I had a good run yesterday.  Not too fast but a bit faster than I had planned.  Afte my mile warm-up my final 2.5 miles were at 7:46 pace.  Nothing to write home about, but it does bump us to the first page.

Back from the UK...and dying to get back into the groove.  I only managed 3 workouts while over there...and none of them were very impressive.  I did probably walk about 20 miles in the 2.5 days I spent in London though - so hopefully that counts for something.  I walked so much my IT band was really starting to tighten up on me.  Of course....now I'm fighting the London/Travel funk and trying to figure out what time zone it is.  Hopefully this cold or whatever is gone by tomorrow because I'm running - no matter what.   Glad to be back home.  Hope everyone's training is going well.

Glad you had a good trip, Malcom.  I'm like you.  Getting away for awhile is nice, but I'm usually dying to get back into a workout groove afterwards.  Hope you can kick that jet lag quickly.

For the benefit of David's discussion I do have a couple of question regarding bike gear.  I know some of this is personal preference, but I'd like to hear some opinions.

What type of tires do you ride on?  I raced on a pair of vittoria rubina pro slicks last year.  I will be replacing these as soon as the weather improves enough to get outside.  I'm looking at the michelin pro2 and 3, the grand prix 4000s and a few others.  Anyone ridden a good reliable pair?

The next question is sorta on the same topic.  Are a set of good aero wheels worth it?  I rode the stock wheels that came with my tri bike all last year and am contemplating an upgrade but I'm not real sure that the time savings vs. cost is worth it

Since I found this before David, I'll comment first.

I saved this link that has an "expert" talking about tirs and tubes and it includes of study measuring the friction coeficient of certain combinations.

http://jandariccimunn.blogspot.com/2008/03/prioritizing-your-cycling-equipment.html

My road bike has the Grand Prix 4000's for its race wheels.  They don't see a whole lot of use anymore since I race my fairly expensive ($5,500 retail) tri bike.

My tri bike has Michelin Ironman tires.  Though, they sound good, they are not included in the study info from the link above.  The article does make clear though that better tire are certainly faster.

You did not mention tire pressure but I put mine on the high side (and that is a bit of a gamble at my 200lbs of riding weight).  But, I like to think that I ride "ligth", that is I am careful and hitting bumps and rocks and the sort.

I have the Zipp 404 rims, spokes, and hubs.  I am quite sure those wheels are significantly faster the my road bike race wheels.  They do add the physcological benefit of feelin like I am among the advantaged riders.  I guess them to add about 1mph between the speeds of 21-24 mph range.

David has a lot to say about wheels.  You might need a few back and forths to get all the info you could use out of him.

bike gear, i love it!

haha ok

tires.
if you want a good, all around tire, for racing and training, the three i would look to are: the michelin pro race two or three (the 2 was one of the fastest tires you could buy last year and are AWESOME), and the ones you are using. very good as well

for training specific, my one and only training tire from here on out is the vittoria zaphino, 'nuff said.

wheels, my thoughts here, unless you do cycling races, get the aero helmet first (unless you dont use aerobars, then, get those before anyting else).
given a tri or road bike with the bars, go for the helmet before the wheels. about the same time gains, but about $--------- cheaper.
as far as wheels go, depending on the set, you can pick up anywhere from .3-1mph, the windier the course the more time you gain.
a disk and deep front is going to be fastest, followed by deep rear and front, followed by shallower front and deep rear, followed by shallow front and rear.
or in other words, from fastest to slowest. (i'll stick with zipp sinse most people know their wheels)

disk/808
808/404
404/404
ect.

now the cheap way to get around this, get a disk cover for the rear (yes just as fast, just a tad heavier), and a nice front. or, the best bang for the buck, get nice tires to race on, aero helmet, and a disk cover, comes out under 300 or right around, and then save the rest for training, races, or a sick bike fit, which is where almost all of the time is gonna come from anyway.
your body is something like 85-95% of what the wind sees anyway.

I speculated that was what prompted your comments on your workout log area.

Well, us Central Ohioans are happy to retain Colorado's loss.

