Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great story Cynthia! I haven't done my first tri yet, but I am excited every day to get my body ready for this. Being healthy is a big part of all this for me but I also love to compete. In fact, I just got my cholesterol checked after years of cholesterol over 300 and high blood pressure. Cholesterol was 175 and BP was 106 over 64. Dr. said I may need to get off BP meds or at least lower because BP is borderline too low. He also said tell all your friends that this can be done and keep doing what you are doing. |

The thought of taking one less med is exciting. I saw an endocrinologist for the first time on Tuesday. My BP was 100/60, way low, especially for me and he wants me to stop my BP immediately! I am a little nervous though because this doc did not seem to believe me when I told him I was 70lbs heavier and my BP was so high at one point they wanted to put me in the hospital. He said I was not his typical patient! We got this Jay! |

I'm sure it's a great feeling to have it down to a normal level after so many years. I had a milestone achievement a couple of days ago..... I am finally below 200lbs! And to top it off, I bought my first pair of size 32 jeans yesterday! I think the last time I wore that size, I was in High School, what an awesome feeling! My daughters surgery went great today. The surgeon got in there, cleaned up the scar tissue and removed some Brusitis. He says she could be back in the pool in as little as 2 weeks! She is very excited!

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Almost forgot..... the outside thermometer read 72F this afternoon and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to go for a ride! My daughter was passed out from the pain meds and my mom had come over to watch her for me, so I headed out for a nice 2 hr ride! http://app.strava.com/rides/4028723 |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jay, Cynthia & Brian, you guys are very inspiring to the group and to others! Way to go. Be proud of your accomplishments and build on them. Who else has success stories? Big or small, share them. Tri season is just around the corner. I'm starting to get really pumped. Two pool sessions this week after being out of the water since mid-September. It's almost go time. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats Brian on the weight loss and your daughter's surgery. As for milestones, I seem to have them every week although I know that won't continue forever. This week I had my longest swim of 1500 yards and the scale said 169.5 which I haven't seen since I can remember. I don't plan to lose much more but a few more would be ok. I also am improving every week during bike classes and I think that is going to be big once the weather turns and i can get outside again. Have a great weekend all. Jay |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had a great week of training last week, and finished my last 20 mile run before the Little Rock Marathon. How the IM guys do that after the swim and ride, and do it a 6 minute pace, amazes me. All downhill from here till the marathon in three weeks. |

Steven, your going to do great at the marathon. I don't think I can hold a 6 minute pace on a 5K so I'm in the same boat as you on the amazement factor. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Let's start a Q&A for Mondays - We'll address a different topic each week that is of interest. So if you have a topic that you want to discuss let me know either here in the forum thread or PM me. If I don't know the answer then I will find someone who does to join us and help answer the questions. Why don't we talk about equipment questions today. If you have any questions about equipment questions, then let's hear them. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok...I will bite. I am trying to decide which wetsuit to buy. I think buying makes sense because it should bay for itself after one season. I am trying to decide between Xterra Vortex and Synergy Adrenaline suits. Both can be had online for $199 (list price $400). They both seem to have excellent reviews. Does anyone here have experience with them or maybe suggest a better option?

Jay
Jay, I can't speak to the Synergy wetsuit, but I own an Xterra Vortex. I think its a great entry level suit. It fits well, and I know that I am the only one who has ever peed in it. And even though it is entry level I plan on using it for several years. I definitely came to the same conclusion that buying is better than renting (after a couple of rentals). If you get on Xterra's e-mailing list you will see they run sales almost all the time. And BT has a discount with them as well. On the Synergy suit, has anyone on BT posted a product review?
You are definitely faster with a wetsuit than without one. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() On other issues. I have been in Masters Swim class 3 times in a row (Tu/Th). Still don't have my swimming endurance back yet, but I'm able to knock out a good 1800-2100 yds in 45 to 50 minutes. Trying to work on technique and stroke mechanics as well as some other deficiencies. Who else has got their workout done today? |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Back to the equipment question... Is a tri bike really worth the cost? I've got the chance to buy a used cervelo P2 for $550, but can't decide if having two bikes is too much of a splurge. For those who have a tri bike, do you see much difference? |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got a 4.8 mile run in on the treadmill this AM and I am leaving now for a lunch time swim of 1500 yards. As for the bike question, I am a beginner but my thought process is that if you want to be competetive in your age group or have hit a plateau with your tri times, then maybe getting the tri bike would help shave off some time. I have a nice road bike that I bought to get started and unless I get extremely competetive (which is entirely possible) after the first year or two, then I will stick with that. Sounds like a good price if you decide to go that route. By the way, I bought the Xterra wet suit. I just hope my chlostrophobia doesn't kick in when I go to do the swim. I will try in a pool first. Just thinking about it makes me a little clammy but I'll be damned if that is going to stop me after all this training! Newbie question with apologies to the veterans: When I go to do the swim, I wear my wetsuit with what under it? I assume bike shorts are not an option since you can't run in them so does everyone wear tri short/suit underneath? In this case,I guess you deal with the less padding of a tri suit for a day?

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steven, I believe having a tri bike does make a difference. I was faster when I got one, than the day before I had one. Now that could be because of a newer, lighter bike or it could be because of being more aero or it could even be because of psychological reasons. The fact is I was faster. To me, being correctly fit on a tri bike and riding within your appropriate ranges allows you to have a strong run off the bike and finish strong. Is it absolutely necesssary? No. But if I had the extra cash and it fit me I would do it. Of course it is also like asking a group of crack addicts if they want more crack. |

I would buy it just because of the price. |

I'm far from a veteran, but from everyone i've talked to and video's i've watched on the internet, it seems most people wear either a one piece tri suit or tri shorts and a tri shirt under their wetsuit. I don't have the body for a one piece so I'll definitely be wearing the two piece option. I personally have been training on the bike in my tri shorts for the past 3 months so my butt won't be shocked on race day. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have always worn tri top and tri shorts underneath (tri suit is certainly ok if that's what you wear) during a race. I've never worn bike shorts underneath. I don't actually own any bike shorts, but if I did I wouldn't wear them under the wetsuit. Now when I have done some open water training with no follow up bike ride, I have worn jammers underneath. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tried to run last night, for the first time in almost 3 weeks after the calf problem. Didn't go so well. I felt a strain after a little less than a half mile, turned around and came back. Went to the doctor today and it turns out I have an incomplete gastroc tear. 4 weeks in a boot and PT. At least I can swim and cycle as long as I have no pain. Have a good weekend everyone. Be safe. |
