Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() George - I go to my chiro about once a month, more lately because of stress as my neck gets very out of alignment when under stress. I also sleep in a strange position so it is constantly moving my body out of alignment... Jeff - not sure about the reincarnation thing with your chiro... but to each his own... |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() gdsemiller - 2011-08-18 2:03 PM Group question. Has anyone used a chiroprator before? Not really for the back since I know that is always going to be an issue, but my body feel so tight, especially around my neck and shoulders, I thought a chiro could pop it all up and loosen it. Not really sure, what are yall thoughts. I have been told to go get a massage, but they never really do anything for me. I have not had one from a pro but my wife has tried and for some reaon it does not do anything, its like my body cant feel it. My wife thinks I have a freaky body since I'm also not tickelish anywhere. Well I hope everyone has a great day or I guess evening.
I think all Chiro's are not created equal. I went to a guy for a bit (several visits) and said I'd have to keep coming back for a while blah blah blah.... I never felt any difference. My brother goes to a guy about 15mi away and he says its usually 1 visit and done each time. He said that his Chiro said if he can't fix it in one visit then its not something that a should be addressed by a Chiro. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ALEX - Ha! I was thinkingt hat I had to tell you a couple of things about lap-counting, and now that you've asked I will definitely divulge! First tactic should probably be your watch, in your case the Garmin. At the end of the first complete loop, just notice the time and multiply it by five and as long as at the end your time is close to the product you came up with, you'll be ready to dismount. Second tactic would be your bike computer, set on distance and never moved to anything else. That'll very simply tell you when 24 miles is completed. (If you have a bike computer, this is the best approach.) Third could be little sticky dot thingies placed on your bars somewhere. At the end of each complete loop, remove one just before the turnaround. When you've removed the fifth one....it's time to dismount. (Or, have four and remove one just after each complete-loop turnaround, and that when you make it back there again and there are no more to remove.....get ready to dismount! It is funny how this sort of thing can mess with one's head. As that guy wrote, it's not always as easy as just counting to five! I think I mentioned to you the half-irons I ahve done with six out-and-backs, and the one time on the same course when I did my second iron with its TWELVE out-and-backs. Brain-fry can be quote pronounced once you get beyond about 50 miles, let alone 112! I'm off to see if registration is still open, and also if the various motels I phoned last night still have vacancies. Onwards! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() GEORGE - My own experiences with chiropractors is mixed. I agree with what Craig said about them not being equal, and that covers technique as well as the "business" side of it. I did firts-vistits with several who wanted to rope me into a big, comprehensive pland -- say, 3X a week for a month, then 2X for soix weeks, then 1X for eight weeks....and then re-assess. The one I have now is on a direct as-needed basis, which may be one and done, or it might be a few visits over a few weeks, but never more than 2X a week. I have used her since about '03, but until this past spring hadn't needed a visit for about 2.5 years. She now charges about $28 a visit and some of those vistits can be with less than 10 minutes of hands-on time. My A.R.T. charges $70 for an hour, and that just seems like better contact per dollar. Of course, there are some things a chiro can reach that A.R.T. cannot, so when it's necessary, I'm to the chiro. I've had a couple who were just strange, using weird machines and other arcane approaches. They might be the ones who give chiropracty a bad name - which is by and large NOT justified. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() GEORGE again - A few more things. First, many thanks for importing my RR to the other site; that saved me a ton of re-typing! Second, the name Big Skies comes from my love of wide-open spaces, be they the Canadian prairies, the southern U.S. plains, or the tundra of the high arctic. I grew up in the forests of New England, but grew to love "big skies" when (a) I drove cross-country to Orgeon in '73, (b) when I drove back to Maine from Oregon via Canada and went through Alberta and Saskatchewan and decided to transfer to University of Alberta, and (c) when I got my first field biolgy job doing research in the high arctic in summer '74. Third..........I can't remember right now!!! ![]() ![]() |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() GEORGE Once more - Got it! