Sementi - 2011-08-22 2:30 PM Fall is in the air up here in northern Washington, for my Saturday morning ride to the Y it was a brisk 40 degrees, had to put on a long sleeve shirt on the way there, and should have worn it home as well. By the time I got my swim in and rode home my hands were numb and I had a chill that it took a very long shower to shake.

Drought is in the air, the leaves are falling due to drying up. It has only been in the mid 90's at 10pm so there is hope for cooler weather in October.

STEVE - Sorry to hear about your foot... are you icing it?  I am still putting together my race report, and am feeling pretty good today.  My hamstrings are a bit sore but overall I am just tired.  I don't seem to recover quickly anymore... it takes me a day or so to feel normal after getting up at 3am...

Thanks for the list of events. it gives me something to think about in terms of another race.

Will post later, it has been a hectic day at work and I don't know exactly when I am going to get out of here!

George,   I love the photos.  You did great.

Jeff, I am amazed at your schedule.

Steve, My toe is ok. It is funny because it hurts when I do certain things but on the whole it is fine.  I have been running (my version) and riding.  I have not been doing much swimming due to a confluence of circumstances closing pools around where I  live.  The summer camps have taken over the Y pool and it is all so irritating.  So I will go to Nations and do what I can. I am looking forward to meeting you and watching a pro in action.  It should be fun.  That is how I look at all of this.  It should be fun!!!!!  Just let me know what you want to do. Minimally we can meet up at the expo.  I can get up early on Saturday and go to see what is going on downtown  (that is Frederick speak for the "Big City").  As to the question about the swim start, I did not realize that it was changed until you said it.  I don't actually know what that means.  Maybe you can tell me.  Does that mean if you are slow you move to the end of the line?   That would be not good for me.  I don't really like being the last one off the course.  I really do run slowly (slow?).  I guess it really does not matter since they did not ask my opinion prior to making the decision(imagine that).  Whatever!!!  What do you think the wetsuit situation will be?  The website still thinks they will be legal.  Global warming is coming and the Potomac will heat up like every other body of water.  I am not sure I want it to happen before 9/11.  The wetsuit is a pain to deal with afterward but it is a measure of comfort.

My husband is saying dinner is ready.

Ellen

I think it'll be okay. In some respects this isn't new, but I just need to be sure of the root of the problem. But nothing for me today, just a lazy day of a couple of brief naps and three walks with Lynn and Luna. Tomorrow I will do Yoga in the a.m., then an open water swim from about 12:15-1:00 or so. Wednesday should see me pretty much back at it.

I did Cape Henlopen in '04, and it is fast but nice. A 1/4-mile ocean swim (that has been cancelled a couple of years), a flatly flat bike, and a 93.76% flat run, with the un-flat parts being hardly more than speed bumps.

I did MightyMan half-iron in '09, and they put on a very nice race. Never did the sprint, though, but am toying with the idea of the oly this year.

Another you might wabnt top look at is Bassman, and I think it is www.citytri.com. It is in the Pine Barrens, and so it to is mostly flat. A couple of years ago a sprint ran the same day as the half-iron, but they may have switched that around with the spring Bassman. Kind of like Gettysburg, the sprint had an overlong bike.

Glad you're feeling good, overall, but sorry you faced hecticness at work. May tomorrow be more mellow!

I too am cogitating on my race report.....and it may be a quick study this time. My West Point report was uber-long, and I got virtually no responses to it, so I'm thinking it was too long for most people to wade through. So, whatever I do for Mossman will be many times shorter -- I think. That is, can I execute brevity??

ELLEN -

I'm #2157, and I like that number. There is a whole "Athlete Support Platform" to explore, but my computer got balky before I could enter it. Rats. Somewhere on the A.S.P. is wave start info, so i want to try that again later and begin fantasizing as son as possible!

As for the start plan, it's a newish one for me. I know NYCT did it this year and with maybe 10 at a time. Beyond that, though, I think it has nothing to do with swim speed, seeing as how we haven't been asked about that or to even think about how we would seed ourselves if fast folks go earliest, and slowest folks go lastliest.

