Link to my race report for my 10K if anyone is interested: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=161491

Not my speediest of races but I think I did pretty well after a very busy month.  One of my goals was to have a steady race - run all 6.2 miles consistently - which is something I've struggled with in the past.  At least I was sucessful on that front.  I even had a little kick left for the end and managed to pass a few folks in the last 800m or so.

Emily,

Congrats to you on your 10K as well.  Looks like the team did pretty good this weekend.

I hit one of the big running milestones tonight.  I not only ran the longest distance in my life, but I also hit under the 10 min/mile mark.  WOOHOO!!!!  Cool

The distance is just shy of my first race distance, but I now have more confidence that I can actually run the distance.  Hope everyone's training this week goes well.

Also, I have bought a few goodies for my bike, and I need to get them installed.  Picked up a set of aero bars, tri specific saddle and a fast forward seatpost.  I'm going to get everything installed and then start tweaking the fit, unless I just can't get it, then I'll take her to the LBS.

That's awesome!! Congratulations. And I'm jealous of the aero bars - I think I'm going to get some this week too. Good luck with it!

I'm starting to freak out a little bit. I'm still really sick and worried about my training. My first sprint is in less than three weeks, but I couldn't run yesterday because I can't breathe very well right now. I'm supposed to swim today, so I'd hoped to make it a swim/run brick to catch up, but I still feel like I'm breathing through mud. I don't feel like I have a lot of time to take off though, so I'm hoping to go tonight and just take it slowly. Yucky!

Great job on the running milestone!!!

Any hints on the swimming to running transition? I got out of the pool this morning after swimming and nearly walked into a wall my legs were so wobbly.

Maybe you are kicking too much/hard during the swim?

Most likely. Also, in the last 50-100m of the swim, ease back a bit. The extra 10,15 seconds won't kill you, and better to ease back and get control of your breathing and legs before you get out of the water.

Jenna,
Just take a lesson from me and take care of yourself. I kept training when I was hacking up green stuff and ended up with bronchitis in less than a week - and I never get sick. I took 5 days off and then came back to it. Didn't loose too much ground. And haven't had any setbacks since.

Went for a ride this morning and then had to run for the bus - in heels. Felt like a brick workout.

What are some good ways to work on just my kick? I think if I was just trying to swim and focus on my kick I would stop breathing or sink... I forget to breath a lot.

Dryland straight leg scissor kicks.

And, lay on your side. Take your lower arm, and stretch it out along the ground, palm down. Rest your head on your arm, and use your obliques (side muscles) to raise your feet a little bit. Replicate that in the pool and kick, rolling your head up to breathe.

Lay on your back in the pool, arch your back slightly and kick. Put on hand up over your head so you don't run into stuff.

The kick should originate from the hips, not the knees, the entire motion is kind of like playing crack the whip on skates. It starts with the hip, the knee will naturally bend a very small bit, then the entire leg straightens and kind of "snaps".

Hush, I'm whispering. It appears everyone is sleeping.

Had a run this morning and increased run portion to 8 and 1s.

Day off tomorrow.

Group ride with the Toronto Triathlon Club Sat morning and then a run off the bike.

And a short run Sunday with the kids in tow.

Good luck to our racer this weekend (cgunz), and I hope everyone else has a great training and relaxing weekend! It has been a bit quiet this week, but the training logs look pretty decent. for those not racing, we've all got races coming up, so keep up the consistency!

I'm so bummed!! I just heard that they moved the date of the Michigan Tri from Sep 6 to Aug 30. That was supposed to be my first OLY and now I can't make it. The only other OLY taking place in Ontario or Michigan that I can see on Labour Day weekend now is the Niles, MI triathlon but that's a bit further than I wanted to go. I could maybe switch to the Wasaga Beach triathlon the following weekend, but that's the weekend of my son's birthday and would cause a whole other ripple effect... I don't know what to do!

