pdbman - 2010-05-13 5:15 PM Just got back from my lunchtime swim. I like swimming in the early afternoon. Had to pool to myself. My swim goal is now 50%. I need to focus on some of my other goals and bring them up. I'm way behind on my running but should be able to catch up if I stay focused.

I just finished dinner - too funny!

Funny how those time zone thingies affect us. One person is eating lunch when another is eating dinner. There is a really big time zone thing between me and my relatives in New Zealand. I can never talk to them today, its always tomorrow.

Took a big bite out of my bike total for the month.

Going to get up early in the morning and jump in the ocean before work.

billsorg - 2010-05-13 4:21 PM Finally have some movement in my neck and the soreness is going away.  Those muscle relaxers are unbelievable!  Hopefully, I'll be close to 100% tomorrow and can get back to some training.  What a pain in the neck (ha ha)!

Did they ever say what caused it?

Could be a pinched nerve.  It's one of those things that starts to hurt a little, then I start trying to compensate by moving my head as little as possible and that causes muscles to spasm.  It happens once every year or so and usually goes away in a day or two.  This is the worst it's gotten since I can remember.  But I'm probably around 80% today.

As mentioned above, the neck is about 80%.  I may go over to the gym and do a little recumbent bike workout, which would leave my neck/shoulders completely out of the equation.  I hope it's healed enough to do a long bike ride on Sunday.  My wife is taking our 7yo daughter camping for girl scouts, so I'm a single dad for most of the weekend.

Oh that I lived that close to the ocean that we could do that. We love the ocean. We used to take a vacation and spend time at the beach every year but haven't had the time to do that the last couple of years with everything that has been going on. All my vacation time will be gone by the middle of June so we won't get one in this year either. Hopefully next summer.

Its nice to have a quiet weekend to yourself like that every once in a while.

Got another late night run in last night while waiting for my wife and son to get home. Nice relaxing run.
I didn't get to bed until almost 2 so no morning workout. I'm really trying to be better about getting up and getting in some kind of a workout before heading out but its really hard to get the teenager off to bed which makes us late getting to bed and then I can't get up early enough. I was going to bring my bike for a lunch time ride but forgot it in the rush to get to work this morning.
We have stuff going on tonight at the church so I'm not sure what I will be able to squeeze in. Maybe my son and I can ride our bikes to the church. Have to play it by ear and see how things go.

So THAT'S what the gym looks like!  Sheesh!  It's only been 3 days since I've been to the Y, but it feels like weeks.  I got in a 45 min recumbent bike workout.  Nice, easy pace... no neck movement whatsoever.  Neck continues to feel better.  Maybe a long run on Sunday.

wgraves7582 - 2010-05-14 10:10 AM I have been toying with an idea - let me know if you think there would be any interest!

I am riding 1700 miles from June 4th - July 3rd.

I was thinking to see if there would be any teams of say 6 that would like to try and challenge that mileage and if they do I would put $20 a team towards the LAF or another Cancer Research and if they don't the team puts in $20 to the same foundation.

What do you think????

I think it sounds like a great challenge. The "Beat Bill" challenge. First team to hit 1700 miles wins. It would be fun and is for a good cause. I think $20 per person would be reasonable and is a little more motivation for me to do the riding (since there is only one of you, you would only be on the line for $20). Collecting from the losers could be an issue.

I don't think I would be able to participate though. I head to Mexico on the 4th for ten days, then have a relay race three days later. I wouldn't be able to really do any riding for the first half of the challenge, I guess its pretty easy to share an opinion when I wouldn't be able to back it up by participating.

Just doing some calculations on this. That would be about 285 miles per person. That would be a lot of miles for me. It really would be challenge.

So after bragging yesterday about the wonderful weather we have on the way, it started raining this afternoon. And to think that I looked at my coat this morning and thought "What the heck did I bring this for." Well, now I know.

Swim was short, but better than nothing. We were kind of pressed for time. We did two in-and-out shore starts. Good practice for porpoising, sighting, and using landmarks. I'm getting better, but still kind of swim like I'm drunk in the open water.

I'm planning on getting in the ocean again Sunday morning after work.

wooo hooo...my A race (Oly) is finally here.  Making my last minute preps and mentally going through the race in my head.

Weather should be good.  If it's anything like today...it means I better move fast...because the winds were dead calm in the morning...but steadily picked up...and of course...the second half of the bike course is into the prevailing winds.

This is a much bigger race than my first two sprints.  There are a bunch of Japanese tourists that have come down to do this race, as well as from some other countries.  I think 8 total countries are being represented.  Almost 1500 total athletes.  Most doing the sprint and Oly...but some just doing a 10k run, some doing a DU, and some just doing the 1500m swim.  I'm in the first wave (6am)...Olympic M34 and under, followed by 6 other waves.  The sprint waves start at 7:30am.  The DU's, 10k runners, and swimmers are somewhere in between.

Luckily I went to the first race briefing session and got a parking pass.  There is only limited parking at the race site, so it's just one less thing to worry about on race morning.  I can get there early, set up transition, then relax in my car with my ipod.

The goal time is 2:50...which is part of my May goals...so wish me luck.

Just thought that I would check in with everyone.  So far the month has gone really well.  I put in just shy of 30 miles of running last week and I'm on my way to my biggest run month ever.  I'm sitting at 98 of 170 km for the month.

My long term plan is to slowly build over the next 18 months to 50 - 55 miles a week and take a shot at a Boston Qualifying marathon October 2011.