My guess is that it will be those little octet wavelets within a normal size wave. So if another race I might be in a M60+ wave going off at 7:10, that wave will now be broken into those octets. USAT rules say that waves have to be at least three minutes apart, but with those wavelets I think that rule will be superseded and it will just run continuously. Within each three-minute period, anyhow, there is room for lots of wavelets (are they 5 or 10 seconds apart?), so I don't see the swim-start process as dragging on any longer than if there were conventional waves.

I want a mid-range start just so there are lots of people on course before me that I can work on reeling in on the bike. At NYCT '09 there were the pros, then the elites, then older guys, so my bike was with virtually no one to track down because the true studs were waaaay far gone ahead. That was kind of cruddy. On the other hand, I was in one of thsoe early waves that truly enjoys the awesome tidal sweep of the Hudson, and my swim was 19-something for 1500 (I'm usually happy with around 30!!), so I must stop carping.

As for wetsuits, I am certain they will be legal. The rains the week before West Point got the lake there within wetsuit limits, and there's been more rain since, and race day is after all in about the middle of September, so I'm sayin' (prayin') wetsuits!!

You say the pools are closed around you? High time for tri-weekly field trips to the Potomac to get in those swims!!

Tentative plans will have me leaving Harrisonburg early Friday, but not so early that I get stuck in rush-hour traffic. Come to think of it, the expo doesn't open until noon, so I might linger in scenic Hburg until about 10; my maps say it is only about 75 to D.C. Then after that.......?? But I WILL start crafting a schedule and get that off to you asap.

It should be fun!!!!!

ELLEN again -

Let's see what I have learned since I last posted to you.....

I am seemingly in Wave 13, same as you. That is, my specific info says Wave 13, but the full swim wave schedule has F50+ in Wave 13, with M50+ being in waves 10, 11, and 12. So, already there is some confusion, but for both of us the start range is 7:00-7:45.

But then, that range is the same for Waves 1-18, with the start range listed as 7:45-8:30 for Waves 19-34. The new transition map has T-zone divided into two sides, one for early starts and one for late starts. I guess we know which side we will be on, anyhow, which is the more southerly of the two. FWIW.

The waves before M50+ are for elites and cadets and then M30-34 and M35-39. Right after Wave 13 come the M40-45, so it would behoove both of us to get to the front of whatever corral we are in, just to give that extra space between us and those guys.

The new specs have it as mini-groups of 10-12, separated by 15 seconds. That sounds quite civil, actually.

It should be fun!!!!!

Gang! It looks like everyone had good races this weekend....congrats! I'm in a major race lull right now with Pinehurst being my next race in October....I don't like going 2 months without racing....I may have to rethink that strategy next year.

I successfully survived the concert weekend with my college buddies so that is a bonus. Jumping back into more training this week since I didn't do jack over the weekend and Warrior Dash this Saturday. Right now all eyes are on Hurricane Irene as it is looking rather menacing and at this time poised to hit the East Coast. Not sure what that will bring to Charlotte, but either way it looks like I'm going to get extra muddy on Saturday!

Quick question...now that I have the TT bike, I find myself with not alot of daylight in the morning, and after work/dinner/getting the kid to bed, I run out of daylight in the evening as well. With that said, does it hurt anything to go the gym and do interval work on the spin bike? I try to position the bike as close as I can to mine, but tend to ride more in a road bike position. I save all my long rides for the weekend when I can get out early in the morning on my bike. Why is there not more time in the day?????

Any thoughts?

I lookd into Pinehurst yesterday when I learned that my planned final race of the season (Gettysburg) has been cancelled for this year. I'm sure Phurst was about Oct 15 last year, but now it is the 1st, which won't work. Rats.

As for the spin bike, it won't hurt -- unless you get the position all wrong. Having said that, I have never been on a stationary bike that wasn't my own perched on a trainer or rollers, but I think people can use one as a way to work on cadence, and especially cadence against pressure. That is, it's one thing to pedal furiously if the gearing is really soft, and another thing to get the sense of using increased watts to increase power and speed. So, leg strength would be enhanced on a psin bike set in a challenging fashion, and beyond that one would get an idea of what it feels like to work hard. So, give it a try and see how it suits you!