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I told you last night that when I try to swim away a sore lower back, I avoid doing too much hip-torque rolling. Well, at yoga tonight the emphasis was on twists, and the instructor, who has vast experience, said that twists are great for lower back issues. So, I guess I have to rethink my gut (as it were...) thinking, and defer to his better judgment and attempt regualr swimming mechanics the next time my lower back gets "sticky". Just so you hear another side of the story! Edited by stevebradley 2011-08-18 9:29 PM |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JEFF - Now, now, now --- and maybe even last week! ![]() Those symptoms are telling, and you still have a lot of miles to cover before Branson, plus of course Branson itself, and the chances are the symptoms will only become more pronounced during that span. Um, er, uh.....Sept 18 for Branson, is what you've told me umpteen times? If so, it really is adequate time to get them broken in, especially with the mileage you knock off. I see you have a recovery week coming up, but even with that you should be doing enough running between now and Branson to get them got and broken in. So, get shopping! It may likely turn out that you will need another pair before the marathon --- which is when? I have treid to make it to 400 miles a few times, and my lower body has rebelled in many nefarious ways. I have decent mechanics and weigh under 180 (about 167 for the past two months), and I still have trouble making it to even 300 miles. Now, having said that, I have decent mechanics in spite of under-pronating, so I can wear down the outer midfoot area quite dramatically. This will then skew my feet further to the outside than normal, and that is a problem that only new shoes will address (I don't use orthotics). Did I tell you to get shopping? As for the groin thing, let me think about that some. It sounds fairly tolerable, and as long as it doesn't increase in discomfort you might be able to work around it and still get in your workouts. But if soreness lasts longer or enters into other areas of your life, then it will be time to re-assess. Back to the shoes, it's atough call as to when to use them. On the one hand, I worry about you running 10 in the old ones; on the other hand, 10 may be too many for the new ones. So, is therev any chance you can move the 10er back some, say into next week, and work away at some lower miles in the new ones? Some shoes are great "out of the box", Newtons being one, and in my olden days of running in Asics, they were another; Saucony was mostly okay. With Newtons, I can run any distance in a new pair. With Asics, it was about 10km in the DS Trainer model, for a few runs, anyhow. For Saucony, it was 5-8km for several runs, in several different models. What is your shoe-of-choice? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 10 this week probably isn't essential. It occured to me what I have identified as a "groin" thing may be a thigh/leg thing, maybe a hamstring or some other tendon and maybe related to the shoes. No issues in the pool tonight but when I moved to the hot tub the jets on my thigh/groin felt very soothing |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JEFF - Interesting what you say about your groin maybe being something else, as that is my experience with "groin" concerns -- I'm never sure exactly where they emanate from and where they extend to, or vice versa! Are you icing it? It's a good idea to do so -- al ll that nice soft-tissue for the ice to penetrate into! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ALEX - Hell's bells. I just went to sign up for Mossman, and the regular $100 rate for age group is sold out. There are still charity spots for $150, and I have about 24 hours to decide if that extra $50 is worth it. I can't say I wasn't warned. He wrote me last week and said he figured regular spots would be gone by mid-week, but that charity spots would be offered. I guess I was hoping that Thursday, late, counted as "mid-week". But nooooooooo! ![]() Decisons, decisions! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JEFF - No one at all, sir, no one at all -- just that lusciously tender region-at-large of yours! In the spirit of something being only as strong as its weakest leak, it's amzing how "degraded" I can be made to feel with an injury. There have been more times than I care to count when I have no longer felt like a triathlete due to being unable to train like one. So, in effect, when my own soft-tissue gets compromised, it works to make me feel soft in general. Bah. |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JOHANNE - That's two GREAT things --- to have you back here, and to learn of the whoppin' 7' PR. That is obviously enormous, another solid piece of evidence as to how much you have improved and will almost certainly continue to improve. You must be floating around on yet another cloud nowadays, huh? I enjoyed your report, especially the part about bumping into Dave. You two really must've been destined for each other! For most people, they find their progress similar to yours -- that