everlong - 2012-10-25 7:54 AM Most bike shops will eat the cost of the fitting if you buy from them. Also it's a great time to buy the close outs. I got a $3800 2010 Guru Magis for only $2300 in January of 2011 and the fitting was free with the bike purchase. It was also at one of the most recommended shops in the area for a fitting. With winter here you can definitely haggle and getting the fitting thrown in before you even go is a no brainer for them to get the business.

I intend to buy from the shop that performs the fitting, so maybe you're right and they'll give me a price cut since I'm doing my business there.  I'm going to go in after the New Year and hope they still have some 2012s (or 2011s) left for purchase.

What I have also seen is that the shop will charge you for fit and then deduct the charge for the fit from the price of the bike if you purchase at the shop.

You really should get a fit BEFORE you buy a bike.

That's what my bike shop did - I paid $150 for the fit, but since I bought from them they deducted it from the bike.  I thought it was a pretty good deal.  They also do free adjustments for me, and only charge me if I need something replaced.

uhcoog - 2012-10-25 11:53 AM You should be fairly well covered then.  Cervelo is long and low, Felt's new B series appears to be more tall according to what I read on ST today (older models also long and low), and Trek is really neutral.  Seems like a good place to look.

There was an article on slowtwitch about bike fit and covered long & low vs. short & narrow.  It was very interesting and made a lot of sense to me.  I never thought about bikes that way.

Here is my issue with using shop guys.... they tend to only recommend brands they carry.  Maybe we're lucky here in Houston in that we have one high end guy that works independent of a bike shop so he doesn't try to sell you anything.  I went to him when I got my Orbea.  The other really respected guy sells custom Gurus so if you tell him up front you're not in the market for custom you're set.  He however will try and sell you on component upgrades when you go back with the bike in hand.

Jen, FIST is the system developed by Dan Empfield at Slowtwitch.  It's good stuff.  So is ReTul which is motion capture tech stuff.  The guy I went to is Serrotta certified and he used 360 degree video as well to capture angles and cadence and whatnot.  All 3 are good systems.  My feeling is that fit is as much an art form with give and take from the cyclist as it is science.

The bike shop's site linked an article on ST about FIST system (Dan's article, I believe).  They use Dartfish video analysis (have no idea what that is).  This bike shop has the best reputation in Ohio, and they send representatives to lots of the local races around here.  They were bike support for CTC preview day at Cedar Point.  On their website they sell Trek, Cervelo, and Felt bikes, but who knows what is in the shop.

Jen -- take a look at this -- http://somerandomthursday.blogspot.com/2011/01/bike-fitting.html#!/2011/01/bike-fitting.html -- its my blog post about my bike fit compete with pictures and dart fish diagrams.

Thank you so much for this, Kelly.  It is very informative and helpful.  Major difference in your position in the before v. after shots!  Did it make a difference in your comfort level?  Power output?  Speed?

I am scheduling a fitting before I even take a peek at any bikes.  I know I am too sprawled out on my road bike, and I really desire the comfort of a proper fit.  Could riding a bike that is too big for me negatively impact my performance?  I know it's all about the engine, and I am always working to improve that, but I wonder if I will see better results on a bike that fits me properly.

Hey everyone,

Sorry for the long MIA, life has been crazy busy lately. Thanks for the messages and gifts! After consultation with 3 doctors, I am going to monitor these lymph nodes for the next 3 months and see if they change. I really do not want the aggressive surgery and they are not ready to do the surgery. We will see what happens at my next ultrasound and then make decisions. I am also going to set up an appt at Memorial Sloan Kettering and get their opinion as well. So that is my update!!!

I have been doing all my training and it has been my sanity! I hope to be back more often now!! Good luck to Jeremy and Larkin at MCM! Have a great time!

Good to hear an update! I continue to pray for you! Thanks for the encouragement and hopefully this storm can hold off.

Went to the elementary school to pick up something from the office, and Freddy ran into the door frame.  Just spent the last 3 hours at the ER.  7 stitches later......I think we need to buy one of the rooms there, as this is two times in one month!  Glad today's an off day.  I am drained, and so is poor Freddy!

That's no bueno.

So since we've been on the topic of fitting I just got the evite to my club's next meeting.  We're sponsored by a local tri shop and the local custom Guru builder's shop.  The clientele don't really cross so it's not that big of an issue IMO (I think the tri shop has an opposite opinion).  Anyway the custom guy is one of the 2 most respected fitters in town and the tri shop fitter just got back from ReTul last week.  We invited the latter to speak on fitting at the meeting instead of the former.  Genius I tell you.  Undecided

Good luck guys on the marathon this weekend!  Post of pick of you and your medals after!!!  And can't wait to read the race report.

While it sucks that I cannot run it this year, my feet hurt so much from doing a physicaly inventory the last 2 days walking around concrete floors all day.  May actually take the weekend off and just rest!

That's not a bad idea especially after concrete floors for 2 days.

So, we're dealing with yet another "100 year" weather event in the northeast.  I just sent this e-mail to IMFL:

I'm sure you've already received this question, however are there any plans to allow participants traveling from the north east to check in late (on Friday) if flights are cancelled / delayed due to Hurricane Sandy?  I am scheduled to fly out of Hartford on Wednesday and it appears that there is good chance the flight may be cancelled or delayed a day or more.  Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