Well, that was fast. I just found a race in Milton that weekend! I don't know why it didn't come up in any of my other searches, but now I'm SO excited. That works out even better than the Michigan Tri anyways. Want to do it with me, Fi??

biking question... i grew up bmx bike racing where you spend most of your time standing up. I found that out of habit I stand up to bike uphills. Is this not as energy effecient? at what point to most people stand up?

I'm doing the Guelph tri that weekend (Sept 5th). It's too bad they don't have OLY there. But it is a longer sprint (750/30/7.5).
My race is on the Sat so if I don't end up getting out of the city after that then I will come see you at Milton.

Glad you found your race.

Fi

p.s. Divorce stuff is moving fwd so should be able to buy my bike in July.

I knew you were already racing on Saturday, so I was just kidding about joining me on Sunday. Although that would be super cool! I just thought it was funny that it's so close to where you are. We'll probably end up racing together at some point! Can't wait to hear about your bike.

So, how was everyone's weekend? I was helping my wife's dance studio run a competition (Irish Dance) all weekend, so it was either there or training, I barely even ate!

I'll be checking out everyone's logs later today, and I don't see any RR's from the 10k yet?

How was everyone's Monday? I signed up for a Masters Swim class at the 50m outside (heated) pool that's literally at the end of my street. $150/month for 3 sessions a week - will likely just do 2 though. Still a good deal. So $300 for two months - July 6th till Aug 28th. Works in nicely with my two sprints (aug 8th and Sept 5th). They swim between 1500 and 4000m a session. Will be good to have some coaching on the new shoulder.

Had a massage tonight - just 45mins on shouldes, back and buttocks.

We were supposed to get rain the last two days but it hasn't really come yet. Although calling for thunder/lightening next two days. Will assess in the am for my bike ride.

Have a good night.

I took a complete day off today for the first time since I started training. I'm currently eating fudge and thinking about going to bed soon. I'm not getting up early tomorrow to work out either! Will definitely workout tomorrow night though. I'm thinking swim/run!

I too am taking a couple days off.  I did something to my back on Saturday and it was out of alignment.  A quick trip to the chiropractor today seemed to help.  They told me to take it easy for at least 24 hours.  I'm going to put the bike back on the trainer tomorrow night and try it to see how the back feels.  That way I can watch my Red Wings win Lord Stanley's Cup tomorrow night!!!!!!!!

Pish. You are going to be SORELY disappointed. There WILL be a game 7. (And if the dead wings win, I'm kicking you out of the group. j/k)

For trisprint- Most people stand up when they can't effectively spin up the hill any more. The reason most people don't stand up, is that it isn't as effective to stand up and rock the bike to climb as it is sitting in the saddle. If you watch the TdF, they will stand when necessary, but as soon as they can, they are back on the saddle, it's just more energy efficient.

Well, you got half your wish right.  There is going to be a game 7.  Too bad for you, but I'm not going to leave the group.  :-)

My back finally felt good enough to at least get out and run tonight.  I think I could have went longer, but it was going for 11:00 when I stopped.

Our thread was almost at the bottom of the list.  Thought I would bump it back up.

My training will be spotty this weekend.  We're leaving to go camping on Friday, but I plan on bringing the running shoes and swim suit, as well as the mountain bike.  Don't know how much time I'll spend in the water though.  Still too cold and I don't own a wet suit yet.   Hope everyone's week is going good.

Good that you're getting back out there a bit. Also good that you are self monitoring and avoiding making it worse.

Have fun camping and working out, and don't worry, even if the wings win I still want you in the group. They won't, though...

Pfft... You think Sid the Kid with his little porn 'stache can handle the pressure of Game 7 at the Joe? Zetterberg will make him look like he's still playing Timbits hockey. I bet Crosby even tries to slash him - again!

We should make this a bet of some sort. If the Penguins win, Kevin and I will do some sort of John-designed workout. If the Wings win, we get to set your goal pace for a workout.