with decent training, the improvements continue to build on each other. I really think that you haven't even begun to approach your maximum (maximal?) abilities, and that you can continue to look at significant time gains for many years. I think that one of the reasons I have gotten grabbed so strongly by Yoga is that it represents somthing I can somewhat dramatically grow in. I haven't felt that with triathlon for a few years, and unless I get a coach of made big upgrades in equipment, i am close to my peak abilities as it stands. And as I can't afford either coach or big upgrades, I think I'm mostly stuck where I am. That said, though, there are areas I can improve in: better swims, a return to faster transitions (I used to be an ace, but recently not so much), smarter nutrition, being willing to hurt lots throughout the run. I think I am close to my abilities at olys, but can still grow in sprints and half-irons -- but the latter only if my body can hold up to the training for them. The sprints, though, are intriguing because the thought of a high-intensity swim and run for those distances is not so daunting. I mean, they are relatively small periods at which I would have to suffer, half the distances of an oly, in fact. Blah, blah, blah! My original point being that for you, if you keep working hard, there is no foreseeable end to your upside. That doesn't mean that every race will be stellar-by-comparison (remember, not all training and racing is progressively linear!!), but over the course of one or two or three races, you should continue to see improvements. Halleloo! And halleloo to be able to go to London. It ought to be all fine and dandy by then, as the British justice system is dealing with the perps with swift and heavy sentences. Sadly, though, I don't think merry old England deals in ice cream lunches. I guess you're just going to have to make do with "cream teas" -- those lovely mid-afternoon events that feature scones with jam and Devon cream. Oh, yum!! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() New shoes! Has luck would have it, this is the Texas Tax free weekend for back to school clothes and a few other things. I stopped in a store early and beat the rush of back to schoolers. (unplanned, just luck) So I got a pair of Nike Torch for 59.99 no tax. I was shopping for the Nike Zoom, the torch is one price point up from the Air Copious I just wore out, that was marked down to 49.99 which I almost bought. I still haven't graduated up to big boy running shoes but perhaps when I feel like a serious runner I will. I am wearing them today just at work and around and I will get a 3 mile run in them at lunch and a 2 mile this evening. That will get me the planned "easy 5". Tomorrow I will do my 3 mile brick run in them sock-less, Sunday, I will do 4.25 mile laps, the first in the new shoes, the second in the old shoes and a little 2 mile lap in the previous old shoes which will become just an old pair of running shoes instead of my office shoes. Then next week I will alternate and use the new ones on the short runs. By next weeks long run they should be broken in I guess. So the Torch's become my primary shoe, the Air Copious becomes my office shoe for my lunch time runs, and the Alvord's become the old pair in my closet. |

Nothing special, just pull them on and go. The longest sockless run has been 10k. No big deal, to me. For Branson I will put socks on at T-2. I never wear socks on the bike unless it is crazy cold. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ALEX - Wellllllll..........all the data are on Active, and all i have to do is complete the process. Even the credit card info is just sitting there, in limbo. I get stuck at the $50 difference, and then of course there is the Active charge itself, something like $11.38 or (gasp!) $11.83. So, it's adding up! Accoms around Brgprt are pretty reasonable, being around $80 before taxes. I am sorely tempted to take you up on your most generous offer, but given that it is a 6:30 start and I am a committed early-bird at races, it means I would be looking to depart for there in the wee-wee-wee hours. Seriously, I will aim to get to the site ~4:40/4:45, and that wouldn't change if I was staying in Albany or Pawling or sleeping in my car at the beach parking lot. So, I'm off on a bike ride now and do one last body-scan, and if all seems hunky-dory I will return and consummate the registration process. You're not planning to depart immediately after finishing, are you? I'd love to have time to kick around with you for a while, but there's the small matter of the 10km run I have to do and that you get to bypass. But I promise --- I'll be as quick as I can! Also sold out are regular aquabike spots, but charity ones are open for it as well. I don't think there were any charity relay spots, however, for what it's worth. |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JEFF - Nicely played! Of course, somewhere there is a very disappointed kid who wanted the Torch in your size, and the clerk had to tell him that some really big kid was in earlier and