charleston - 2008-04-07 7:51 AM Thank you Josh The first race report has been completed, therefor so has the first race. And only a couple weeks from the first tri, very nice. I do have another running question for yous guys. My ankles have been killing me either the day after, or simply later in the day, on any of the days I exceed 5 miles (the main reason I have been trying to keep my runs shorter). My theory is that this will go away as I keep losing all of the extra weight. I was just curious if anyone else has experienced the dreaded ankle pain and if I should be doing something different. The day after my 10k I struggled to get down stairs, but now today feel right as rain.

Sounds like a fun race.

On the ankle pain...does it feel sore or injured? There's a difference. If it's just something that you feel for a day and then it's better, that's probably ok. Just make sure it's not something that gets progressively worse.

Other than just plain old post-run soreness, which is normal, my guess would be your shoes. What kind of shoes do you have? How old are they? I try to get shoes every 400-450 miles. I have a specialized running shoe store a few miles away. Maybe this is old news to you....looks like there is one in your town called The Foot Store.

Odds are their shoes will be a bit more expensive than at your traditional sporting goods store, but they can match you with a shoe that is compatible with your weight, foot shape, and gait. I would highly recommend you try them or somewhere else that is a dedicated running shoe store. (Foot Store was the first thing that popped up when I searched for "Mt Pleasant SC running shoe store"

The shoes are actually new, I was fitted at a running store downtown. It is kind of a strange pain. Forgive my layman terms, but the two knots that stick out on either side of you ankle, lets call them ankle bones, that is what hurts, at least the ones on the inside. I read a good deal of stuff and it sounds like heel inserts will work, so I am giving that a shot tomorrow, on a nice short run.

Will gladly welcome any other ideas. I only have 150 miles on these, the most expensive shoes I have ever bought, so I am going to hold off as long as I can, of course if the problem persists I will bite the bullet and get a new pair.

They are addidas adistar cushions by the way (and it does not say it on the shoe but I remember the guy at the store throwing in the number 7 somewhere).

I am just speculating here but did he say (at the running store) that you pronate or over pronate?  I have some friends that  over pronate and one of them had big bruises on the inside bone of her ankle after a half mary.   I think she figured out that the shoe wasnt quite supportive enough since the arch of her foot was completely "bottoming out".   Your arch should collapse a bit while running but not enough to bruise or hurt your ankle.    From what i have gathered by my 2 minutes of research on the net, is that the Adidas Adistar Cushions are for mild pronation.   Perhaps you have a more severe pronation than what the adistar cushions will support?   I am really just guessing here.    Maybe you should ask this question out in triathlon talk.  you may get a better response.

On a related note,  I supinate (spell?) or have a high arch and I was fitted once for a pair of Adidas Supernovas..  I really didnt like them at all.   They seemed to have no forefoot cushion at all and tons of heel cushion.  I couldnt run in them.  I got brooks and i have never had a problem since.  I have some friends and a wife that love the Brooks motion control shoes (for pronaters).

Here's another question....when you are running, do you land on your heel or forefoot? Supposedly you need to land more on your forefoot than heel, which seems weird considering most shoes boast a lot of cushioning in the heel. Practice running with landing on your forefoot. It feels weird, but is supposed to be much better for you impact-wise. Once I'm able to start running again (May 1st is the goal) I'm going to work on that.

I'm up and running (and swimming and biking).

Things are crazier and busier than ever. But I feel 110% and am finally getting my workouts in (though I barely have the time to post this).

Congratulations charleston!!!!

Alright, I went out and bought some inserts for those who pronate, tried to run less on the heals, and so far so good. I did not run very far, and probably will not until after my tri, but no new pain. Thank you everyone for your help. Let's hope this continues

  • April 13 - apw0397 - Playtri Festival Aquabike- 1.2 mile swim, 54 mile bike
  • Another big weekend!

This was supposed to be my spring A race. However, due to my fracking achilles (MFA), I'm only doing the Aquabike this weekend instead of the Half. Kind of a bummer. I know I could do it, but it would be risking injury to try to go with my achilles not 100%. On the bright side, last year nobody in my AG did the Aquabike, so if form holds, I can get some cheap hardware. Not that I'm planning on taking it easy! I'm going out to kill the swim and crush the bike.

I posted last year's triathlon race report in my blog. Laughter, tears, self-inflicted violence...it's a blockbuster.

There's another rr in there from August if you feel bored enough to read that, too.

It was fun, and reading through my rr today (nearly a year later) I definitely am the wiser going into next weekend. And yet, I know that I have a lot to learn.

    Thanks for reading.

So, how was everyone's weekend? I managed to beat out the only other guy in the "it hurts to run so I won't" (Aquabike) division and get my first 1st place trophy. I had a great swim (1:38/100) and hit the bike hard. Too bad the wind was a steady 15 mph at the start, increasing to 25 mph by the time I finished. Thought I had a chance at 20mph. Had it the first loop, but the wind killed me miles 27-37. Ended up at 19.4. Not bad for this guy.

Congrats on the 1st place finish! That swim pace is amazing to me...I learned how to swim 2 years ago using TI but just can't seem to go faster than 2:30/100. I'm looking around for a swim coach but haven't found one yet...I've been doing drills but now I'm thinking of putting in some interval training as well...so what's the secret???

My 10k went pretty well.  I ran 43:58 (6.1 miles the course was short) @ 7:13 pace.   I PRed by alot on a tougher course .   I am getting faster, slowly by surely.  I was 15th overall and 1st in my AG.  Overall a pretty good race.

I've seen huge improvements over the last 10 months since joining a Masters group. I swim in the fast lane, which makes me have to go faster. Swimming on my own I'm not nearly as fast.

Another thing is having a coach to point out some little things that I'm doing wrong. Last week he noticed that I was sinking my hands too deep in the water when I extended them out, so I was not getting as much power from my pull. Not much of an adjustment, but boy does it make a difference.

The secret is really that with swimming, unlike running or biking, you can't get faster just by doing more of it. You can to a point, but you reach a limit eventually. I was around 2:00/100 for the longest time in the pool, and my OW times were around 2:15. Having a coach and the group around me has really helped. If you can find a Masters group...do it!

not really that close at all.... i think i have problem actually taking myself to that edge.  I may have been able to run faster, I just dont know.  My HR avg was 169 which is the upper edge of zone 3.   I wasnt looking at zones or HR much during the race, i was just going by feel.  Maybe my mind is psyching me out because my HR says i can go faster.  I have another chance next weekend to push the limits with a short duathlon- (2.5-14-2.5)   Should i try to watch my HR and see if i can get it up into zone 4 more?   What do you think.
