OK, time for an update.....

Much has happened since I joined the tour. First things first. I decided, somewhat reluctantly, to run the half marathon instead of the full. I have the unexplainable urge to run a full marathon. But I am learning to accept the fact that I need to be patient and allow my body to catch up to my goals.  My longest run to date is 10 miles. That was two weeks ago. I feel confident that I can add 3 more miles to that without dying.

So now I can add in more cycling without the fear of sabotaging my running. Also, I have some pains that I hope will subside with less running. I think one may be a ?metatarsal issue. Honestly I think I am trying to avoid the injury issue altogether. I am afraid if I stop that I may not start again................... It sounds stupid when you type it out like that.

Guess I need to go to the doctor huh? Frown

I feel like this is an AA meeting....

"My name is TJ, and I have an injury."

Ugh, How do you know when you need to just harden up vs seek medical attention?

Ok, I'm back, a few pounds heavier, sigh.

I thought this was a great question...

The difference between some "niggling" pains that may reoccur and serious stuff is mostly that I can affect the niggling pains with rest, ice, compression, and self massage...my shoulder injury was given lots of rest and when I tried to go back to swimming, it hurt as bad as the day I injured it...off to the doctor I went...

HTFU is not really a great idea unless you're just being lazy...hurting is not being lazy, big difference.

And i wanted to share that I had  similar pain in my foot in the ramp up for 2010 Chicago marathon, and I took care of it with a few podiatrist visits and some changes in my footwear. Total relief because I was convinced it was something serious. So maybe it's not as bad as you might think!

I rented my first wetsuit today from http://www.triwetsuitrentals.com/

They are located in Florida and ship sooner and faster than the one in California (wetsuitrental.com)  They also asked where I carry my weight.  Since I currently have it "In Front of Me",  I thought that was a good question.  LOL

I hope this will make the Orca faster.  And I hope to better relate to the others with swimming issues to see if that causes me anything.  I just love being the guinea pig!

HOT, HOT, AND HOT! Oh yeah did I mention it's hot-lol. You'd think I would be used to the heat and training in it- but nooooo I'm not. Got the bright idea to run in the middle of the day and liked to died trying to do it. Won't make that mistake again. Lord help me as summer really kicks in. I'm going to have to run in the middle of the night. Which I practically tried that also and still sweated my rear end off- sigh. Running at 8pm should be cool-nope not around here. Alaska is looking like a good place to live right now-hehe.

Dude!!   you are an inspiration the way you go after it!   I love that you keep getting things worked out.   Ask questions, make up your mind then go do it.   Its truly is wonderful to have a role in your progress.   I feel good about that.   Keep it up bro!

UGHH!! I just got back from a house hunting trip in Mississippi. I haven't done one bit of exercise since Wednesday, and I have eaten my weight in fried seafood!! I just had a chance to look through all the recent posts. I appreciate everyone trying to help out on the swim panic issues. I think if we all keep brainstorming, and trying different techniques we'll get there!! I too have quite a background in OWS (not racing). I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I am a certified OW rescue diver...it makes my panic issues that much worse!! I'm thinking that my main issues are the wetsuit constriction, and the adrenaline surge at the beginning of the race, which increase my heart rate and respirations before I even get into the water, then the cold water shock which elevates them further. Combine all that and it leaves little room for controlled breathing. My next plan is to do a reverse sprint in a couple weeks, which ends with a pool swim. Obviously I will be more tired for the swim, but hopefully my adrenaline will be normalized by then, which will at least allow me to control my breathing. I'll let you know how it goes!!

I'm not starting out too well on our competition!! At least I took my RHR every morning!! That was the extent of my physical exertion!!

I think you hit the nail on the head with the panic issues. Those same things happen to me at the race start but it's just not related to the wetsuit- more related to my Hawaii experience. But I think the physical response - adrenaline surge, resp. rate increase and heart rate increase response are all the same. I am convinced though that mentally I can control it, I just have to practice doing that more. My last tri, I was able to converse at length with the kayakers, they thought I was the funniest thing and couldn't believe how well I could actually swim. But then like Jacki my evil twin would rear up and go oh no- what are you doing you can't swim your heart rate is too high, and I'd have to turn over on my back- soon as I did I would be fine and could converse again. It's crazy I know. I just kept talking myself into turning back over and swimming some more and eventually I finished the course. I was even faster than my first tri- lol. So I'm convinced more practice will make it better. We'll see- lol. How did the house hunt go? Any luck finding something? Shelly

Since I did a post and run on this topic, I wanted to come back and thank all of you for your responses, this is really good stuff. Maybe we don't need an expert...we just need to chew on it ourselves and figure it out. I think everyone has brought a tremendous amount of insight to the problem. And FTR, I wanted to express how grateful I am for hearing the backstories on the panic issues.

While I have never had a panic in the water, I am reminded (by all of you) that it can happen at any time to anyone, and I am just as at risk as the next person. It is definitely  a good mental exercise to visualize what you will do if you find yourself freaking out on the swim. Remember the wetsuit is buoyant. Stop and tread for a minute. Hang on a kayak. Turn around and live to swim another day. Whatever it takes.

Good stuff!

Life. Sometimes you just have to smile, (and/or cuss under your breath.)

My new friends. I am shaking my head and laughing at myself this morning. In times past I would have handled this a little differently. Thanks to God's grace and a good dose of his perspective on things I can just laugh.  (You can too.)

So yesterday was circled on the calendar. It was the 20 week OB appointment and the big ultrasound. I left work a little early, grabbed the boys from school and met my wife at the doctor's office. Everything is well. It was so much fun watching the boys look at the baby on the screen. Good times. Left the doctor and headed to the bike shop. Since I think my running may be limited for a bit due to foot issues I justified the purchase of puncture resistant tires. (By the way, I am a cheapskate. So new tires are a splurge. That is another problem that triathlon is helping to solve.) ..... Back to the story. I got home and proceeded, somewhat giddily, to install the tires. This is my first set of new tires. Stiff, difficult to install, new tires. The giddiness wore off quickly. With sore thumbs and mumbled cussing on my lips I resorted to tire levers for help. The package clearly says NOT to use levers but I gave in anyway. Hissssss..... Oops. Popped a brand new tube. Took a deep breath. Calmed my inner cheapskate and grabbed another new tube. I proceeded to destroy that one also. Awesome. In times past I might have thrown the tire across the yard. But the healthier me decided to put down the wheels and go help my wife weed the garden. Now i'm feeling more relaxed and a little proud of my handling of the situation. Mind you i'm hobbling around with a sore foot, but nothing is gonna get me down right? Well a good attitude didn't prevent me from catching my toe on a landscaping brick and ripping off a large chunk of toe. Double awesome. And yes it was the same foot.  I have a podiatrist appointment tomorrow. He's gonna think I stuck my foot under a lawnmower. <--- At least I didn't do that.

Like I said, sometimes you just have to smile.  Laughing

This is going to sound like an old Johnny Carson  (miss him BTW)  lead in.    "HOW HOT WAS IT???"

Nice work!   For whatever reason every TRI I do (except one and that was the immortal 69.1)  it is BROILING hot.   Sooo  It is great to train in the heat.   Gotta be careful though!

For me it's not every tri, but every attempt at a new distance. So IM Wisconsin should be record breaking heat this year. Yeah! And I tried training in the heat...ugh, I think it just made me slower.