As for enough daylight hours in a day...........................

Aw, man -- Gettysburg has been cancelled until next season! I need my own season-ending event now!

I mentioned Bassman, and you should check it out. It is Sunday Oct 2, and is an "international" -- in its own case 0.5/29/4.2, all miles. I forgot to lot at the cost, but he (George) has very reasonable pricing. That will probably be my season-ender.

Feeling okay still?

See above to Alex, which says that Gettysburg is cancelled until '12. Argh!

But also, look at www.citytri.com for the fall Bassman in the Pine Barrens of NJ. It is 0.5/29/4.2, all in miles. Oct 2. JSYK!

Hey Steve,  I am feeling ok, I was looking at the Bassman to do, it seems like it would be a good season ending race for me as well.  I swam a bit this morning and rode the spin bike yesterday.  I use the spin bike at the gym quite a bit during the week as I get home from work pretty late so I do my long rides on the weekends and either ride on the trainer at home in the morning or use the spin bike at the gym.  Setup is definitely the most important aspect on the spin bike there isn't any give in the bike and the flywheel carries a lot of momentum once it gets going so any misalignment can quickly become problematic.

Cute "trick" with the bike elevation profile for Bassman. The first glance suggests it is very hilly, but then the left-side elevation numbers become obvious -- 20, 40, 60....feet! Thosea re widely-spaced, and then looking at the bottom shows the 29 tightly-spaced numbers for the miles. It's a great example of how a graph can be portrayed just by the scale and intervals that are used.

Yup, there is nothing at all climbable on the bike; it might be a Siamese twin of Mossman, separetd at birth. Mossman....Bassman.....they pretty much sound alike, too! The run actually has a couple of roller-type things, but virtually all of it is flat. The whole run is in the park, and is just about 90% shaded. The swim is shoe-horned into a small, pretty lake, and in many places the bottom is very visible.

If you are a tent person, it is incredibly easy to tent in the park and then drive 2-4 minutes to the race site. Rates are maybe about $20. You would have to drive a ways (20-30 minutes) to get dinner, but that's better than driving it early in the morning. There are several motels along the strip (can't remember the town; Absecom, maybe) where the restaurants are, and traffic in the area is sparse. Well, part of the drive from the park to the strip is back onto one of the highways, but only for about 5 or 6 miles.

I am looking at it seriously, as it would be a good low-key season-ender. We would visit Jane in NYC on the way down, and maybe play around the area for a day or so after. The other options are two I mentioned to you -- Cape Henlopen and MightyMan. The latter could give me a sprint on Sat and the oly on Sun, but the fees are fairly high.....and then there is the cost of Montauk itself.

Decisions, decisions!

Mossman photos -- 36 of 'em! Wowzers! (And I actually like a bunch of them!)

If curious, go to www.capstonephotostore.com, then scroll down to Park City Mossman, then use my bib - 194 - to get to my collection.

Quick notes:
1.) The ones where I'm emerging on the beach show me struggling with a right sleeve that didn't want to come off the wrist.
2.) The plethora of me with cap backwards clearly demonstarte why 62-year-olds shouldn't try to assume the look of the average 16-year-old punk kid. Where is my dignity and self-respect, anyway?? (It was worn "correctly" into the second half of the run, but all but two of the run photos were taken in the second half. Oh well.

Hope everyone is having a good week!  I got my pictures from Mossman as well.  All on the bike I think I might get a couple of them... who knows...

I am trying to decide on my training rides for Saturday (Sunday looks like a washout because of the storm)  Here are my group choices...
1.  56 mile Toughman route with my Tri Club fast to med-fast pace (will most likely get dropped as it is a pretty hilly course and from what I know of the group very good riders)
2.  25 mile Westchester Tri route with another group from my Tri Club Beginner to Intermediate pace (should be able to stay with most of them - it is termed a no drop ride...)
3.  46 miler with the Westchester Cycling Club - C+ pace (13-14mph) some good climbs 3000ft of elevation
4.  28 miler with the Westchester Cycling Club - C pace (14mph) few hills and traffic

Any thoughts from people on what to choose... it is a pure training ride since I don't have a race up coming for awhile.

