Not much when I compare it to Johanne's big 20 miler coming up, I'm afraid.

Anne

Anne,

1 km or 20 miles, it's all the same in the grand scheme of things! Getting done our challenge of the week is the best

Johanne,

I hadn't read all the posts since the beginning so I took a look at your blog to see why you were running 20 miles.  Goodness - your 2011 and 2012 schedules are VERY impressive.  You've got both a marathon and an Ironman scheduled plus a lot of other stuff.  Busy lady.

I also see we both have daughters named Laura in college (Ours attends UW-Madison and is off to the Rose Bowl on Saturday)

Denise

Thanks Denise! It was a good year and looks busy on paper but I was pretty careful with spacing things out. I got a little addicted to all of this

My Laura goes to Loyola Marymount U. and they built their first float for the Rose Bowl Parade this year. I grew up in SoCal and it was a college ritual to sleep overnight in the gutters and watch the parade the next day. Those were the 'younger' days! Laura is leaving in a few days for a semester abroad in Paris. She's very excited.

Excellent workout this evening. week three of 0 to 1650:

1 x 400

1 x 200

4 x 100

4 x 50

1200 total, average per 100 was 2:01

I PROMISED myself I would either run for an hour or not at all. So I got on the dreadmill and did the left/right/repeat thing. After about 35 minutes I started telling myself it was ok to bag it since it was the second part of a brick. I argued about it with myself for about 25 minutes while I ran. Never did resolve the argument but son of a gun I knocked out the whole run.

Great job winning that mind game!

Moved over to the spin bikes -- they just got REALLY nice new ones at our local Y -- and did 20 minutes of spinning there.  Watts read 140 which probably means that I suck as a cyclist!!!

http://bikecalculator.com/veloUS.html

This is a calculator I am using to try to figure out how hard I need to train on the indoor exercise bike to make my goal of riding 20 mph by June. You can plug in your information to see where you are in terms of mph. Cycling is my weakest link. I started out at 144 watts in late November for 1 hour and have worked up to 168 as of yesterday. I will need to be about 220 watts to hit 20 mph at my current weight.

stevebradley - 2011-12-28 4:42 PM JOHANNE - Yes, 2012 here we come -- and you're in the vanguard, blowing into it with a 20-miler two days out from it. Nice! Good plan, too, to hydrate and get psyched for a couple of days, and then being able to enjoy (and maybe even having earned!) whatever NYE and NYD bring to you. I think my sports doc used words very similar to yours: "I would try anything rather than have it." He was very supportive of my neuroma removal when it happened, so to hear him so strong-voiced about the bunion surgery talk really caught my attention. As for the toenails......aren't there effective torture techniques that involve their removal? No thanks from me, as well!

I know better then to try to do a long run on New Year's weekend! We don't do anything crazy but we'll go to a friends house for dinner and festivities Saturday night. New Year's Day is a lot of sitting around watching football, drinking fresh orange juice mimosa's and eating. I can't deny it! It's Dave's favorite day of the year

Dave has to go to work Friday so I think I'm going to plan my running route where he can drop me off 20 miles away and I'll run home. Then I can't fake my way out of any miles

Johanne,

I've spent a good part of the morning reading your personal blog.  Really enjoyed it and learning about you, your family, and how you came to triathlon.   You really got alot of volume in very quickly, and to have already done 2 half IM's so early in your tri career is impressive.

I noticed we have a few things in common.     I use Lara bars and Honey Stinger products on the bike.   They both seem to agree well with my stomach even when I am working hard.   I love it when the races have us older women starting mid or front of the pack for the same reason you cited - you feel more a part of the race being with the rest of the cyclists.   My attitude with swimming is also similar to yours.   Although I am always hoping and striving to improve my time (and it HAS improved dramatically from my 1st year), I am always relaxed with the swim, even smiling in the water, and don't gauge success on my time.

Spent some time reading your posts here as well and see you mentioned wanting to do a long, supported ride some time. Ken (my husband) and I did our first last year in Florida with the Florida Freewheelers.    The group has been around for a long time, it is REALLY inexpensive, and REALLY well run.   It is only 6 days and may not be as long as you were looking for, but it was a great experience, that we will do again.

I also enjoyed reading your HIM race reports. Vineman sounds like a nice event.   Ken will be retiring next year and we are hoping to do some racing in the States, so have added that to our list!

See that your husband is one of your training partners.   Ken also decided to take up triathlon after spending the first year taking pictures of me.    He was also starting to have problems keeping up with me on a bike.    We're pretty close in our abilities - not sure if that is because we do the same training or genetics.

Congratulations on your weight loss.   I have no doubt that last 20 pounds won't be around long.