Nope.  It worked out well last year to have my first ride be the Delaware Duathlon.  Though I doubt I'll wait that long this year, I have no plans as of yet to get outside.

alright all, lets get a bit of a challenge going on.

this time around, we are going to set some training goals for ourselves, on a week by week basis.

we'll start weeks on sun, end sat night. lets keep this going through march and see how people do. the goal here is to set some total weekly goals for yourself in the one, two, or three sports you are doing, and then we'll follow how each other are doing, and check back at weeks end to see how we did in hitting our numbers. i'm not concerned with what each persons totals look like, but rather how much of your goal you ended up hitting. if you have time or distance goals in each sport, or simply want to get a number of hours per week, thats fine.

Mine are:
Totals:
Swim:17,000-20,000 yards
Bike:approx 10-12hrs
Run:36-miles

Good morning guys and girls,

I love the idea of weekly goals. I am only doing some run and a few bike things this year. So my schedule for the week will be:  5 hours of running
                    3 hours on the bike
                    4 hours of strength training
Also my diet has not just gone off track it has left the track and fallen into a big ditch but I will be correcting that today. I am not doing much today as I have a huge Birthday cake sugar hangover. Everyone have a great week

Chris

Hey I like challenges.  My goals for the week:

Swim: 8000 yds

Bike: 110 miles

Run: 21 miles

I already got a good start on these today.  3200 yds in the pool and 50 miles on the bike (that was one long trainer ride

A huge hangover on Sunday has put me a day behind already.

Challenge numbers.

Run 25 miles.

Bike 80 miles.

Does not look real impressive, but I have a good shot at successfully meeting it, plut my emphasis in March is to get in more shorter but intense runs.

I see that I have fallen behind in the pages here.  I am trying to get online more, but just haven't had the time.  I did manage to get a shortest run in today at 4.34 miles.  It was slow but I was just trying to enjoy the beatiful weather since the east coast was getting slammed with snow.

I'm going to lower mine again because I honestly don't have those numbers as real goals.  I just looked at my February, which was a good month of real commitment.

My averages per week were: 62 miles biking and 21 miles running.  I planned on having March be a bit more intense with probably some more rest days.

So, I am going to keep my March goal to be about the same as February.

Run: 20 miles per week.

Bike: 65 miles per week. (and I'll add weight training)

Weights: 75 minutes per week.

Not big numbers, but something I really believe in.

Hey everyone!!

Goals for this month:  Is to not go crazy.  Lacrosse season starts on Monday - So I will pretty much be a single parent until June, my husband is the high school varsity coach and 7th grade team's coach.  My son will be starting soccer and lacrosse and my daughter will be starting soccer.  Just call me the taxi mom.

My goal is to maintain working out at least 6 days a week.  I'm happy with the progress I've made.  I still need to weigh in and check body fat, had to move it back till next week.

Things must be improving - I really should get a new swim suit.  The one I bought in October is too BIG!! Yea!

Down fall right now is that I'm always hungry.

Congrats on the continued weight loss!  Being always hungry is a great thing!  Means your engine is up and running at a much higher level than it was before - I bet your RMR has increased.

I'm not sure about the goals for this week - my goal is to get back in the groove, and have a week of my normal workouts - while I get adjusted to this time zone and shake the travel crud.  Had a nice comfortable run this morning, but Sat and Monday's workouts kicked my arse completely!!  Hoping to get into the pool this afternoon for the first time in about 10 days.

looks good everyone.

getting back into the swing of things/just staying consistant is half the battle, and as you progress, the only thing that really changes is the amount of you sustain on a day to day basis (if that is a goal of yours).

as an example, my first season i ave during the season aabout 7-10 hours per week, the next about 10-12, this past season 12-15, and right now i am sitting on 19ish. the point of this is that each season feels about like the one before, but i am doing more.

staying with it day in and day out, even for 30 min will do more for you than having big ups and downs from week to week. i understand thingsl ike family, work, life all get in the way(heavens knows it does for me all too often and frankly most of the time is much more important).
keeping things even as much as you can though will help on the weight loss side of things, from a fitness side, and mentally is much easier to do, so for those of you saying that you would like to simply keep things consistent, good work!

jumped on a scale this moring, have been hovering in the 149-151 range for the last few days, feeling good (legs a little tired right now).

hope everyone else is doing well.
