Awesome! Drive safely! The drivers around here are crazy. If you want to load up on carbs before the race you should go to Carmine's downtown (if that is where you are staying) it is a great Italian place. I may convince the wife we need to do that as well

I will check around. I think that is in the Crystal City area which has quite a few 'chain' options plus a couple local things. There is a fireworks pizza place which I have heard is pretty good. You are up near Rosslyn which I haven't spent a lot time around but you are close to Metro so you could go pretty much anywhere from that point. You are close to the finish line which will be nice.

Morning, everyone!  Easy bike this morning + core, and then Z1/Z2 run this afternoon.  I'm enjoying the warm weather, and so are my children.  It's supposed to be in the 70s all week.  I'm sure it will be back down in the 30s for Halloween.  LOL

Just curious ......  What brand of goggles do you wear?  I've worn Zoggs Predator Flex for the last 2 years, but they're expensive to replace, and the skin on my upper eyelids feels as if it's getting damaged or something.  It's really sensitive and sore after I take off the goggles.  Don't even get me started on the goggle marks.  They stick around for a couple hours.  Thinking of trying TYR 2.0s, but I'm worried those will bother the eyelids even more.

It's supposed to get colder here too for Halloween.  Wonder if I can get the kids to drag me around in the wagon.

I wear Aquasphere Kayennes.  Love em and you can find them for about $20 a pop.

Nice!!!

Lets see.  Saturday I rode part of the Oilman course and drove the other part.  Kelly should be familiar with the course as it's mostly on the IMTX course.  Pretty much you start just SE of the national forest and then hang a left at a small town called Richards instead of going through.  It then meets back up with the IMTX course before cutting off part to head back over to Lake Conroe instead of Lake Woodlands.  Pretty much a lot of rollers.  Nothing too steep.  A few hills that are longer than I'm accustomed to but that is easy to work through.  Really I'd love to ride out there every weekend instead of the mostly flat and boring terrain around my house.

Today was what felt like the easiest 3k I've ever done in the pool.  About 2k in this lady with a TON of perfume on gets into the lane next to me.  YUCK.  Could taste the stuff it was so strong.  Really wanted to thump her on the head for that. ttt

There are no hills on the IMTX course.  You should be able to tear the Oilman bike apart.

jarvy01 - 2012-10-22 7:44 AM Swim & strength today.  Swim workout called for various TTs.  I felt like complete monkey butt doing them, and I kept berating myself in my head for being so out of shape.  Once the workout was done, I looked over my splits, and I managed to average 1:28 or 1:27/100 yds (SCY) for all of the TTs except the last 100 all out.  Pleasantly surprised with my times.  I know they'd be faster if I were working on my swim right now, so I'm happy that I've at least maintained some swim fitness on minimal swim training (means I don't really need to swim more right now either...YAY!).

Think positive!  You are a good swimmer, be proud of that.

Ride on trainer this morning.  I was able to creep into Z2 for the first time since Cedar Point, and it felt great.  Easy run later today.  I may squeeze in a KB workout as well.  We'll see how much energy I have this afternoon.  I'm committing to potty training my youngest, and that may take my remaining energy reserves.

First question - I am looking to buy a tri bike after the holidays, and I'd like to get used to it this winter.  Do you all use your triathlon bikes on your trainers?  Or do you use your road bike on your trainers?  Do you use a different wheel for trainer?  I am not looking to buy fancy wheels, aero helmets, or any of that jazz.  Just a bike upgrade & new shoes.  I will get a different tire for the trainer if it makes sense to do that.

Second - How do you estimate calories burned on the bike?  On the swim?

I ride both my Road and Tri bike on the trainer. As far as buying a bike This is a great time of year to buy them as most 2012's are marked down because 2013's are coming in. If you can start shopping now. I think it all depends on your price range as well.  If you can tri to size bikes in your area and then shop online for them chances are it will be much cheaper. I bought my Cannondale Slice from NYTRO on Closeout last year a $3500 for $2500 shipped free no tax as NY has 8.75% taxes on purchases. NYTRO has alot of QR bikes as well.

As far as calories I really don't count what I burn as I can not meausre that I count what I put in during a ride. And then judge calorie intake by how my energy levels felt.  For IM I was drinking one Bottle of Perform per HR  (one drink every 15 mins finishing a bottle in one HR) and I would sip off my Gel Bottle every 30 mins. One 20oz gel bottle would last 3HRs hand have 400 Cals in it.

For the swim I trained by eating nothing prior to any morining swim. I eat my normal race day breakfast

Ensure - 2:30 am

Ensure- 4:30 am

1/2 Choclate chip muffin

1 honey stinker waffle

1 bottle of GU Brew

1 Roctane 15 mins before the start.

Yeh, now and in the next few months all 2012 and any leftover 2011 or older stuff will go on massive sale.  You could always check around local bike shops, some have layaway, if you find something you really want, but can't pay for it til after the holidays.  Nytro does have alot of options, but as of right now, not sure they are the best price ... stalk a bunch of sites and keep track of stuff.  Might want to go in to get a determination of what size you will need so when they do come down you can jump on them. Alot of shops will list bikes on ebay as well, cheap and no tax.

I would ride the bike you intend to use on the trainer as much as possible.  It will train the muscles you will you for the race and also get you used to the position.  The position will be different that a road bike with aeros.

3k in the pool today.  Kinda dragging.

Yes to tri bike on trainer.  My feeling is that unless you have 2 bikes set up the same fit wise it's better to use the one you intend to use in the race.  I don't have a different wheel on, but I do switch out tires for training (Gatorskins) and racing (Conti 4000s).

I wish I could buy a bike right now, but it's not in the cards.  2 mortgages (our old house hasn't sold) + Christmas around the bend = no bike for me.  I'm gifted a rather larger sum of money each year for Christmas.  1/2 goes toward our debt, and 1/2 goes toward triathlon and personal purchases.  This year I'm getting a tri bike and new cycling shoes.  The rest will be put in savings for tri clothes, running shoes, goggles, race entry fees, etc., so that $ doesn't have to come out of the family pot.  I don't want an aero helmet, and I don't care about race wheels.  I do care about a quality bike fit, and I will pay good $ for that!!!!

Considering what you have said and your open mindedness. Go to a trustworthy shiop if you know one hand have them fit you to a bike.

I just bought my wife a new Tri bike and she had no idea what she wanted. No Brands no Colors. So she was able to sit on 6 different models and brands of bike s to find one that worked for her she ended up with a BMC Time Machine TM02. She loves it.

But the Wrench at the shop said its one of his best fits because she did not want a certain brand or color and he had to fit her to that bike. He was allowed to find a bike that fit her which worked much better.

I would get fitted as well and you might find a better deal with an online saler. However, some LBS's don't put there deals online, at least around here they don't. I just happened to walk into mine and they had a sale on the FELT's and TREK's. I also know that TREK as 12 months interest free financing. You don't have to buy a TREK you can buy any bike they have in the TREK store.

I plan on using the tires I have on my bike now for the trainer and then getting some new tires for the season like some GP4's or something similar. That way I am not wasting the tires I have.

I'm like your wife - couldn't care less about brand or color.  My goal is the best fit possible!  After riding a road bike that is too large for me, I'm ready for a quality fit.  It will be interesting to see if I perform better with a proper fit.