Hope you have a great run today.   Good strategy.

Anne

Hi Anne,

Thanks for reading my blog

I think Vineman was one of my favorite races because my age group started in the middle. I felt so 'competitive' I guess starting in the last wave should give me incentive to pick up my pace!

Thanks for the info in the supported ride. I'm going to check it out. It's so hard to fit everything in.

Is Kitchener on the Vancouver side of Canada? Dave is still a few years from retirement so for now he likes more of the local tri's. Some of the ones we do together are either local or we'll overnight. He's going to do his first HIM in 2012 so that'll be fun. I think if his job didn't take up so much time her would do more. Right now, I'm a little faster swimming, we're even biking and he's a faster runner. We could run together to train but in a race he can step it up better then I can. I'm hoping the extra weight loss will pick up my pace to we can stay even int eh races

astorm65 - 2011-12-30 1:00 PM Man.... Thanks!

Alex,

I'm enjoyed changing my running form even though it is still a work in progress Dave, a friend and I took a clinic with a Chi coach and it was great. We did a follow up with him a couple of months later. I think it's really helped me stay healthy. I have a few aches right now but I think its all this marathon training. I think it's worth it.

stevebradley - 2011-12-30 10:07 AM Getting closer to being caught-up!

No kidding! I just spent an hour on the couch post run trying to catch up!

I'm caught up! I think.....

Ok, my run, I did it! 20 miles I planned my route and Dave dropped me off. The plan was to run up and back along a paved trail and then run home. I figured then I couldn't cheat myself out of any miles. I decided to try Honey Stinger chews on this run and they worked out well. I also had a run plan that I thought I'd practice for the race. I ran the first hour then ran 9 min with a 1 min walk, repeat. That worked for the next 1 1/2 hours then I ran 9 min, walked maybe 2, sometimes 3 min   That part wasn't in the plan but my legs took over my brain and they wanted to walk. Overall it was a good run. I finished in 3:52 with a 11:37 min/mile average. I felt pretty beat up at the end but I guess I should of! I came home and took an ice bath which is soooo cold but so good for you. I'm a little stiff when I've been sitting for a while. The rest of my long runs are a 12, a 20 and another 12 then a taper. Yippee!

DOUG -

This is a follow-up to my post to you earlier today, and the breathing technique suggested by GH, Jr.

Verified in the pool today, it is what I outlined earlier: right-left-not-left-right-not-right-left-not-left-right-not....ad nauseum. According to GH, it is a great way to get people to breathe bilaterally, as it involves both sides with the benefit of an extra breath for every four strokes. that is, for me when I'm unilateral, it is all right-sided: right-not-right-not-right-not-etc. So for every four strokes, i breathe twice. With the GH approach, it is three breaths out of every four strokes -- BONUS!!

Viewing breathing over 12 strokes, you would have:
standard unilateral --- 6 breaths
bilateral --- 4 breaths
Hall method --- 8 breaths
So, as one works towards bilateral, that get to "practice" much more on their "off" side, while not becoming taxed due to breathing less than unilateral. In fact, when done correctly (or smoothly), it is tough to get taxed with the Hall method.

Key here is that many people, when breathing to their off side, don't actually grab as much air as they do breathing to their strong side. Part of this is because they don't have adequate neck flexibility, and part is because they may not exhale fully while the head is still in the water. (There's more to this than what I just said, and if you want to know, just ask.)

All that said, the Hall technique takes time.......and I have never used it in a race. It is very discombobulating, swinging the head FULLY in order to grab breath on one side immediately after grabbing it on the other side, but as I said earlier, after a while there develops a nice rhythm, or flow.

Anyhow, if you ever feel like amusing yourself for a while at the pool with soemthing completely different -- follow Gary Hall, Jr!

I got a little addicted to all of this :)

Johanne

I'm from SoCal  too.  Went to Cal Poly Pomona they have had a float  in the Parade  every year since 1948 this is the 64th year.  I also remember camping out  on Orange Grove Blvd,  we did crazy things  when we were young now we just  run  triathlons!

GREAT! Glad that struck a chord wth you!

if you haven't been to the website yet, I just went and here's what I know:
Oct 20 is the date
$185 between now and Sunday
$199 between Sunday and May 1
$215 between May 1 and August 1
$250 from Aug 1 on.....although it will probably have sold out by then (the HIM has sold out each year)
About 157 people are currently registered, and I can't remember the limit (800? 1200?)

DENISE and JOHANNE -

My mom was also a Laura; does that count? (Her middle name was Edna, which I hope both of you avoided for your daughters. I guess it was a decent name, though, for someone born in 1917. Although.....maybe not!)