Thanks

Alex

On my to-do list today is to look through your photos -- although I had the pleasure of seeing you several times on the bike in person!

My vote would be for the second one, the Westchester course. being a no-drop ride is nice, and the course has one very challenging hill, named after a girl who was a cancer victim, I think. There is an in-race competition for it each year for the quickest ascent, so it should provide a good bit of spice mid-ride! (I think it is about 8-10 miles in, actually....and it is making me crazy that I can't remember the name!!)

Next choice, but close behind the above, would be the 46-miler, just because I think you have the itch to go longer than last weekend's 25er. And while it may not have a "named" climb, 3000' of elevation is nothing to sneeze at. And C+ is well within your range, yes?

You are SO fortunate to have a tri club AND a cycling club as part of your "support crew"!

Great photos!! I think the ones that end in 1044, 1895, 1210, and 1900 are especially good.

It's funny how race photos work. I had four or five coming out of the water, you had none. You had about ten along the straightaways; I had two. Go figure!

Last week at West Point -- no bike photos. In their defense, the photographers probably didn't relish sitting by the roadside in the deluge, but hey -- other people got THEIR bike photos taken. (He says, petulantly.)

Then there was MightyMan Montauk, where the "signature" photo is of the cyclists passing in front of the lighthouse on the point. On the first loop I could see the photo guy --- but he was messing wth the camera. On the second loop --- he was no longer there. Wahhhh! No lighthouse photo for Stevie!!

ALEX once more -

It's not conclusive, but I think Litchfield was wetsuit-legal. The swim photos are on pages 12&13 of lost and found, and there were wetsuited persons in both blue and green caps, suggesting that tere wasn't just one wave for those who preferred their suits.

Parts of the run were on trailish surfaces. Yech. Parts looked nicely-treed. Yay!

Overall, though, I have ZERO regrets about doing Mossman; I think they put on a terrific race, with those minions-from-hell-mosquitoes being the only drawback.

Decide on a ride yet?

I'm still trying to remember the named climb at Westchester, without cheating and going to the website.

How about Christina's Climb? That came to me secondarily, after exhausting M names, which was my first instinct. I'm giving myself until Saturday morning -- and then I cheat!

I think this weekend is Cranberry Country Triathlon Festival, not far from Cape Cod, with races on Saturday and Sunday. The forecast makes me think the Sunday one won't happen, or that maybe it will included with the Saturday race. Had Mossman been this coming Sunday, instead, I don't think the swim in Long Island Sound would've happened!

And where has everybody gone??

It's been a good training week for me.

Yesterday I rode with some fast girls and they kicked my butt! It was a great ride though. 45 miles in 3 hours with some good climbs. I rode about my average flat route pace but with hills. I had never drafted before and they decided to teach me how One rode ahead and another rode beside me and coached me on how to stay on and worked with my cadence. It was really fun and a challenge. When we were on the last road about 10 miles from home I told them to go ahead so they could go at their regular pace. I'm looking forward to riding with them again next week.

Today I went on an 11 mile run. Overall it was good. The last 30 min were tough though. I think yesterdays bike was still tiring me out.

Sounds like there was some good racing this past weekend. Great job!

Hi All,

I have been reading about what you are all doing and I am sort of jealous.  I have been working and that is about it.  I did get to the pool yesterday and did 2000 yards.  I am hoping to have a pretty big weekend and cram all my training into a couple of days.  That is a pattern.  I have been trying to figure our how to motivate community college students to love algebra and precalculus.  It is a challenge.  But I really like the kids.  They are so interesting and enjoyable.  I learn so much from them.  I am not sure who the teacher really is.  I may know more about that night's lesson but they are a lot more street savy.  But I digress.  We are waiting for Irene and hoping for the best.

good luck to all this weekend.

Johanne,

Right now they say that the storm will stay to the east of us so we will get rain but not the high winds.  We'll see. But thanks for your thoughts.  I am going to ride in the morning and then run some before the storm arrives.  We're having a hurricane and an earthquake in one week .  The rest of the year is going to be pretty boring.
