I hear you, I just like being a cheerleader, and have found that it helps me stay motivated and on track. It also does not hurt that my job affords me the oppurtunity to hop on her more often than most. |

Extreme Veteran 1574 | Subject: RE: Iron Aardvark group - Closed Hey Josh, Is the group done? This is not a complaint, I ask because of the new groups forming and now theres not that much activity. Once again, I'm not complaining I've just never been in a group and don't know if / when it stops. You are all now my friends, so you can not escape my inspires, PM's, and harassment. It's funny becuase I started with you as my Mentor, and you had a large role in me becoming one, Thank you. I also now have you and Grahm along with a handful of others on BT to see what I need to be doing to get where I want to be in Triathlon. (Ironman Texas, 2014) If the aardvark's continue, I will gladly continue to participate. |

I am happy to continue if you guys want to stay active, it is totally up to the group. Please everyone let me know what you would like to do. JK |

Extreme Veteran 1574 | Subject: RE: Iron Aardvark group - Closed I am good with just communicating one on one with you guys, through inspries and PM's when necessary. There really are only two or three of us that still actively post and we all continue to inspire each other. |

Member 242 Co Louth, Ireland | Subject: RE: Iron Aardvark group - Closed I think it'd be good to keep it open but not to expect you (Josh) to put the same time as you have done. The forum is a great sounding board for all of us that need it & I've come to respect the advice & opinions given here. Josh - thanks for volunteering & and all the advice along the way. It's definitely something that I'll be doing in the future. |

Glad to help. Thanks to those of you who are willing to put in the time to start your own groups. I will keep checking the thread all summer and I am personally on logging my workouts pretty much every day or so... so don't hesitate to ask questions on the thread, or in a PM or inspire. |

Extreme Veteran 1574 | Subject: RE: Iron Aardvark group - Closed Ok, question and I'm in no rush to buy, which is why I ask. What are wheels really worth time / energy wise. I have a set of Fulcrum Racing 7 Wheels right now and have been looking at the Planet X 52 MM carbon clinchers, $529.00 (show really good reviews) Question is how big of a difference is there really, is it worth the money (not just these but carbon clinchers), are they basically just wheels until I make the engine stronger. I don't want to spend the money if it's basically the same thing as what I have and then again I don't really know if I need anything new at all until I get better. Give me y'alls thoughts, and don't worry, I'm not going to get my feelings hurt if you say the engine needs work, becuase I am really starting to like cycling and will be putting in the time.
Thanks in advance. |

Veteran 240 Angola, IN | Subject: RE: Iron Aardvark group - Closed Hunting Triathlete - 2013-05-10 1:53 PM Ok, I have done a ton of research on this prior to purchasing my wheels, and because my wife is really wanting a set of wheels also. The very short answer is this: if you average over 20mph, then wheels are worth the money, and you will go faster. If you average less than 20mph then they will make you slower because they are heavier. The long answer is going to drag on and on because I'm typing this on my iPad and there are no paragraph breaks when I do that.Ok, question and I'm in no rush to buy, which is why I ask. Veteran 240 Angola, IN | Subject: RE: Iron Aardvark group - Closed Hunting Triathlete - 2013-05-10 1:53 PM There is actually what I would describe as a bell curve between speed and weight of the aero wheels. An aero helmet works to your advantage at all speeds, but wheels will only advantage you if you go fast enough to counteract the extra weight (usually about 20 mph) there is also a very large difference in the exact wheels. I don't believe that the Planet X wheels are worth anything except for looks. Any of the wheels that are actually flat on the sides have little to no aerodynamic advantage. You really want to look for the rims that have the same concave shape as a set of Zipps. You don't actually buy Zipp brand, there are other brands with the same shape, such as Sram, etc. There is a reason you can buy Planet X for $600 a set but Zipps cost $3k and its not just the name.Ok, question and I'm in no rush to buy, which is why I ask. Extreme Veteran 1574 | Subject: RE: Iron Aardvark group - Closed Perfect, that is the exact answer or should I say type of answer I was looking for. You're the man, Josh. Forgot to tell y'all since I asked about it way back when. I was able to find an Olympic to do on June 2nd and felt it would be much better overall than to do the one July 7th, 2 weeks before Racine. I'm not saying I might not still go and make it a workout day, but then again I feel that a Much longer ride than 24 miles (likely 56 - 60) would benefit be more two weeks out than doing another Olympic, and would be free. |

Josh, is the longer ride and a mid length run the two weeks prior likely my best bet? Not sure I understand the question, but if you are talking about a taper into an Olympic race, I'd say stick with your training plan and just taper off a little starting about Wednesday and Thursday before the oly race, then right back into training on Monday again.Edited by discipleguideservice 2013-05-13 9:08 PM |

Extreme Veteran 1574 | Subject: RE: Iron Aardvark group - Closed No, I was saying that back that I previously planned on doing my first Olympic on the 7th, two weeks out from my Half as practice / warmup. Now that I am getting to do the Olympic on June the 2nd, I was asking would be better to just do a longer Bike 56 - 60 miles and a longer Run 8 miles on the weekend of the 7th, or a second Olympic? |

No substitute for race experience, but it's good to get the miles in also. Kind of a toss up. If you are getting plenty of long rides, I'd race, but if not, I'd put the miles in. |

Member 242 Co Louth, Ireland | Subject: RE: Iron Aardvark group - Closed I'd agree with Josh, but from looking at your current logs - if I had to decide now I'd go for the long ride. I'd do the earlier Olympic n then push on with the training. |

Extreme Veteran 1574 | Subject: RE: Iron Aardvark group - Closed That is what I had pretty much decided to do, but wanted to get y'alls input. The other plus for me it will save me a lot of money that I can use when I go to Racine. Now I don't have to pay an entry fee, hotel, meals, and everything else that goes into a weekend tri away from home. I know I'm not on point for where I wanted to be at this point being 10 weeks out for my Half, but how far off am I? I am just doing it to finish and not be death at the end. |

Extreme Veteran 1574 | Subject: RE: Iron Aardvark group - Closed Not saying that I'm good, but I looked at the last nine weeks of the Beginner Half Ironman plan here on BT and I'm currently doing more or right at what the plan calls for. I think that i might keep it in my log to hold me a little more accoutable and make sure I'm hitting my marks, but I feel a little better now. Just a little becuase I'd like to be farther at this point. |

I think you should be doing 3-4 hour rides and 2 hour runs at least once per week from about 6 weeks out up to about 2 weeks out before starting a slight taper, then a big taper the week before the race. |
