another noob question... what kind of crankset is recommended for a course like the FL70.3? i have been training with a compact double, as its really hilly around here. im also planning on using a set of bontrgaer aeolus on race day and i need to get a rear cassette. thoughts?

nutrition pointers for the heat? it has rarely gotten over 60 here since last september...

A:  Since getting my Cervelo S1 compact, I'm running a 50/36 with a 12/27 rear on 172.5mm crank arms.  I also live in an area that has some good hills and find this set up to work good.  I've actually plotted out the complete "new" 2010 course on Map My Tri and there is basically only a 150' elevation difference over the complete course.  Thus, you'll never be out of your big ring.  All you need is a good aero position to cut any head wind and you should be ready to roll.  I've been putting in rides of 45 to 55 miles over courses with 800 to 1000' elevations, so I think this will translate okay to the Orlando course.

As for event day nutrition and hydro, I'm going nearly all Hammer Nutrition.  Used Hammer for some Olympic's and really like their products.  I'm a larger 215lb guy and will look to stay in the 250 to 300 cal/hr replinishment rate, mainly on the bike.  Using Hammer Sustained Fuel mixed in a concentration with Hammergel on the bike, with additional Hammergel, plus Cytomax hydration and Endurolyte Tabs.  As I get to the run I'll switch over to lesser callories and watch any GI issues and balance my water and sport drinks.  I am not a Gatoraid user since HFCS does not agree with my GI over a long period of time.  Plus I like to get a little protein source working with my carbs when I'm out moving for more than 4 - 5 hours.  Thus I'll use a liquid hydration that offers a mix of carbs and protein.  Will just have to watch the heat and judge my pace with my intake.

Hope this helps.

I ran a 52/39/30 - 12/25 the last two years and was fine, I never needed the small ring up front, but it was on my Madone.
I'd love to go back and try my 54/39 - 11-26 Sram Red on my NEW Argon.

Anyone know when bib numbers come out?  Just curious...also, would I be crazy to buy a trisuit there on Saturday for the race on Sunday?  I need a trisuit and figured I would just get it while I am down there.

I would be cautious about ANY new equipment the day before an event like this.  What if your new tri suit feels great in the dressing room but then by mile 30 of the bike you discover that you are chafing in some...ahem...very sensitive spot!

A week from tomorrow my bike leaves for Florida via TriBike!!! So now I am trying to mentally prepare myself for the pain of....THE TAPER!

We're staying in a cabin at Ft. Wilderness...  maybe we'll try to hit the swim too.  Thursday and Saturday if I'm following this correctly?  And any plans on dinner yet?  We were thinking about just cooking at the cabin, but we're game for a group function.

My pre-race jitters are starting to set in! I'm starting to worry that I won't have the right gear, that I didn't do the right training, that my bike won't make it safely.... eeeek!

This will be my first HIM and I have felt good about my training.  However, I did a 60 mile ride yesterday in the GA heat and followed it up with a 30 minute run.  The ride went well but the transition to the run was tough with the heat.  Heart rate went up and felt some heat exhaustion.  I'm sure hydration was the culprit.  I drank 60 oz of cytomax and 40 oz of water with a gel thrown in every hour.  I know I needed more water, but the rest stops had their water turned off.  Is the water the culprit?  and if so how much more do you guys normally intake?  Good luck to everyone!  I will need it.

Doing a 68 mile ride @ 7AM on Sunday leaving from Oakland Charter Elementry school. If anyone is interested.  All of the Disney Course with the exception of the portion inside the park which is difficult due to roads on World Drive don't have a shoulder and a lot of traffic.

I went to Fort Wilderess Campground today  to check out the swim and the run.  You have to park in front of the entrance and take a bus to get to beach where the swim takes place.  They do not allow cars back there.  This was very easy to do if you want to check things out early in the week.  Go to the font gate of Fort Wilderness and tell them you want to check out the park. You park a few yards from where you enter the park and take the purple bus to the back to the beach area. The beach area is very nice.  Today the water was very calm.  I saw some of the run which leaves transistion heads first out on a bike path.  Maps shows we do a loop 3 times.  Looked a little narrow.

On race day and for packet p/u you have to park in the doppy or grumppy parking lots @ the Magic Kingdom and take a shuttle bus over to Ft. Wilderness. You cant even go into Ft. Wilderness at all!! Remember this so you dont get stuck on race day.
Also, sounds like you only saw the first "bits" of the run that are on golf cart paths, they are very nice to run on, the hell starts back into the course when you get off road.

oohhh...I am still haunted by the nightmare of choking on a green sports bean...maybe I will switch flavors...

I wouldn't worry too much about finding your way to the parking lot, the transition area, the starting line, the port-o-johns...This is Disney, they pretty much have the crowd control and getting large numbers of people where they need to be thing down.  Plus I am NOTORIOUS for getting lost, walking with in 3 feet of where I am supposed to be and not seeing it, or swimming an extra who knows how far on the swim course because I sight on the wrong buoy and I had NO problems with any of those things at this event.  There are like 3 million volunteers and they seem to be standing at every corner ready to point you in the right direction.

Man the heat has hit Florida.  In the last week the humidity has returned.  I did a 52 mile ride yesterday on the course and cramped really bad from sweating so bad. The wind was blowing out of the south pretty hard. I was not proactive with taking salt tablets and I am a very heavy sweater.  The weather shows temps and humidity coming down at end of week.  The last few days the weather here has send the temps and humidity have been at late June levels.  It feels like that.  If the wind is blowing out of the south at a good clip it will mean the last 8 - 9 miles of the bike will be against the wind.  Yesterday was the worst wind I have had on the course and I have ridden it several times.  I was glad I had the issues with the cramps in that it made me realize the importance of being proactive with the salt tablets.  I had no issues with cramping since Oct 2009 due to the winter temps here in Florida.  Not the case now!Cool

I decided to try InfinitNutrition from this website.  I set up my formula based off the questions they ask.  I talked with a friend who is using it and says it has been working for him.  I am not sure I will use the formula on the day of the race which I don't think would be smart not testing how my system handles it even though I have never had any stomach issues from anything I have eaten or drank while running and riding.  Hope the way it is customized for you that it helps with my heavy sweathing and cramps in my quads and hamstrings.