bought the last pair. Bully! I hope they work well for you, and just in general, show roatation is always a good policy. I don't do it as well as I should, have gotten slack over the past year or so. Maybe I'lll try to reform myself! |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() JOANNE - Yes, for years, and yes too for using BodyGlide. I don't do it always, especially for training runs, but before the start of a race I will often smear BG on the tops and along the toes, and on my heels -- all just in case. If I have felt a bit of sensitivity on the bottom of my foot, I will rub a thin layer of BG on the corresponding area of the shoe. And I will often put some BG on the back "collar" of the shoes -- just in case! I never cycle with socks, except in early-early season, so running sockless means it's one less thing to fuss about it transition. My last two HIM I have gone sockless, although at that distance it is a bit risky. However, BG has come out with a product called "liquid powder", and it comes in ultra-thin packets that can fit completely unobtrusively in any pocket you might have in your race clothing. The first time I carried it with me was at MightyMan Montauk Half-Iron in Oct '09, and around mile 10 I started to feel a "hot spot", so I stopped and got the foot and shoe coated. Perfect, with no subsequent problems! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() STEVE - Since I am planning on picking up my packet Sunday I will want to get there early as well. I do plan on hanging out for a while after as the last time I left right after an event my body got really sore from the drive back in the car. I plan on bringing a beach towel and just hanging for awhile. Let me know if a) you press the button... and b) if you want to crash at my place. Purely up to you, I will not take offense if you chose to stay in Bridgeport.... I figured I would leave at 3-330 or so which puts me at the beach between 4 and 4:30... I have gotten to be more of an early bird for races as well since my over sleeping episode...

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello Everyone I hope everyone is having a great day and have a great weekend. Good luck to anyone racing this weekend and everyone be safe. Steve - Your Welcome on the post, anytime. I think I might try and go for a swim this evening, last time I did something was last Sat race. Back is a little stiff and sore, but it should be ok for the swim. Tomorrow I will try a bike ride and if the back is ok then a run on Sunday. I can feel the weight gain adding up since no training in the last 5 days. I like to cycle sockless but I have not tried running without socks yet. As for putting BenGay on my feet and shoes, im not sure about that since the smell. Ok I know BG is not bengay but boddy glide, just had to say something funny. Does Bengay stink, I think I'm thinking of that Vicks Rub my mom would put on my throat when little with a sore throat. I dont know why she did that because the smell kept me up all night. YUCK. Thanks everyone for the Chiro talk. They really scare the poo out of me since all I hear is they grab my head and try to yank it off or they get my back and try to snap it like they are with the WWE. I might just try a daily stretching in the morning when I wake up since I have not done that before.

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ALEX - I pushed the button and am in. I actually did that before the ride, figuring that being disappointed once due to dopiness was enough, and that I'd flagellate myself to a fare-the-well if I got back after the ride and found the charity slots gone, too. That said, it irked me a bit to see the receipt in my inbox, with "charity age-group" right up front. That only served to reinforce my dopiness -- not that I need reminding! I will keep you posted about my plans, which are in constant flux/evolution even as I type. If for some reason I don't get back to you between now and Sunday morning, I will try to remember to traipse around wearing either an orange or bright yellow running cap, with "Newton" on the front. I am about 6'2", so somewhat hard to overlook. I have big ears! What else? My bike is a Cervelo, gray, and in transition it will probably have a pointy geekster helmet, white with some blue and red, perched on the aerobars. I will ask at packet pick-up what number your are, and I'll track that down in transition. It'll be well nigh impossible to miss making contact, especially if we're both amongst the earliest of the birds! I'm very excited about this race --- although still a bit stunned at how it has all unfolded! I'm also mildly leery about another long drive, hoping that I'm not pushing things too much with the hip. We shall see about that in due course! I will have Lynn's cell phone with me, and the number is ---OOPS! (Thanks, Jeff!). And thanks again for the offer, which I am still mulling over. It does help to know that at the same time I would be clattering about, you would be, too! Arriving at races early is SOOOO nice! ![]() ![]() Edited by stevebradley 2011-08-19 6:15 PM |
